I’ve read studies regarding taking vitamins versus eating foods naturally high in vitamins, but what about foods where vitamins are added, such as Calcium, etc.?

That is called “fortification.” Do you actually believe the manufacturers care about your health? They add the cheapest thing they can to processed foods, primarily, to sell it as a marketing gimmick, nothing more. The “B” vitamins they add, for instance, is a petroleum distillate, derivative of COAL TAR. That’s not a vitamin, but a chemical activator. That junk damages your DNA of each of your cells.

Why would anyone want to fortify anything? Because they take out the good vitamins to preserve it so bugs and other living things won’t eat it. So, let’s see, they take out the nutrition and add the chemicals. Does that make sense? It is NOT for your benefit, but theirs and then they try to sell you on how good it is for you. Please!

The calcium they add is typically calcium carbonate. That is a rock and causes the body to develop cataracts, bone spurs, etc. NOT a good choice for any food.

My daughter is 6 years old now but since she started school the teachers have been telling me she has adhd. The first year I didn’t do anythign about it. The second year The teacher still pushed it so I brought her to a pediatrician who sjust basically medicated her right away without any testing. I took her off the drug because things were not improving after a few months. I recently went to see a different pediatrician and received the same diagnosis that she has adhd. I have been researching it as much as I can but I still have mixed feelings. I went today to see a naturopath to get her blood analyzed. I was amazed at what she told me, without me even telling her why I brought her there in the first place. She was able to tell me what was going on in her body and what would be affected by it. she recomended some supplements and a body cleanse. has anyone else tried this for their child and has it helped???

ADD is a relatively recent phenomena that has been getting progressively worse. Those critical of the conventional approach towards the condition believe the following may be true;
The condition is overdiagnosed by zealous psycologist (the reasons for this are debated, they include payments from drug companies)
A lot of previously normal behavior (ie. boys naturally don’t like to sit down at a desk all day long), is now considered a mental problem. Some people claim this is linked to the fact the new model of schooling wants to process students into mindless workers for an industrial system, hence previous indepenedent habits that prevent toiling in a factory all day long are not acceptable.
Environmental pollution causes it (ie. food additives were shown irrefutably by a UK government study to cause learning problems including ADD).
The nature of our current society creates it. For instance the rapidly changing stimuli on TV (one thing is only focused on for a few seconds before the next one is jumped to) causes a child’s attention span to be conditioned to be very short.

Regardless of the cause though, the biggest opposition towards the ritalin treatment is the fact that the stuff is an amphetamine (ie. think of methamphetamine aka crystal meth). A lot of the effects of ritalin mirror those of fairly bad drugs, and I know quite a few people raised on ritalin, who are for lack of a better term fucked up and disfunctional.
An old tactic (I never did it but I had friends that did) for doing well on important exams which were not primarily memory based and timed was to take cocaine or speed before the test. Ritalin has now become a much popular drug for this approach. The state of mind you go into can be useful occasionaly for situations like that, but forcing continually on the nervous system just messes it up, strains it, makes you completely dependent on the drugs, and puts you into a completely unnatural/abnormal state of mind.

I have heard of a few people who have seen naturopaths successfully (as another poster mentioned, naturopaths only count in states that accredit them, in other places the title is almost worthless) to treat it. I would advise looking into that before you tried anything else.

Ive got my whey and soy protein, I ve been using some creatine which is ok but not amazing. I heard that nitric oxide boosters are quite good for giving the extra pump. Any tips lads?

What is the optimal RAW meat for my dogs?

I currently feed my dogs half Nature’s Logic and half raw. ONLY half raw because raw is a bit pricey. The kibble I use has no synthesized vitamins/minerals added. It is all an all natural food. BUT I would like to go to a butcher and buy the family size package of meat to freeze and give to them with the kibble. I use Nature’s Variety frozen raw but am not above trying Primal or someone else’s. I just use the pre-made because it is sooo much easier than grinding/mixing myself.
O BTW they LOVE frozen turkey necks!!!

Optimal raw meat. I read somewhere that beef (buffalo, red meat) has the highest quality of digestible protein. Eggs are the perfect protein, but necks are great! My dog loves duck necks. We visit ethnic groceries for good deals.

I make vegicubes, keep a tub of flora in the fridge, or disguise her plants in chopped meat with eggs, powdered eggshells, liver, and fresh mackerel.

We keep a log of the proportions in our mixes, but we aren’t rigid. We feed a variety of whatever is in season, and on sale, balancing her nutritional requirements. We strive to supply her with meaty bones. We don’t grind. We try to keep her food simple. She usually gets a some sort of meat, bone in, some days her percentage of liver. Throughout the day, we treat with tablespoons of supplementary food.

We bring her chopped mixes with us when we leave town for a few days. It’s cheaper to assemble her food than to purchase from supply houses, unless we buy in bulk and pack a second freezer.

What’s a good vitamin supplement for my fish?

I feed my fish frozen brine shrimp all the time. I’d like to add vitamins to it so it’s more nutritious, but I don’t know which one to get? I don’t like buying fish food (flakes, pellets, etc) because of all the preservatives and additives. I feel like they’ll build up in the fish’s body (since it’s a main part of their diet) and give them cancer!

I used to say that the REAL wording behind the acronym for ADD was “Adults Don’t Discipline.” And with that as my mindset, my oldest child suffered miserably. I verbally beat him into submission — he didn’t REALLY submit, rather he just gave up. We’d been warned of the severe side effects of drugs being prescribed and opted to pull him from public schools and begin various regimens of diets. My wife and I are both well educated and thought ourselves up to the task of home school. He fell behind several grade levels and finally quit at the nineth grade. We put him on Strattera and put him to work. He went through jobs like most people go through underwear. At nineteen, he took himself off the medication and is currently enrolled in Job Corps.
Our youngest son, we held off slightly — not wanting to jump the gun. School went from being his favorite passtime to being something he absolutely hated and dreaded. So, with the mindset of not witholding medication for a diabetic, we had him tested and medicated. He’s in the fourth grade now. He’s in the advanced math program, working three grade levels above his fellow class mates and is reading four grade levels above the others. Still, he is teased mercilessly and there is a definite difference in his behavior when he misses his dosage. But clearly, it was and is the right thing for us to do. I now look back at My oldest son’s life, my life (and that of my father’s) and wonder how things might have been different. My IQ is just below genius and yet, I’ve always been the geek and underacheiver. My father never graduated from high school. Instead was given a certificate of attendence. He taught himself to read when he was in his forties.

Are there any natural ways to curb ADD and improve concentration?

I mean like specific foods to eat, or vitamins, as well as things to avoid. I have a terrible time concentrating, and I’m on enough meds right now as it is so I don’t want to go on adderal.

I’ll tell you a few things that I have found, from my own personal experience, that have helped improve my ADHD symptoms. I do not take any medication to help my concentration, I have always used natural strategies to deal with my attention problems.

One of the most important things for me is to eat as healthy and balanced of a diet as I can. Make sure you get the following every day:

– Fresh fruits and vegetables. Fruit in a can that is soaked in sugary syrup does not count. Chopping up fruit beforehand and keeping it in a Tupperware container makes it an easy snack. The vitamins and minerals in fresh produce help your brain and body work to their ultimate potential, which helps you stay focused.

– Protein! I personally will eat any source of protein, but some people prefer to stick to only the lean meats like chicken and turkey. They are also good for mood, and when your mood is good, your attention improves greatly. There are natural sources of omega 3’s like olive oil, flaxseeds, avocados, etc. so try to incorporate those into your diet. I cook everything in extra virgin olive oil instead of butter, that way I can fit some of those omega fatty acids into my diet without having to buy supplements. I fry eggs, meat, etc. in the oil and not only is it healthier than butter, but I honestly think it tastes better.

You can also take dietary supplements like fish or flaxseed oil (mentioned above) to help improve brain function, if you don’t think you’re getting enough omega fatty acids in your diet. Some people say that supplements like ginko help with memory and concentration, I’ve never personally tried them so I can’t say from experience. But I do know that the more balanced and varied my diet is, the sharper I feel mentally.

I’ve also found that sometimes you just have to listen to your brain and work with it, instead of against it. For example, when you’re studying, don’t try to sit down and study for 2 hours straight – your attention span simply can’t handle it, and you will only end up frying yourself out and getting anxious about it. Study for 30 minutes, then take a 15 minute break to get up and do something else. Then come back and study for 30 more minutes, then take another break. This is how I’ve always studied and it helps me retain information better because it works WITH my attention span, instead of against it.

You can use magnesium and zinc with orange juice?

My son is a magnesium and zinc. (Other than fish liver oil – omegas) in place. his meds ADHD magnesiun and I get mixed with zinc. oj to help them to hatch easier. What will the oj others react or not. And reduced or canceled, or no results. I know that some of the meds. EB is not ¶ oj … about blocking the absorption or not. Any suggestions here? In oj or keep. How can you add vitamins and nutrients to energy bars that i make myself? while still being able to sell them?

Hi, I make these energy/ candy bars for my self and have recently begun to sell to friends. I would like to add vitamins like supplements to my food but Im not sure how this would work. other than cutting up a vitamin to powder and puttting it in im lost. I also want to get my business licensed and im not sure if theywould allow me to do that so

How can i add vitamins and supplements to my bars while still being able to be licensed??

some people are on medications that interact with such nonsense..
If you simply eat a well balanced meals your vitamin needs are fulfilled and such supplements are expensive poo/ pea.
or get stored as FAT…

Would there be any harmful effects in taking a one-a-day vitamin supplement twice in a 24-hour period?

I am wondering if taking a Centrum One-a-day multivitamin twice a day for added vitamins would be harmful, or just more beneficial. The bottle says it contains 100% of the daily values of 11 different vitamins and minerals, but would there be harm in getting 200% of the daily recommended amount of some of these? Thank you.

My 7 yr old son has just been diagnosed with ADD. Other than medication, what are my options?

What can be used to add enzymes to your diet?

I’ve heard that enzymes can help bad breath, digestion, heartburn, and a number of other things. What is a good source of enzymes? I’m looking for a food that can be added into my diet, or a natural organic vitamin or supplement. And what are all the health benifits of drinking vinager daily?
Our bodies produce enzymes naturally, but they aid in digestion and the other things that I posted in my question. Also drinking Vinager burns fat in the body. We get ulcers from other things we eat. I thought this was the Alternative Medicine Board!

The source of enzymes that you are looking for to aid digestion and hearburn is pineapple and papayas. You can buy papaya enzymes at Wal-mart. They are very inexpensive and taste delicous. I use them all the time for heartburn. If I’m out I eat pineapple or drink pineapple juice. You can also eat fresh papaya. Papaya contains the enzyme papain which is beneficial in many ways. Choosing the Proper Supplements: Where Do I Begin?

If you are starting to enhance your diet with additional vitamins, herbs, minerals or other supplements, you are probably wondering whether you are hitting all the key areas. Or perhaps you have not started to supplement your diet yet, and you aren’t quite sure where to begin. There is a huge body of information out there, and it can be overwhelming. Take a look at this simple supplement overview and find out how to get started.

You should probably begin by examining your individual dietary deficiencies.

For example, if you are a strict “meat and potatoes” eater, you may not be getting enough nutrients from fresh vegetables or fruits. In this case, you would likely want to supplement your diet with a multi-vitamin and perhaps even some additional vitamin C.

If you are a vegetarian, and consume no meat whatsoever, you may want to supplement with a B-complex as well as Zinc and other minerals, amino acids, and vitamins found predominately in beef and other meat sources.

If you find yourself occasionally eating chicken, but do not enjoy the taste of fish, you could supplement with fish oils, which are great for your cardiovascular health, your brain, and even your skin and temperament.

If after a few weeks you do not really notice a difference in your health, stamina, energy, or fatigue levels, you should reevaluate what you are taking. You may need to increase the dosage, try a new regimen, or add additional supplements to what you are already taking. If after a few weeks you still do notice a marked improvement — say, to your energy levels — you may still want to add supplements so that other areas of your body function at a higher level.

For instance, perhaps your fatigue levels decrease after adding a B-complex to your diet. That is wonderful!
