Big discrepancy between iq points??What’s wrong with me?

My performance iq is 147 and my verbal iq is 112. That is an 35 difference. I am 15 years old. I’m interested in knowing why the discrepancy is so much. My psychologist said something about maybe ADD and a low self esteem but i don’t understand why that could have such an impact on my verbal iq.

So just to be clear my question is why the big dicrepancy and what might cause this?

I apologise for my english it’s not my first language.

These discrepancies can and, as you’ve experienced, do happen. I assume you took the WISC evaluation since this test evaluates performance and verbal indices.

The discrepancy could arise for different issues. ADD is a possibility, so is ADHD, or you are process visual information much better than verbal information. Here’s a list of characteristics found in visual learners.

• Learns through seeing
• Reader/observer
• Scans everything; wants to see things, enjoys visual stimulation
• Enjoys maps, pictures, diagrams, and color
• Needs to see the teacher’s body language/facial expression to fully comprehend
• Often closes their eyes to visualize or remember something
• Daydreams; a word, sound, or smell causes recall and mental wandering
• Usually takes detailed notes to absorb the information
• May think in pictures and learn best from visual displays such as diagrams, illustrated
textbooks, overhead transparencies, PowerPoint presentations, videos, and handouts
• Tends to prefer sitting at the front of the classroom to avoid visual obstructions
• Is usually neat and clean
• Finds something to watch if they are bored
• Benefits from illustrations and presentations that use color
• Is attracted to written or spoken language rich in imagery
• Finds passive surroundings ideal
• Have a clear view of your teachers when they are speaking so you can see their body
language and facial expression
• Use color to highlight important points in the text
• Take detailed notes and utilize handouts
• Use visual materials such as pictures, charts, maps, and graphs
• Use multi-media such as computers or videos
• Study in a quiet place away from verbal disturbances
• Visualize information as a picture to aid memorization and learning
• Make charts, graphs, and tables in your notes
• Participate actively in class—this will keep you involved and alert
• When memorizing material, write it over and over
• Keep pencil and paper handy so you can write down good ideas

adhd snap test

My daughter is not doing her Would spank her it is a good idea?

She is a very clever girl. (Tested by Talent. – Her father as well), but in A few years ago, her academic performance has declined. She did not make honor roll. Where she was a natural talent alone is not enough anymore with these courses more difficult. She never studied her teacher. Said that she stared at the floor of the dream like you. She forgot that every time, even so I give her. She forgets what she is wearing five minutes ago. She came home after school. And staring into space. Talking with her is like talking to brick walls. Get her attention is not the exercise in She seemed stuck in a daze If I use physical force to snap her out of it that will help or not. Her father was diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or add or whatever. But I do not believe in that. Thank you for your reply.

If she was my daughter, I will use my knees, her ove, drop her pants and spank her bare bottom until it was cherry red. I will let you know. WLL will cause the same effect every time you miss home. You need to get her back on track and working on her potential.

Bipolar and ADHD?

I asked a similar question. But there are two answers. I love my boyfriend with all my heart and I tried to help him and be there for him. He is Bi – polar and ADHD, and sometimes very bumpy. Like today, my friend asked him how he did and he flipped out and said you know what,. F ** K you and your friends. [He does not like her.] I just do not know what to do anymore. It's always like everything is my fault and I always * B tching at him .. and I do not, I just I want to help him. He has two bestfriends who like to go to a screen name and the rules of his head with the girl too. Fusterating it really because he did not stop them, then I will be yelling at me to get the young people of her I think it's kind. Difficult to trust him when that happened with I do not know what to do anymore. I do not want to leave him. But it would be a good idea. He treats me like a princess if I ask him a question. He flips. What I should do.

Asked him if he loves you, and if he wants to stay with you. .. And if they say no, then let him if he said. IDK .. then tell him to do well, while the U. IM your mind is lost or IDK, if he says yes, then talk to him about things about you and if he does not understand. … Taking a bath, I would guess that he is the best. What to do .. or he will get counseling. IM IDK .. but yah proffessional.

Fighting Adhd – Lots Of Treatment Options To Help Your Child

There are now several ways of fighting ADHD. The only problem is that not everybody is in agreement about them! This is particularly true about fringe treatments such as equine therapy, biofeedback, meditation, yoga and dietary supplements.

As regards mainstream treatments in curing ADHD, there is more or less general agreement. In recent years, more and more paediatricians are now recommending some sort of behavior therapy combined with some sort of medication as the best way forward. That is great progress.

Just a few years ago, the most popular way of fighting ADHD was to just use medication with psychostimulants alone and this has been very controversial. At least nowadays, it is regarded as just one tool in the treatment of ADHD and that is definitely a step in the right direction.

There is also some other good news on fighting ADHD on the diagnostic front although we will have to wait another few years for the DSM Manual, V edition to be published. That should offer new guidelines and they may just split the condition into two sub types such as AD, attention deficit and HD, hyperactivity disorder.

Latest research is also pointing to the fact that the initial age of diagnosis should be raised to 7, as lots of children start displaying ADHD symptoms around then. Certainly, three or four year olds are too young to be labelled with such a challenge at such a tender age.

Why? First because the effects of these amphetamine drugs on young child’s brain is extremely controversial and there are concerns voiced by the FDA, the CDC and other medical authorities.

It is no accident that these drugs are still classed as Class II drugs with all the risks of addiction that could bring. In addition there are health risks as outlined on the FDA site. Last but not least, there are worries about the long term effects which has never been really addressed in fighting ADHD.

Fortunately, thanks to the Internet, parents are becoming much more savvy and are beginning to be more aware of the problems and challenges faced by their ADHD children.

Certainly homeopathic remedies for ADHD have gained enormous respect compared to about twenty years ago. This is because they have been shown in many trials to be equally as effective as the ADHD conventional psychostimulants. The fact that homeopathy treats the whole person and stimulates a balance between the mind and body, helps ADHD children to calm down, reduce hyperactivity and increase concentration span.

Now that you know there are many different ways of curing ADHD, why not click through and discover more about a very gentle treatment which is also extremely effective.

Using Behavioral Therapy For The Relief Of Adhd

Children who suffer from ADHD often experience difficulties at home or in school. What can be seen as unruly behavior in young children can become overwhelming in children as they reach their teens. They may perform badly in their academic work, become involved in fights or struggle to make friends. Some end up being moved from one school to another due to disruptive behavior. So it’s important to try and find relief of ADHD while children are young.

Although studies have been conducted, there are is yet no defined cause of ADHD, although scientists are moving away from environmental factors and are concentrating on looking at biological causes. However, there are some environmental treatments that can provide real improvements in ADHD behavior.

Behavior Therapy
The premise of Behavior therapy is that it is based on simple concepts about what leads people to behave in socially acceptable ways. This works for ADHD by looking at the relationship between parent and child. Most children want to please their parents and make them feel proud as it also boosts the child’s feeling of self-worth. Also, most children have realized that if they behave in the correct or appropriate manner they can gain rewards for doing so. By contrast misbehavior generally brings with it negative consequences.

In order for your child to get the most out of behavior therapy they ideally need to be involved from the start. So sit down with them and go through what behaviors are expected from them in various situations. Be very clear in your descriptions so there is no ambiguity. Discuss all the possible outcomes and agree on the rewards and also the punishments. By doing this exercise your child will be clear on what you expect of them and also what they stand to gain or lose.

Some parents may wonder why they are providing rewards for behavior that should done anyway and fear that they are bribing their children. This isn’t the case. You are providing your child the motivation they need in order to improve their behavior.

This approach will take time and perseverance on both the parents and child’s behalf. However, stick with it and you should see some improvements.

If you would like to learn more about natural solutions to help ADHD, including why diet has such a big impact, sign up for the free newsletter below.

Using behavioral therapy in conjunction with a number of the other treatment options like medication, natural remedies, diet and neurofeedback can help provide relief of ADHD behaviors. Adhd Losing Things

adhd losing things

adhd losing things

What are the Criteria for an Adhd Test?

There is no single ADHD test to determine if a person has ADHD. A specialist makes the diagnosis by comparing a person’s behavior pattern against a set of criteria established by the American Psychiatric Association. These criteria for an attention deficit disorder test are as follows:

(1) The person has either six inattention symptoms or six hyperactivity and impulsiveness

symptoms.

* Does not pay close attention to details or makes careless mistakes.

* Has trouble keeping attention on activities.

* Does not seem to listen when spoken to.

* Does not follow through on instructions and fails to finish tasks.

* Has difficulty organizing tasks and activities.

* Avoids, dislikes, or is reluctant to do tasks requiring sustained mental effort.

* Loses things necessary to do tasks or activities.

* Is easily distracted.

* Is forgetful in daily activities.

Symptoms of hyperactivity and impulsiveness for the ADHD test include:

* Fidgets with hands or feet or squirms in his or her seat.

* Leaves his or her seat at times when remaining seated is necessary.

* Feels restless or, as a child, inappropriately runs about or climbs excessively.

* Has difficulty taking part in leisure activities or quiet play.

* Is “on the go” or acts as if driven.

* Talks excessively.

* Blurts out answers before questions have been completed.

* Has difficulty awaiting his or her turn.

* Interrupts conversations or intrudes on others activities.

(2) Symptoms continue for at least six months and are more frequent and severe than

normal.

(3) Symptoms cause significant damage to social, academic, or work function.

(4) Some damage to function occurs in at least two settings, such as home, work, or

school.

(5) Some damaging symptoms occur before the age seven.

(6) The symptoms are not due to another disorder.

A diagnosis of the ADHD test should be made by a team of specialists who are experts in the disorder, and it is wise to get a second opinion if your child is diagnosed as having ADHD. Have your child take another attention deficit disorder test. Be careful about jumping to prescription medications. While these medications are certainly helpful, a recent study released in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) discussed safety concerns and the rising number of two-to-four-year-old children who are now on the prescription medications.

After the ADHD test and doctor have determined your child has ADHD, a much better approach would be to consider alternative therapies, which would include dietary control, behavioral therapy, and herbal and homeopathic remedies.

As a parent of a child and a step-parent of a child diagnosed with ADHD, I can personally tell you that alternative methods are the way to go. Both of my boys were given Ritalin to take, but I just could not do it after reading about the side effects. Alternative treatment was every bit as effective prescriptions, but without the side effects.

Do I have ADHD?????????????????????????

I am 13 and I keep wondering whether I have ADHD since I am always restless and sometimes get told something and I don’t listen. I am one of the top students in my class I am going into gifted but still i have problems focusing I often hurt myself running down the stairs and I always have this energy that I can’t use up. i often lose things because I forget they were even there and I talk excessively could I have ADHD? My doctor had never said anything was wrong with me mentally but is it possible that I could have ADHD?

No it’s normal for 13 year olds to be hyper active and not paying attention. Anything can make someone hyper, sugar, sodas, serotonin in your brain from exercising (something adults don’t do anymore).

Don’t listen to psychiatrist, they will tell you that you have ADHD. Heck even if you don’t have a problem they will make one for you and give you drugs.
When i was 16 my psychiatrist told me i was depressed and suicidal because i liked breaking things in school and arguing with teachers. But look how i turned out now 😀

(by the way it’s not a joke even though it sounds like one, i have a PHD in bio-engineering that i’m never going to use)

Does watching porn to alleviate that I hate being single work?

I am 25 and never have been in a relationship and often get depressed when I see two couples walking together and displaying PDA. these days it makes me want to cry to. As a male I have also taken up skateboarding and also have been writing a lot of sexual fantasies in a diary of what I want to do with a girl that I saw for the day or a girl that I currently like.

It will probably just lead to further isolation and depression. Your time would be better spent preparing yourself for jobs that may be available through a job training program or community college. Self-absorption is a symptom of depression.

Do not underestimate the effects of exercise, proper diet (minimal sugar, avoid processed and refined foods; seek out whole grains, fruits and vegetables, seeds and nuts), avoiding drugs and alcohol, and adequate sleep (consistent each day and preferably more than 7 hours). All of these are essential for optimal physical and mental functioning, and ADHD is also treated in this way. And, meditation has been proven to reduce stress.

Speed Reading: Fact or Fiction?

Monday Rush

Julie is running late. It’s Monday morning and she can’t miss her class. There is no time for her to relax. She rushes to the subway and takes a seat. The other passengers are starring blankly straight ahead. Suddenly, Julie remembers that she was supposed to read the first chapter in her history book. She pulls out her book opens it to the first chapter. She flips a page. Then the second, third, — page twenty, — two hundred. Before she realizes it, the subway doors open and she has finished an entire book.

Fact or Fiction

Is this a dream or science fiction? Can someone actually read a book in 30 minutes? First, let’s ask where the idea of speed reading originated. A woman named Evelyn Wood turned in an 80 page paper to her college professor expecting him to read and return it the next day. To her surprise he read the entire paper in seconds and graded it immediately. She was stunned. How could anyone read so much so fast? Her professor was one of a select few people at the time. He was a natural speed reader. Evelyn Wood went on to study this phenomena and eventually founded a speed reading institute in Australia. That was 40 years ago. Since then, speed reading has become popular in many countries. However, the technique is almost unknown in the USA.

Air Force Research

A device called a tachistoscope was used during WWII to help fighter pilots identify aircraft silhouettes. The device flashed an image on a projection screen for a fraction of a second. Psychologists and educational specialists working on visual acuity created an experiment where the images were gradually reduced in size and the flash rate was increased. An average person could identify small images of different planes when flashed on the screen for only one-five-hundredth of a second.

The U.S. Air Force modified the system by changing the images to single words. Then up to four words flashed simultaneously on the screen at rates of one five-hundredth of a second. The participants were able to recognize and understand the words. This experiment demonstrated that, with some practice, words can be recognized and understood at much higher speeds than normal reading rates.

Misconceptions

Unfortunately, the term speed reading received a black eye in the 1990’s when a number of unscrupulous companies made outrageous claims about their speed reading products. These were often combined with useless memory enhancement packages and sold by snake oil salesmen that exaggerated the benefits of their systems. Many of the systems promoted completely different methods which often conflicted with each other. These systems relied on pseudo-science claims that were so far out that they make crystal healing look like cutting edge technology. Some unblinkingly claimed the subconscious could extract unnoticed content from the printed page. Confusion and frustration resulted when people tried to follow their bad advice. In spite of these obstacles, speed reading is making a comeback. Today we have a better understanding of how speed reading works in the brain. New and improved teaching techniques and the ability to use computers for training have made speed reading a hot topic again.

Before we see what speed reading is, let’s look at what speed reading is not. Speed reading is not skimming. Skimming is an inaccurate reading method. Imagine trying to skim the instructions for your new hair-dryer and thinking it said ‘use in shower’ when it actually said ‘do not use in shower’. Missing that all important word, not, changes the entire meaning. Skimming simply does not work. Speed reading is not skimming. A speed reader actually reads every word.

Speed reading is not pushing harder. Anyone can push harder to read faster but this only works for a few sentences before falling back to regular speed. Speed reading is a technique that allows you to read an entire magazine or book at speeds two to ten times faster than average reading speed.

Some speed reading systems go to great lengths to teach hand motion techniques or eye movement techniques. Research conducted during the development of Speed Reader-X™ has not shown these techniques to work in themselves. Some people find hand motions distracting while others use hand motions to stay focused. The best rule about hand motion is to use it if it helps and forget it otherwise. There is no magic hand motion that will increase your reading speed. Books can spend chapters explaining eye movement patterns. You move your eyes all day every day. It is not something that requires practice. Eye motions will come naturally.

Speed Readers

Speed reading has been part of big business and government for years. It has been taught to executives of many major companies such as IBM, Microsoft, Xerox, and Hewlett Packard. Even presidents have been speed readers including John F. Kennedy, Richard Nixon, and Jimmy Carter. President Carter took speed reading lessons while at the white house and he read two books per week even with his Presidential duties.

Reading Speeds

According to SpeedReaderX.com, the average person reads around 250 words per minute. This is the speed of the little voice in your head that pronounces words as you read. Speed readers can read from 600 to 1500 words per minute or faster.

It is not uncommon for people to immediately double their reading speed when first learning speed reading techniques. Children eight years and older are the best candidates to learn speed reading. At this age they have a fairly large vocabulary and are familiar with reading. Speed reading becomes more difficult for adults. Just like learning a foreign language comes easy to children, so does speed reading. Adults have been reading the old fashioned way much longer so it takes longer to learn a new reading technique. Adults can still benefit from speed reading. They simply have to put a little more effort into it.

Speed reading can provide many benefits. It makes children want to read more. Speed reading fills a child’s short attention span by fully immersing them in the material. They actually enjoy reading. This makes children much more likely to read for pleasure. Many studies have shown that children who read perform better in school and to have fewer behavioral problems.

ADD/ADHD/Dyslexia

Children with ADD, ADHD, and Dyslexia have trouble reading because these conditions make them right brain dominant. Most people are left brain dominant when it comes to reading. Speed reading uses the visual centers of the right side of the brain. This makes learning speed reading easier for these otherwise disadvantaged children.

George Stancliffe, founder of The American Speed Reading Project, has reported success in teaching speed reading to students that have ADD, ADHD, and Dyslexia.

Mr. Stancliffe said, “…many people with ADD or Dyslexia find speed reading easier than normal reading. Their brains take to the new, visual intake of words much more easily.” He continued to say, “If you have a child who may have either ADD or Dyslexia, and you want him/her to be a better reader, one of the best things that you could do is to teach him/her to speed read.”

The Secret

Now that we know speed reading reaches all the way to the Whitehouse, how does it work? The whole concept is actually quite simple. We learn to read in the first grade. By the second grade we recognize whole words. We learn more words and some grammar but that is the end of the teaching process. From this point on, we are effectively reading at a first or second grade level for the rest of our lives.

The human brain can take in information much faster than this. When you read this page, you are likely seeing one or two words at a time. But when you look at a friends face you do not look at individual features to determine who you are looking at. You see their entire face and you immediately recognize them. The brain processes images much faster than it can process words. When you watch a movie, you take in massive amounts of visual information. When a car zooms by on the big screen, do you say to yourself ‘C-A-R, car’? Of course not. You see it and you know what it is. You do not have to sound it out or hear it in your head to know what you are seeing. But, when you see the word ‘car’, the little voice in your head says ‘C-A-R, car’. This sub-vocalization slows reading to a snails pace. To speed read, you must learn to see words as images. You must re-learn to process what you read with the right side of your brain instead of the left side.

Speed reading is a technique that allows you to take in the printed word just like you take in images while watching a movie. You learn to change how you view words so they are seen as images by the right side of the brain instead of using the voice in your head with the left side. This completely changes how your brain processes information.

Bored Brains

How many times have you read a page and by the end realized you had no idea what you just read? This happens because the brain becomes bored with the slow reading pace and tunes out that little voice. Your brain wants to go faster than the voice in your head can read. This sub-vocalization is creating a reading speed limit.

Simply silencing this voice can dramatically increase reading speed. You are switching the reading responsibility from the left side of your brain to the right side. You must switch from using the reading and cognition centers to visual centers of the brain

Sub-vocalization is still important in the understanding of complex concepts but, it is not necessary and is undesirable for most of what we read. E-mail, magazine articles, and news articles simply do not require deep comprehension to understand. Subjects like mathematics, philosophy and complex concepts are not suited to speed reading techniques. Speed reading techniques are still useful in covering reviews and summaries of these topics.

Novels are read for enjoyment and are usually read in real time as if the events are happening in the reader’s head. The voice in your head becomes the narrator. Zooming through lengthy descriptions that would otherwise cause the story to drag makes the overall novel reading experience more enjoyable. The reader can then return to normal reading speeds for the interesting parts of the novel.

Speed reading is always a useful tool for any type of reading. It is used when appropriate and gives way to normal reading when deeper understanding is needed.

Skeptics

There are some people that are still anti-speed-reading. It is important to be wary of skeptics who claim they have tried some or all speed reading programs and have failed. These people often make claims without going into details or citing methods they have tried. They do not reveal how long they tried the programs or if they followed the recommended practice sessions seriously. They frequently misapply speed reading techniques then claim failure without mentioning the fact they are reading the book upside down. They claim they cannot remember what they read at 2,500 words per minute but, forget to mention they have not developed the skill to read at that speed. They try to use maximum speed techniques on complex material which is contrary to the teachings of modern speed reading methods. Most of these people will be extremely negative towards speed reading and try to convince others it is a fake or a scam. These people often refer to the older snake oil systems from the 90’s which provide a rich source for skeptics.

Comprehension rates determine how much we understand of what we read. It is easy to have 100% comprehension of one sentence. Longer articles or books may have unfamiliar words or concepts. This results in less than full comprehension by any reading method.

Comprehension levels of under 50%* are generally cited by skeptics as a failure in speed reading yet, this level is not uncommon in normal reading tests of high school and junior high children when reading adult level materials. Low comprehension for extremely high reading speeds is often cited as a reason for its failure but, this assertion ignores how modern speed reading works. Reading speed varies depending on the material. Maximum reading speed is not used constantly. This is no different than normal reading. You read faster when you need less comprehension and slower when you need more understanding.

Speed reading is a structured process which calls for some materials, such as text books, to be read at high speed, then a lower speed, and then reviewed at a highest possible speed. A 50% comprehension rate when reading 2500 words per minute is excellent. At this reading rate the reader can read an entire book twice in less time than they could read one chapter at a normal rate. On the second reading the comprehension rate can increase to 75% or 90%. A rate of 80% comprehension is common at normal reading speeds. With practice, comprehension at lower speeds, 600 to 1000 words per minute, can meet or exceed regular comprehension rates.

Skeptics often target systems that claim 10,000 words per minute. Such outrageous numbers do make easy targets. Those making 10,000 word per minute claims often fail to mention that comprehension at that speed is 0% to 5%, which is no different than skimming. This rate may be perfectly acceptable if you are looking for some specific information in a long report but, not if you want to remember what you are reading. Rates of 600 to 1500 words per minute are more common and provide the best speed/comprehension balance.

Retention is important. There would be no point in speed reading if you could not remember what you read. This is where many of the products from the snake oil salesmen fell short. People learned basic speed reading techniques but could not remember what they read. Retention and comprehension are actually improved by speed reading but, only after the reader becomes comfortable with speed reading. It takes practice to reach this level. You can easily recall dialog free action sequences of a movie after the movie is over. This information was taken in visually and very rapidly. Your brain is already trained to take in the information from a movie. After the brain is re-trained to take in written words visually, it actually becomes easier to recall and understand what is being read.

Training Products

New research has updated speed reading techniques since Evelyn Wood’s discovery of speed reading in the 1950’s. Computers now make it easier to learn and practice speed reading. The original books or audio programs on speed reading required you to time yourself while reading passages, write down the results, and repeat this process many times. Research during the development of the Speed Reader-X speed reading software showed that most people skipped over these sections which negated the effectiveness of these early speed reading books. With computer training software, the computer takes care of the timing and keeps track of your progress. The computer training programs show charts and statistics of your reading speed so you can see your progress. They also increase the difficulty as you progress and your skills improve. These new techniques and improvements in teaching methods make learning speed reading much easier and more reliable. There are new products that use the latest techniques such as Speed Reader-X speedreaderx.com and Eye-Q eyeq.tv which are among the leaders in the field of computer training software.

Mastering the Skill

Speed reading is a skill. It is a skill that takes practice. It is also a skill that can make a profound difference in someone’s life. Very few people are natural speed readers but, almost anyone can learn the skills needed. Speed reading may not be for everyone, just as learning a foreign language is not for everyone. Today there are inexpensive software programs that make it easy and fun to practice speed reading. Speed reading results vary from person to person and can depend on many factors, not the least of which is the amount of effort put into it. Children stand to benefit the most, especially those with certain learning disabilities. Adults willing to learn a new skill can also benefit. Speed reading is more than simply reading fast. When proper techniques are ignored or remain unpracticed, the results can be disappointing. When the techniques of modern speed reading are applied and used correctly, the results can be astonishing.

All You Need to Know About Boarding Schools for Children with ADHD

Although underachievement in school is a familiar case scenario for children with ADHD, on most cases these academic failures aren’t totally reflective of what these children can be capable of. The most frustrating part to parents would be the speculation – what if these children worked harder or behaved better in class?

The underlying problem of ADHD sufferers is the inability to maintain attention and the resistance to distraction. These biologically-based inabilities alone prevent them from meeting a school setting’s intrinsic demand for self-regulation and self-direction, which are : staying put quietly in their seats, listening attentively when the teacher speaks, raising hands before talking, asking permission first if they need to go out, doing seatwork, exams, projects and other school work on time.

Boarding schools especially for children with ADHD can offer these children direction and structure, which is basically absent in most academic institutions.

General Set Up

Academics

Most ADHD boarding schools cater to younger children, usually from ages 3 to 12 years, where the child’s formation and development is the most critical. Learning programs mostly delve on teaching children how to appropriately respond to stimuli which help learning process. Most schools have well built online sites where you can peruse what they have to offer for your child. An example is the New Leaf Academy in North Carolina, a private boarding school exclusive for girls ages 10 to 14. On the site, you can check out daily activities, the academic programs as well as make virtual tours of the campus.

Social Training Programs and Activities

Most ADHD schools have specialized daily programs that will help develop a better focus and management in future life. These programs teach strategies on how to improve communication while discouraging unwanted behavior. Most of these programs are built into each day’s activities. For instance, during mealtimes children are taught proper table manners, how to enjoy food in a generally acceptable way, or how to start and engage in polite table conversations. As example, you can check a typical day schedule posted on Cedars Academy.

Certification

Until recently, many academic institutions were unwilling to evaluate a child with ADHD. However, with better understanding of the disorder, recent laws prohibit any academic institution to bypass the obligatory evaluation of a child suspected of having ADHD. Most states in the U.S have Parent Training and Information (PTI) centers as well as a Protection and Advocacy (P&A) agencies where you can check for more information.

adhd powerpoint for teachers

I think I have ADD-ADHD, but my parens don’t think I do. What should I do?

Im having the same exact problem. Your parents may think you have it…the just dont want you to. I can imagine being a parent and i know that i would love my kids and i wouldnt want anything to be wrong with their minds. So here is what you do…make a powerpoint or something about ADD and show it to them. Make them watch the whole thing because if they are good parents then they will listen to your problems. Once they are educated on it get a teacher you trust and tell him/her that you are having problems concentrating and stuff like that. Ask them to monitor you in class and if they see signs then they will write a report to your parents saying that you have problems concentrating. Then you give that to your parents and they should be 100% sure that somethings wrong with you and take you to a doctor. Now if you tell a teacher that you have problems concentrating then dont start pretending to be ADD. Be yourself in class and if they see a problem then its there. And if all this doesnt work then fake sick or something and get your parents to take you to the doctor and when you get there tell him you wanna get tested. You might be in trouble afterwards but just make sure your parents know that you dont want ADD, you only want medicine, and that you WILL NOT be put in a special ed class just because you have ADD. At the most, the school will just give you more time to finish tests and may put you in a room with no distractions for standerdized tests. Hope this works. Oh yeah im ADD and this was my process for getting tested. 😉

adhd grants for college

College financial aid and programs questions?

My cousin’s daughter will be going to college soon and will need to apply for a student loan/grant, etc. My cousin has a bank savings account with about $50,000 which he strictly set aside for his retirement only. He can’t use his retirement money in consideration for the grant/financial aid (read that the financial aid wants the parent/student to pay as much as possible). Is there anyway my cousin can keep his $50K and still apply for the financial aid?
Also, my niece’s nationality is part: Hawaiian (Pacific Islander), African-American, Hispanic (Puerto Rican); Asian/Filipina. What are the best scholarships to apply for with that heritage? And last, she was diagnosed with ADHD; will that increase her chances of getting a loan or is there another program that she can apply? Thanks to anyone who can help!

there are plenty of things they will qualify for. there are government grants/loans and then there are the private orgs/business’s that offer grants and scholarships.

tell them to avoid loans if at all possible.

try to aim for grants/scholarships more… they are not to be paid back. its confusing sometimes, but just keep applying.

every big (and small) company you see (manufacturer, orgs, corps and groups also) all have grants and scholarships they hand out like candy. Walmart, Kmart, Target, Coke, computer companies etc etc etc

heres a link with a HUGE amount of some available. some you will need to copy and paste into a new window. also, fastweb (take the time to fill it in) will search databases and get back to you with a list of scholarships you qualify for.

Also contact all mens, womens associations in your state, they almost always have grants & scholarships. What ever field you are going into, contact the orgs, associations etc for them; Also check with professional organizations related to your career interests, such as the American Bar Association or the American Medical Association. they also always have scholarships. Research and dig, call then write. Its all worth it.

OVER apply; it doesnt hurt to have too many, and the extra funds can help with housing.

ADHD Tests – Are They Accurate?

If you need to put your child through a battery of ADHD tests, then there are some important things that you should know. In this article, you’ll learn more about these tests and how conclusive they really are. You will also learn about some other important emotional issues that you need to be aware of.

First of all, many parents hold off on getting their children ADHD testing because they’re worried about their child being labeled with a diagnosis. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is so common today that it does not carry the stigma that it once did. There are web sites devoted to it and forums where parents can support each other and share stories about their children’s behavior and their success or lack of success with drugs. It doesn’t make sense to procrastinate when it comes to getting your child tested for ADHD because the sooner you know the results, the sooner you can help. The longer you wait, the further behind your child will be.

Although there are free ADHD tests on the internet, please don’t rely on them to diagnose your child. A diagnosis should be given by a qualified professional who specializes in this area and is able to make distinctions that other people don’t have the experience to make. Since one of the things the medical professional will be doing is comparing your child’s symptoms to those listed in the DSM-IV (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual which is used by clinicians to make diagnoses), make sure to record your child’s symptoms and their frequency. Frequency is particularly important because we all can show the symptoms of ADHD from time to time.

The symptoms that you should be list should include behaviors like hyperactivity, impulsiveness, tantrums, inappropriate outbursts, aggression, restlessness, difficulty listening, focusing and following instructions as well as the inability to stay on track. It’s a good idea to make a list of these and check them off every time you notice these behaviors within a specified period.

<strong>ADHD Tests</strong>
<ul>
<li>The Bender Gestalt Test reveals delays in learning by measuring a child’s visual acuity, neurological development and emotional responses.
<li>WRAT – this tests abilities in math, reading and spelling. It reveals if your child has learning disabilities.
<li>WISC-R – an intelligence test for kids under the age of sixteen that measures pattern recognition skills.
<li>TOVA – a 30 minute computer test that checks for inattention, impulsivity and response times. This test is used to measure how well a child’s medication is working (it is given before and after using medication) and how much it has improved the symptoms. Professionals believe this test is very accurate.
</ul>

Scores on ADHD testing will determine if your child has Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. They are considered to be both accurate and reliable. Once you know the outcome, you can make a treatment plan. ADHD is not the end of the world. There are many ways that caring parents can help their children lead normal, productive lives.

If you’ve been procrastinating with getting your child tested, you may be worried about giving your child drugs for ADHD. It’s important to know that drugs are not your only option. While some of the stimulating and non-stimulating drugs work well for some kids and relieve their symptoms quickly, they can make other kids much worse. Plus, their long list of side effects are troubling. Addiction is also a concern. The research shows that some 20% of teens who take ADHD drugs engage in recreational drug use later on in life.

Another option is natural remedies that have been designed specifically to suppress the symptoms, but also give the brain the nutrients it needs to function optimally. These remedies have no side effects and no drug interactions. They are also not addictive. Since there are a variety of supplements out there, make sure to choose one that has been FDA-approved, has a money back guarantee and contains clinically proven ingredients like Tuberculinum, Arsen Iod and Hyocyamus. An effective natural supplement is an excellent solution to ADHD tests that lead to a diagnosis for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

adhd in the classroom dvd

how can i convince my mom to get me home-schooled????????

im in high school and i’ve been having so many problems and i’ve been suffering from depression plus i think i used to have ADD or ADHD and it has affected me a lot and this is a long story and i really want to get home-schooled because i am sure i’ll graduate and i hate dealing with peer pressure at school and competitiveness..and a long long story…
can you also give me some good home-school companies, i already know about PennFoster..
im not in public school..

Ok there are a LOT of homeschooling companies out there and it really depends on what you are looking for. Do you want Christian or secular based curriculum? Do you want your studies to be online where you have an online instructor and some sort of diploma program, a DVD based classroom where you watch a teacher teach a full lesson on DVD and then do your work either in books or online, do you want a computer based curriculum that has the freedom to be customized by you or your mom and is not part of any outside grading or diploma program, or do you want a book based curriculum? How much can you afford to spend on curriculum each year? The costs for homeschooling curiculums depending on what you want, there is one free one that I know of depending on the state you live in, the rest range from $200 into the thousands.

As for how to talk to your mom, I would say come at it with a mature attitude. Sit down before hand and write a list of all the issues you have with public school and then next to each one write why you think homeschool will solve this problem.

Do either of you parents stay home during the day? If not this maybe a big part of the problem. Can they trust you to stay home all day by yourself and get the work done? You might have to make some sort of agreement where they allow you to try for a one month trial period and if you do not fullfill your end of things you will agree to go back to school. No attitude. No excuses.

Another thing you might do to show you willingness to show them is to say “I will finish this school year and do my best, but could we try homeschool over the summer, and if we both see that it could work then I could continue in the fall instead of going back to school. This would show you are willing to sacrifice some of your fun time to at least try.

You also need to look into the homeschool laws of your state and see what exactly is required. You can find that information here.

Good Luck.

My 12 y/o son have a weired learning problem=he cannot stay on task for more than literally 3 minutes?

I’ve done every evaluations there is to do when it comes to ADD or ADHD. I decided to homeschool him because I am so tired of him failing his classes and teachers calling me in to help him concentrate at school.

I am also running out of patience with him while teaching him at home, although I will NEVER give up on him. He always wants to go to the bathroom, or play with his watch, or even start talking about insignificant topics as a way to not read or solve a word problem.

Does anyone know how to categories this type of behavior?

I’m a homeschooling mom too.

I’d strongly first suggest that maybe you need to change the curriculum that you are using. It may be boring.

Seriously would you like to do what he is doing?

Find out how he learns best. Most of the time this is easy just by knowing your kids. Also it is usually the way one or both parents learn.

My kids are more visual learners. This means they learn better by SEEING. We use a lot of movies for homeschooling. A great way to learn history and other lessons.

Here is my website with a lot of links and info on how we learn. It hasn’t been updated in over a year but we still follow this pretty much the same.

http://www.ashley4jesus.com/ourhomeschool/main/homeschool.html

I can tell you without a doubt if my oldest who is also 12 was in school she’d be labeled ADD/ADHD and most likely other things too.

All kids learn in different ways. Right now your mind is stuck is in the normal natural public school way of learning.

I know a lot of parents when they first take their kids out public school give their kids a winding down period. They give their kids a month or maybe just 2-3 wks of free time. Just to get away from the stress that was in them.

Also at this time you can use it to figure out how your child learns.

http://www.homeschoolchristian.com/resources/whatishs/styles.php

http://homeworktips.about.com/od/homeworkhelp/a/learningstyle.htm

Also let your son have say in what kind of curriculum he follows. I let my daughter tell me if a book is boning. She won’t learn from a boring book.

If a workbook or something is boring after a few tries we toss it out and find another one.

If it doesn’t work for you then DON’T USE it.

The key to homeschooling is being able to work together and find out what works for your child. That is the freedom of homeschooling.

So I’d say if your son is walking away from his work all the time he is bored and doesn’t like it. Find something new.

Kids learn all kinds of ways! We often have what my kids call “FUN SCHOOL” where we will use a board game for math and logic skills. We’ll watch ROOTS together to learn history, character development and other things. We’ll listen a story CD for a lesson. We’ll make up a game to help learn facts instead of sitting there staring at a card.

School can be a joy and it doesn’t have be boring.

adhd office

Is it ok for a teacher to grab and carry a child?

My son is 4 weeks into kindergarten and he was suspended for two days yesterday for hitting and kicking a teacher. He is no angel and has adhd, but he does great with his regular teachers. This was out on the playground and not the first time he’s had a problem with this teacher. He had bopped another child on the playground and the teacher told him to come over to her. He knew he was in trouble and ran away from her. She chased him down, and when she grabbed him he started to hit and kick at her. She then picked him up and carried him into the school to the prinicipals office. Now I am not defending my child’s behavior, it is not acceptable for him to hit and kick at the teacher. But I’m wondering if this was provoked and if the teacher is allowed to grab and carry him. Also, I’ve noticed there are video cameras outside the school on the playground. Would I be out of line to ask to see the video tape?

I would pick up an out-of-control kindergartener. What do you think she should have done? Kept running after him until he tired out and had to stop? Dragged him? Left him there? Waited, hoping to have him comply?

I think if you asked to see the tape WITH YOUR SON so that he could see exactly what happened and have it talked over, that would be okay. To ask to see it because you are suspicious about a teacher who has actually done nothing wrong (and I’m confused as to why you would even think it’s wrong–she didn’t hit him, shove him, spank him or anything like that) is going too far.

adhd iphone app

Is it normal to have over 115bpm when anxious?

I’ve been anxious and stressed for days to weeks. My mum has this app thing on her iPhone that measures heart rate. Everybody else’s is between 60 – 90 and mine is always 115 or over. I’m 18.
I’m not sure if the app is accurate though.

It can be normal, but take your pulse yourself to be sure. Just place two fingers (not your thumb) on your wrist under the thumb and wait until you feel a beat, then count the number of beats in 60 seconds, , normal is between 60-100. Also, if you are on any medications such as those for ADHD they will increase your heart rate. But if you keep it up at 115 for a while (like more than a week) I’d go to your doc to get it checked out, just to be on the safe side.

Adhd Ekg

Do Adhd Drugs Cause Heart Attacks?

Do ADHD stimulant drugs such as Ritalin cause heart attacks? Yes, they can–in a small number of children. Children who have a pre-existing heart condition. Since 1999 thirty kids have died from sudden death attributed to stimulant drugs. And more have suffered heart-related problems. Again, all of these children had a pre-existing heart condition. The drugs didn’t cause the heart condition!

I’m not crazy about giving drugs to kids for ADHD. Lots of strategies help enormously with ADHD that don’t involve Ritalin. However, I don’t want to be part of the over-reaction and scare tactics running amok on the Web. Most children will not have a cardiovascular problem with ADHD stimulant drugs.

But the American Heart Association’s (AHA) doing the right thing! They’re recommending that every child have an electrocardiogram (EKG) before a prescription for a stimulant drug is written. Some people think this is extreme and way too expensive.

Total cost could be as high as $250 million–that’s assuming 250 million kids have EKGs at the cost of about $100 per child. Hmm. Am I missing something here? A hundred bucks per kid sure doesn’t sound all that expensive to me–given that it could save a child’s life! One of my grandchildren. Your child. A child in your classroom.

Keep in mind that a child can have a heart “problem” that your pediatrician isn’t aware of. Exactly the reason the AHA’s saying “get an ECG” first before taking an ADHD drug. And, yes, there’s a strong possibility of a false positive since children’s EKG’s are hard to read. So have a second EKG, a second opinion, more cardiac screening. But don’t skip this important evaluation.

In addition to an EKG, an ADHD cardiac checklist would also include –

  • Patient and family history with attention to fainting, palpitations, dizziness, difficulty with exercise
  • Physical exam including blood pressure and a check for abnormal heartbeats.
  • Consultation with a pediatric cardiologist if necessary.

For me, that a drug requires an ECG first is enough to consider non-drug alternatives for managing ADHD. Let drugs be the very last resort.

Get dopamine-increasing foods on the table, establish routines and schedules and boundaries. Eliminate foods with artificial color and flavoring. Cut back on refined carbs like candy, cookies, pie, cake, chips, and white bread. Increase protein. Look into programs for ADHD like Samonas or other sound therapy, Cog Med, neurofeedback, and Retrain the Brain. Turn off the TV. Get them moving everyday with games, sports, and vigorous exercise. Make sure they’re getting enough sleep.

Try a runner’s stretch: Hands against the wall, one leg forward with knee bent, other leg stretched out behind the body. Slowly lift your heel, coming up on your toes. Deep breath. Exhale while lowering your heel to the floor. Repeat a couple of times and switch sides. It’s the same as Calf Pump in Brain Gym. Do Calf Pump two or three times a day. Notice the change. Now that your kids are eating healthier, not watching so much TV, and getting plenty of exercise and sleep, they may not need an EKG or stimulant drugs. They may not have ADHD.
