adhd online assessment

Is it hard to distinguish Adult ADHD from other mental illnesses? Who can diagnose it? Where can I seek help?

And who can diagnose and prescribe medication for it?

Do I have to pay $250/hour to see a Psychiatrist for help??
I read that psychologist can’t help much.

I took many evaluations online and they say that there is a very high probability I have a “serious case” of Adult ADHD. I understand that no test can be used as a diagnostics, that is why I ask this question.

The specific laws vary by where you are living, but where I live the only person who can make a diagnosis of ADHD is a psychiatrist. A GP may be a good first point of call though, as they’re often well equipped to recognise common mental disorders (of course, some suck at it unfortunately).

And it is absolutely true that ADHD can be difficult to distinguish from other medical illnesses. Anxiety disorders are probably the biggest culprits, as they can cause both restlessness and hyperactivity, and well as greatly impair ones ability to concentrate. Depression also causes difficulty concentrating. Drug side effects and withdrawal, various non-psychiatric medical conditions… That’s pretty much why they require a psychiatrist to make the assessment.

How fast does Adderall wear off?

My psychiatrist just prescribed Adderall at a low dosage (10mg) to help with me with focus and severe lack of motivation in my everyday life. (For background info, I have had an adult ADD/ADHD evaluation, which was non-conclusive, and I’ve also seen a sleep specialist to address daytime fatigue due to frequent night awakenings, for which I take another medication.) I’ve been on Adderall for only a few days.

I was wondering among those who have taken it for short or long periods, about how long does the affect last? Does it last all day, or only 8 hours, or 6 hours, etc? I have noticed that it’s MUCH different from caffeine, from which I’ll feel adrenaline-pumping hyper for a few hours, then get fuzzy. Adderall seems to help me merely feel awake… which is an amazing feeling when you’re used to walking around in a fog most of the time.

There are two types. XR, and IR — Extended Release, and Instant Release. I will assume you are referring to the Instant Release.

In this case you would have an overall noticeable therapeutic effect for roughly 6 hours, though can be perceived to last longer in those with little to no tolerance, or high sensitivity to amphetamines.

No, instant release is not designed to last all day,.. though it is often prescribed to be used once daily despite this fact.

You will become tolerant to the effects in time,.. the longer you take it, like most other medications, the body will adapt and the duration may decrease. The perceived effectiveness is likely to lessen, though this might take quite some time. It has a high risk profile, meaning that abuse potential and/or dependency is likely over a long enough period of time. Though if it is a medication you need to function and improve your quality of life, then there is nothing wrong with this. It is just the nature of medicine in general, and these things have to be dealt with in ongoing consultations with your doctor over the ‘years’ so to speak.

Adderrall is nothing like Caffeine — It is like comparing apples and oranges to be honest.

Caffeine works as an Adenosine Antagonist (which plays a role in neural blood flow, CNS stimulation, etc) — Due to this mechanism of action the method in which is works and the results are substantially different than Adderall…

Adderall is an amphetamine — Which works on the dopamine and nor-epinephrine in the brain. These two chemicals produce a much stronger stimulant, cognitive clarity, and CNS both sympathetic and parasympathetic response.

In other words, the Adderall works in a completely different way … think of it like a key that goes into different locks in your brain to unlock the effects. These effects produce what you have already experienced subjectively, and usually creates a greater stimulation of the CNS.

You report that you don’t feel much more than the desired effects from this amphetamine — which is great. Although it has a greater “body-load” than caffeine.. even though caffeine feels , for you, more distressing on your body.

For example, if you were to take your heart rate after about 2-3 hours of taking the Adderall it would be elevated and your blood pressure would likely have increased to some degree. Though, if you are otherwise healthy.. the level of this increase is well within tolerable limits at proper, therapeutic, doses.

Keep in mind, none of this information is to discourage your use, or to cause concern. It is a useful medication.. and continue taking it as prescribed by your doctor — I am merely pointing out the differences in your perceived effect.

Just for completeness — The “Extended Release” is designed to last for about 12-14 hours. Though again this is subjective (In some people it will last for less, and other longer.) Also there is a definite ‘curve’ in Adderall’s potency after ingestion. It will slowly and steadily increase until it peaks after roughly 3 hours and then start tapering off the other way (in the IR).

So it should feel the most ‘energizing’ about halfway through the perceived effects.

Glad it is helping your situation,

I (seriously) fear for my mental health. Is this the sign of a slippery slope?

I have had a history of mild paranoia which I thought I beat. (Due to my past abuse) I don’t know if my ADHD or IBS are related but it’s additional information. Anyway, on the bus a man sitting in the front sit tells the bus driver to not let the people running for the bus on. He complies. This man keeps giving him instruction. And my mind thinks, this man is taking the passengers hostage. And I could not believe that I really got nervous as if it was true. I stopped myself in the middle and said this is ridiculous. I paid close attention and came to a more obvious conclusion. He was an MTA driver training a new worker. But for a good, 5 minutes, I honestly believed he was giving directions that were to be off the bus route and would be kidnapping us. Even as I type, it seems absurd.

I’m scared for a decline in my mental stability. Does it seem likely I could be heading that way?

You must have some preconceived notions about the world that makes you paranoid. I think some paranoia is OK as long as you balance it with reason and stay calm. I like to say paranoia is just a heightened state of awareness 😉

Under what field of science would eating disorders be in?

Contrary to common belief eating disorders are covered by a mutitued of sciences.

Eating disorders refer to a group of conditions characterized by abnormal eating habits that may involve either insufficient or excessive food intake to the detriment of an individual’s physical and emotional health, binge eating disorder, bulimia nervosa, anorexia nervosa being the most common.

Numerous studies have been undertaken that show a possible genetic predisposition toward eating disorders as a result of Mendelian inheritance]
Epigenetic mechanisms are means by which environmental effects alter gene expression via methods such as DNA methylation; these are independent of and do not alter the underlying DNA sequence. They are heritable, but also may occur throughout the lifespan, and are potentially reversible. Dysregulation of dopaminergic neurotransmission due to epigenetic mechanisms has been implicated in various eating disoders.
Eating behavior is a complex process controlled by the neuroendocrine system of which the Hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal-axis (HPA axis) is a major component. Dysregulation of the HPA axis has been associated with eating disorders, such as irregularities in the manufacture, amount or transmission of certain neurotransmitters, hormone or neuropeptides and amino acids such as homocysteine, elevated levels of which are found in AN and BN as well as depression.
serotonin: a neurotransmitter involved in depression also has an inhibitory effect on eating behavior.]
norepinephrine is both a neurotransmitter and a hormone; abnormalities in either capacity may affect eating behavior.Dopamine: which in addition to being a precursor of norepinephrine and epinephrine is also a neurotransmitter which regulates the rewarding property of food. Leptin and ghrelin: leptin is a hormone produced primarily by the fat cells in the body; it has an inhibitory effect on appetite by inducing a feeling of saiety. Ghrelin is an appetite inducing hormone produced in the stomach and the upper portion of the small intestine. Circulating levels of both hormones are an important factor in weight control. While often associated with obesity, both hormones and their respective effects have been implicated in the pathophysiology of anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa.
Studies have shown that a majority of patients with anorexia and bulimia nervosa have elevated levels of autoantibodies that affect hormones and neuropeptides that regulate appetite control and the stress response. There may be a direct correlation between autoantibody levels and associated psychological traits.

There have been studies done which show maternal smoking, obstetric and perinatal complications such as maternal anemia, very pre-term birth (32

Adhd Handbook For Schools

adhd handbook for schools

What is the name of this career?

Hello. So I’m looking around at potential careers that I may be interested in pursuing. I’m extremely interested in child psychology, but there is a specific career I’d like to know more about, yet I don’t know the real name for it.
What is the name of the career for someone who goes around to different elementary schools and tests children for disabilities?

At first I was thinking “early intervention psychologist”, but they typically work with kids 2 years old and under. Most physical disabilites are caught by then. Once you get into the older kids, disability testing is often done for less obvious handicaps like dyslexia, ADHD, color blindness, speech impediments, etc. – though some late-stage physical handicaps will emerge.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics’ “Occupational Outlook Handbook” lists “school psychologist” as a generalized field within psychology:

“School psychologists work with students in early childhood and elementary and secondary schools. They collaborate with teachers, parents, and school personnel to create safe, healthy, and supportive learning environments for all students. School psychologists address students’ learning and behavioral problems, suggest improvements to classroom management strategies or parenting techniques, and evaluate students with disabilities and gifted and talented students to help determine the best way to educate them.

They improve teaching, learning, and socialization strategies based on their understanding of the psychology of learning environments. They also may evaluate the effectiveness of academic programs, prevention programs, behavior management procedures, and other services provided in the school setting.”

Some school psychologists are employed by and serve a whole district, while others travel to various districts, private institutions, clinics and state agencies. There are also school social workers and school counselors who might do limited psychological evaluations.

Adhd Is A Myth

adhd is a myth

adhd is a myth

Does classical music really have a calming/soothing effect, or is this just a myth?

My dad, who is mentally ill with ADHD, OCD and severe depression, spends most of his entire waking hours pacing around the house and humming incessantly. To fight this, I blast classical music through the computer’s speakers. I do this mostly to drown out the sound of his humming (which is absolutely insufferable, and which borders on psychological torture) but also because I feel/hope that the classical music could have a calming effect on him.

But it doesn’t work. Every time I turn on the music, he turns it back off again. He says he can’t stand it.

I have seen no evidence whatsoever that piping classical music into the rooms of our home has any effect on his disgusting behavior and habits.

I would at least like to be able to drown out the sound, but even when I’m wearing headphones, I can still hear him. Besides, by wearing headphones and listening to music at loud volumes, I’m unncessarily risking hearing damage.

Your father simply doesn’t want to be calmed or soothed, which explains why he can’t put up with the music. Too bad you have to put up with his humming though.

Why are children in the article. Composition / information on disorders of learning almost every time. Based?

Do people think that disabled people magically outgrow their learning when they Receive a certificate of their high school class or not. I suspect I may have heard of processing disorders. But all I could find on it is the parents of children with abnormalities. With most Other disorders. Such as ADHD (with everything else in the adult ADHD, but typically an article written to the parent). It's disappointing. I think the level of some conflict of interest. The relevant information. Naturally, children, unlike adults next Therefore, diagnostic criteria are slightly different. This also tought to find a way to adults. (Who, like me, work and go to college.) To cope and deal with their problems. I only posted this or not. I plan to consult a doctor. But to get good information. And ideas from various sources.

Questions for parents / teachers to children with ADHD?

Hi! I am a final year student at the University. This year, as part of the thesis, I have to. Completed research on the topic of my choice in the beginning. (Age 3-8 years), I have chosen as ADHD (Attention. Lack of attention deficit disorders), I'm not sure. Whether you're a parent, I have something to say about meditation and study. How do you think your child is treated within their school. They included like other children. Other or not, and teachers how to make you think that children with ADHD will be in the education system? They are or not Thanks a lot! xx.

My son has ADHD. It had been a struggle for him socially, he has always been a problem for the big dance c,. Speak out of turn, etc. So he was sort of saying that the problem maker. Other children, he is annoying. veiwed so they didn't put a lot of time with him. But he is the only school to do more just to "fit." As far as the school staff itself over the years, he has some teachers. Just didn't get it if the child did something wrong, it is my son right away who did it. It was all because of this that I decided to poisoned him. Now he will get most, and since he just changed. To middle school. (Middle school starts in the elementary years. 5 where I live), he is not called trouble makers to the staff to be like them to be restarted. He joined football and making friends. Help with diagnosis of ADHD?

I have a 5 1 / 2 yrs it is shown that the behavior of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder,. Be instigated, shouting or displaying behavior that can It seems obscene to the general public, and we have all been in situations where his behavior was causing disruption in the shop,. ect transport friends and family are aware of his behavior,. Watchers and neighbors are not satisfied that he may have ADHD. He is waiting to receive treatment to help with disorders of the senses he But my children are usually exempt from the birthday ect partys, Connors report has been produced by himself and his school. School, I was talking to his behavior is normal and ordinary. I dont understand how anyone can see this problem and I was actually destroyed. My parents, I want my son to the quality of life they deserve,. Such as cinemas, theaters, etc.. Without any problems with the general public.

Do not slap him. That you never spank a child to comply with mental health problems. To remove your child's pediatrician. You need to get him diagnosed. No shame a child, did not make him feel responsible. Do not ask, "Why can not you just see that you are having a bad behavior? You can not "logic" children from mental problems, I trust my parents with me and I'll try not to talk to them. Longer term stimulant is scary. But in reality there is nothing to fear. You must show him that he was a good kid and he can count on you. Be there for him. That is your job as a parent. We provide mental health professionals to their work by taking the medication correctly and let the school know of his decision. Do not slap him, then it sounds like your parents love because you are worried about the quality of his life. Just make sure they are treated with families and children who have been diagnosed by a professional before making any conclusions. Other ADHD do not respond to care. Company and consistent. attention deficit hyperactivity disorder assessment

I have ADD and my parents dont care?

I know for a fact that i have ADD. Like i honestly just cannot concentrate on assignments in school and what not and i get so angry at myself when i forget things or trail off. This problem is really affecting my grades and i would like to see a doctor about it. Heres the other problem. My parents are stubborn hispanics who dont believe in any of this and think the doctor is a waste of time and that ADD doesnt exist. So no matter how much information i show them or beg them they wont let me see a doctor or anything. Its really fustrating. what should i do?

firstly, its ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) not ADD.

self diagnosis is pretty uncommon, i dont know too many people with ADHD that yell it from the roof tops.

I would suggest that you see some sort of social worker, look in the telephone directory for your local govt dept. Also, I would go see your school guidance councillor or school psychologist, to get an assessment as a starting point.

you may just have a hormonal imbalance due to puberty, or growing, so dont be so sure u have ADHD, only a qualified physician can make that call.

hope it works out.

It was traumatizing children with ADD ADHD. /?

I read online on the website about the Mayo Clinic. ADD / ADHD (because I was there) and said that the discovery of you. Children are ADD / ADHD may be a painful experience. Is why it is not like he has severe autism. I – again – there is a problem with adding and me is that I : 1.have 2 mood swings, can not stop laughing that is even remotely something funny for awhile. 3 4 cry for a long time can not focus and I was on that date. My meds are not just close them.

The discovery that your child has a disorder or disability, some parents are very difficult, although not a very serious disorder. It can be a bit of a shock at first, especially since parents often do not. Know much about the disorder or whether it also affects children in the future. That's why they said it might be a painful experience. Parents hope their children have a bright future and Have a good life ahead of them and sometimes they became worried when something unexpected comes up as the diagnosis of disorders in the long term or for life or medical condition. They are afraid that they Children may have a harder life than they hoped. Do not take it personally this is a normal reaction that has many parents. They tend to get more when they learn more about Disorder and realize that it is not the end of the world.

Professionals also have attention deficit behavior modification in the area. Middle Tennessee?

My son has been diagnosed with ADHD and he was not able to use the drug. I am looking for help options, such as behavior modification.

Check what these are. CHADD Web site for A great organization that should be able to help you. I recommend this magazine. Full of lots of information. Good to read online too. I am not from Tenn. So I can not speak specifically. But I think that these will help. I do not know why your son can not use the drug. But I know that many people will have lots of opinions. Adult education is very good to begin drug use. At 31 I can say that it helped me a lot. But not the magic bullet that I always feel I must say that because so many people who have never experienced input in connection with what Those with abnormalities should do. I think that parents of children Only have it and those who are wrong should be able to talk about UPS and downs of meds. I wish they would have Lucky girl too aware the disease twenty years ago. Well I hope that my thoughts are not too strong. I just hear a lot of negative talk med. (Not from you), but for those who are. Never walk mile in my shoes. I had to try three different meds. And thank God I'm an adult and realize the people who make me angry or too emotional. I can not imagine what it would be like. For the child they say that the very behavior modification. My advice is to read everything,. Support groups to visit and do everything you can to educate myself. That is soooo much more information there. I read the article in the magazine put behavioral change.

im searching for the adverse effect of detergnt in shampoo on the skin?

including sodium lauryl sulphate

sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), is an ionic surfactant that is used in household products such as toothpastes, shampoos, shaving foams and bubble baths for its thickening effect and its ability to create a lather. The molecule has a tail of 12 carbon atoms, attached to a sulfate group, giving the molecule the amphiphilic properties required of a detergent.

An EPA survey concluded that indoor air was 3 to 70 times more polluted than outdoor air. Another EPA study stated that the toxic chemicals in household cleaners are 3 times more likely to cause cancer than outdoor air. CMHC reports that houses today are so energy efficient that “out-gassing” of chemicals has no where to go, so it builds up inside the home. We spend 90% of our time indoors, and 65% of that time at home. Moms, infants and the elderly spend 90% of their time in the home. National Cancer Association released results of a 15-year study concluding that women who work in the home are at a 54% higher risk of developing cancer than women who work outside the home. Cancer rates have almost doubled since 1960.. Cancer is the Number ONE cause of death for children.

There has been a 26% increase in breast cancer since 1982. Breast cancer is the Number ONE killer of women between the ages of 35 and 54. Primary suspects are laundry detergents, household cleaners and pesticides. There has been a call from the U.S./ Canadian Commission to ban bleach in North America. Bleach is being linked to the rising rates of breast cancer in women, reproductive problems in men and learning and behavioral problems in children. Chemicals get into our body through inhalation, ingestion and absorption. We breathe 10 to 20 thousand liters of air per day. There are more than 3 million poisonings every year. Household cleaners are the Number ONE cause of poisoning of children.

Since 1980, asthma has increased by 600%. The Canadian Lung Association and the Asthma Society of Canada identify common household cleaners and cosmetics as triggers. ADD/ADHD are epidemic in schools today. Behavioral problems have long been linked to exposure to toxic chemicals and molds. Chemical and environmental sensitivities are known to cause all types of headaches. Labeling laws do not protect the consumer – they protect big business. The New York Poison Control Center reports that 85% of product warning labels were either inadequate or incorrect for identifying a poison, and for first aid instructions. Formaldehyde, phenol, benzene, toluene, xylene are found in common household cleaners, cosmetics, beverages, fabrics and cigarette smoke. These chemicals are cancer causing and toxic to the immune system.

Chemicals are attracted to, and stored in fatty tissue. The brain is a prime target for these destructive organics because of its high fat content and very rich blood supply. The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health has found more than 2500 chemicals in cosmetics that are toxic, cause tumors, reproductive complications, biological mutations and skin and eye irritations. Fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, arthritis, lupus, multiple sclerosis, circulatory disorders, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s disease, irritable bowel syndrome, depression, and hormonal problems are diseases commonly related to chemical exposure.

Pesticides only have to include active ingredients on the labels, even though the inert (inactive) ingredients may account for 99%, many of which are toxic and poisons. More facts follow from Indoor Air Pollution Seminar. Our homes should have a complete change of air 3 or 4 times a day. New homes are built so airtight that it is impossible to get a complete change of air. We should leave our windows open on each side of our house for better cross ventilation.

In Alberta last year accidental poisoning statistics were as follows:
Between the ages of:

0 – 4 years – 11, 515 poisonings
5 – 10 years – 1,524
11 – 19 years 1,019
20 and over 7,799

The top three culprits according to Poison Control: Household cleaners, bleach and medications. In the USA the #1 cause of accidental poisoning is Dawn Dishwashing Detergent (c). WHY? Because it is the #1 seller. Tide contains Lye and is the #1 polluter. It is also the #1 seller.

Deep Woods and Off have an ingredient called DEET. DEET causes seizures in children and adults. Inert (or inactive) ingredients in products are protected by trade secrets and very dangerous. In the work place Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) must accompany any product used. The work place and the outdoors are considered “legal environments” while the air in homes is not. So regulations for outdoor air pollution and toxins in the workplace are much more strict than in the home.

The ideal humidity rate is 35-45%. Higher rates cause mold. Use of humidifiers and dehumidifiers with standing water encourages mold growth in the water. The ideal temperature for homes is 68-72 degrees. Higher temperatures make chemicals more active. When we shower, the hot water aerates the chlorine and can cause headaches as can the use of aerosols. Steam from our dryer vents is extremely toxic from the chemicals in fabric softener sheets and residues from detergents and bleach.

Chemicals used to dry clean clothing are very dangerous and can cause cancer. When you bring dry cleaning home you should hang it outside for at least 3 days. Dry cleaning chemicals are the same cancer causing chemicals in mothballs. There are 4700 chemicals in tobacco smoke. Formaldehyde is one of the largest indoor pollutants in our homes. Products containing Formaldehyde include:

Permanent Press clothing
Floor waxes and furniture polishes
Wax Paper
Paper Money

Symptoms caused by formaldehyde are: Allergies, cancer, immune system failings and asthma

Phenols are a major indoor pollutant. Phenols are absorbed by lungs, and skin. Symptoms include caustic burns, kidney and liver damage and hyperactivity. Products containing Phenols include:

Acne medications
Baking Powder
TV sets
Sugar substitutes

Do you think the major products are safe? WRONG! Lysol (c) is even more dangerous than we thought. It contains phenols and dioxin (Agent Orange). Bleach must be safe because people have been using it for years, right? WRONG! When using bleach, antiseptics or chlorine in industrial areas you are required by OSHA to wear impervious protective clothing, hard hats, boots, gloves, apron or coveralls, chemical goggles or full face shield and use only in well ventilated areas.

When using Easy Off (c) make sure all your skin is covered, wear protective clothing, do not breath in and don’t get on your enamel, (if this product will hurt the enamel on your stove, can you imagine what it will do to us?).

NTAs were banned in 1970. Lobbying by Proctor & Gamble in 1980 put them back into home products although they are extremely cancer causing. What are they for? ONLY to make more suds in detergents to make you think your clothes are getting cleaner.

Our immune system is very powerful, like a janitorial system. Giving our bodies good nutrition means our body can repair itself and be able to handle what we face in the world. Household chemicals cause all kinds of symptoms – from cardiovascular problems, panic attacks, and anxiety attacks to bedwetting.

Eliminating the cause of the environmental illness is more effective and much less expensive than treating the symptoms. Prevention – 80% – 90% effective. Treatments – 50% – 60% effective. What seems to make the most sense? How can you find help?

Throughout Dr. Woods’ entire presentation, she never mentioned our company’s name. At the end, when asked, she pointed at a display of the products we recommend and said, I use these products. I have done a lot of research and have not been able to find better products anywhere. If I do find better products, I will use them.

adhd treatment options for adults

what to do when you’re depressed?

I’m a 15 year old girl and ADHD. I took medication for 5 years when I was younger and then stopped. My parents feel as though that should be my last option at this point… but I’ve been really depressed lately. I’ve been exercising a lot and eating regularly, but I always feel like I want to cry. I’m not even particularly sad about anything. I watch good movies, listen to good music… nothing seems to be working? Any suggestions? Please don’t let drugs be the answer..
visit to get the answers to all your questions.
when you say u have no reason to be depressed, i say maybe u don’t have a reason to be happy . This is what makes you traumatized. Visit these pages n specially the www.personalityquiz one it is just amazing. I thing for getting out of it u should firstly study yourself and this website can give all your answers but as soon as you discover yourself, try to also know your interests what you like for eg. if i like dancing and learning dancing i surf different websites to learn new dance moves this keeps me busy as well as excited as i do what i like. Other than that u should have an aim in your life bigger or smaller take inspirations from people u like “sources of inspiration are all around, what u need to do is to imbibe them”
I do the same thing i have a lot of ambitions in life and therefore want to live life to fulfill them and therefore i am optimistic and know that i can get what i want.
—ADHD can present challenges across all areas of life, from getting organized at home to reaching your potential at work. It can be tough on your health and both your personal and on-the-job relationships. Your symptoms may lead to extreme procrastination, trouble making deadlines, and impulsive behavior. In addition, you may feel that friends and family don’t understand what you’re up against.
Fortunately, there are skills you can learn to help get your symptoms of ADD/ADHD under control. You can improve your daily habits, learn to recognize and use your strengths, and develop techniques that help you work more efficiently, increase organization, and interact better with others. Change won’t happen overnight, though. These ADD/ADHD self-help strategies require practice, patience, and, perhaps most importantly, a positive attitude.
While medication can help some people manage the symptoms ADD/ADHD, it is not a cure, nor the only solution. If used at all, it should be taken alongside other treatments or self-help strategies.—
this is what says
I think u should do a bit of researches on spirituality things and also do meditation this gives u peace of mind
ALL the best

Can you get a third class medical with adderal?

I’m 15 and I solo fly in 5 months. I have to get my medical soon and it’s required that I have at least a 3rd class medical. I know that the FAA recently granted pilots to use antidepressants so what’s the story behind adderal / Ritalin and having ADD/ADHD? I don’t take any neurological enhancements nor do I use any drugs whatsoever. My GPA is about a 3.9 (freshmen) but I want to be able to maximize my capabilities as far as my education goes. I want to pursue flying, and possibly go to the Air Force Academy, what’s the status with pilots taking neurological enhancements in the Air Force? Thanks allot for the help. This post is on April of 2010, so please be current with me. Thanks again.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but you’re probably not going to be eligible for a Class III Medical nor will you be eligible for Air Force training as a pilot. You’re going to have to be off the medication for awhile and clinically be able to show that you’re stable without it. With luck you may grow out of it in a few years anyway. This is from a trustworthy source:

“Attention Deficit (ADD) – Ritalin (Methylphenidate Hydrochloride), Adderall (Dextroamphetamine Sulfate) and Strattera (Atomoxetine Hydrochloride) are usually not approved by the FAA. Under rare circumstances, individuals using Ritalin have been approved with restrictions. Approval is more likely for adults due to the difficulty in accurately evaluating ADD in young people and typically requires time off medication prior to flight.”
