what are the similarities and differences between NLD and asperger’s syndrome?

what are the similarities and differences between NLD and ADHD?

Nonnverbal learning disorders (NLD) frequently manifest disturbances in spatial orientation, body image, facial recognition, visual-motor organization, social interaction, handwriting, mathematics and problem-solving abilities (Keller, 1998). The individual with a NLD exhibits superior language ability (left hemisphere performance), but weak nonverbal performance (right hemisphere performance). Hence the child with a NLD will be analytical, and gifted in understanding details, but unable to master the ‘whole picture’. Math and nonverbal activities are weak areas, as are social interactions, because the child is unable to utilize information from facial expressions or gestures. The NLD psychological profile is often confused with the Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) profile, as hyperactivity is a behavior seen in either disorder (Keller, 1998).

ADHD is a neurological disorder with hallmark symptoms of inattention, impulsivity and distractibility (Barkley, 1990). Children with ADHD manifest poor handwriting, weak expressive language skills, weak sequencing ability, require repetition with directions, act as if they have a hearing loss, display low tolerance to noise, misunderstand the spoken message, and weak reading comprehension skills (Barkley, 1990). Individuals with ADHD are at risk for auditory processing disorders (APD) in the areas of Tolerance-Fading Memory (TFM) and Organization categories (Katz and Smith, 1991; Keller, 1998).

Under what field of science would eating disorders be in?

Contrary to common belief eating disorders are covered by a mutitued of sciences.

Eating disorders refer to a group of conditions characterized by abnormal eating habits that may involve either insufficient or excessive food intake to the detriment of an individual’s physical and emotional health, binge eating disorder, bulimia nervosa, anorexia nervosa being the most common.

Numerous studies have been undertaken that show a possible genetic predisposition toward eating disorders as a result of Mendelian inheritance]
Epigenetic mechanisms are means by which environmental effects alter gene expression via methods such as DNA methylation; these are independent of and do not alter the underlying DNA sequence. They are heritable, but also may occur throughout the lifespan, and are potentially reversible. Dysregulation of dopaminergic neurotransmission due to epigenetic mechanisms has been implicated in various eating disoders.
Eating behavior is a complex process controlled by the neuroendocrine system of which the Hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal-axis (HPA axis) is a major component. Dysregulation of the HPA axis has been associated with eating disorders, such as irregularities in the manufacture, amount or transmission of certain neurotransmitters, hormone or neuropeptides and amino acids such as homocysteine, elevated levels of which are found in AN and BN as well as depression.
serotonin: a neurotransmitter involved in depression also has an inhibitory effect on eating behavior.]
norepinephrine is both a neurotransmitter and a hormone; abnormalities in either capacity may affect eating behavior.Dopamine: which in addition to being a precursor of norepinephrine and epinephrine is also a neurotransmitter which regulates the rewarding property of food. Leptin and ghrelin: leptin is a hormone produced primarily by the fat cells in the body; it has an inhibitory effect on appetite by inducing a feeling of saiety. Ghrelin is an appetite inducing hormone produced in the stomach and the upper portion of the small intestine. Circulating levels of both hormones are an important factor in weight control. While often associated with obesity, both hormones and their respective effects have been implicated in the pathophysiology of anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa.
Studies have shown that a majority of patients with anorexia and bulimia nervosa have elevated levels of autoantibodies that affect hormones and neuropeptides that regulate appetite control and the stress response. There may be a direct correlation between autoantibody levels and associated psychological traits.

There have been studies done which show maternal smoking, obstetric and perinatal complications such as maternal anemia, very pre-term birth (32

attention deficit hyperactivity disorder pathophysiology

where can i find information on: affective disorder and somotaform disorder?

The affective spectrum is a grouping of related psychiatric and medical disorders which may accompany bipolar, unipolar, and schizoaffective disorders at statistically higher rates than would normally be expected. These disorders are identified by a common positive response to the same types of pharmacologic treatments. They also aggregate strongly in families and may therefore share common heritable underlying physiologic anomalies.

Affective spectrum disorders include:

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder
Bipolar disorder
Body dysmorphic disorder
Bulimia nervosa and other eating disorders
Fibromyalgia, including chronic fatigue syndrome
General anxiety disorder
Impulse-control disorders
Irritable bowel syndrome
Major Depressive Disorder
Multiple Chemical Sensitivity
Obsessive-compulsive disorder
Panic disorder
Posttraumatic stress disorder
Premenstrual dysphoric disorder
Social phobia
The following may also be part of the spectrum accompanying affective disorders.

Chronic pain
Gulf War Syndrome
Intermittent explosive disorder
Pathological gambling
Personality disorder
Substance abuse and addiction (includes alcoholism)
Also, there are now studies linking heart disease.

Please note that many of the terms above overlap. The generally accepted definition of these terms can be found in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM).

adhd guidelines australia

is there a blood test for ad/hd?

No such thing can be determined by blood test. There are usually questions, filling out tests, psych exams, etc. to determine such things.

A diagnosis of ADHD is based on a checklist of symptoms from DSM-IV-TR.

Clinical Guidelines
The American Academy of Pediatrics Clinical Practice Guideline for children with ADHD emphasizes that a reliable diagnosis requires:

The use of explicit criteria for the diagnosis using the DSM-IV-TR.
The importance of obtaining information about the child’s symptoms in more than 1 setting (especially from schools).
The search for coexisting conditions that may make the diagnosis more difficult or complicate treatment planning.
Item 1. is dealt with by using an ADHD-specific instrument such as the Connor’s Scale. The use of methods such as questionnaires that attempt to identify other conditions as well as ADHD would not meet this requirement. Diagnosis based on a clinician’s, teacher’s or parent’s opinion, without the use of a scale such as Conners would also be invalid.

Item 2. emphasizes that the DSM-IV requires that the behaviors be present in more than one setting, normally school and home. (This is a significant change from the DSM-III criteria – see #Historical background). A diagnosis based on the a Connors Scale completed only for one setting would therefore be invalid.

The requirement that it be present in two settings is important because in the majority of cases observers in different settings do not agree on the child’s behaviour. In studies that used both teachers and parents in the United States, Canada and Australia the difference has been significant. For example, one of these studies (Wolraich, 2004) found American teachers identified ADHD in 25.5% of a group of 6,171 children but parents identified it in only 7.8%

Adhd History Wiki

adhd history wiki

Is there a nutrient supplement recommended for users of Adderal?

Being a stimulant, I was wondering what depletion it might cause.

Coz you are in alternative medicine section, just a piece of thought for you.

Why are actually taking adderall in the first place when you do have some excellent natural alternatives available.

Adderall has a high abuse potential. Because Adderall has a powerful effect of increasing blood pressure, it carries the same risk of sudden death, stroke, and heart attack in patients with pre-existing heart conditions, as does methylphenidate and other stimulants used to treat ADHD, as well as the same risk of seizures in patients with a history of seizures.[1][27] Studies of long-term use of Adderall and methylphenidate in children have shown a temporary decrease in growth rate that does not affect final adult height.[28] Stimulant medications also decrease appetite in some people, leading to weight loss, and this effect is more common with Adderall than methylphenidate[28] or atomoxetine. Changes in vision have been reported with both Adderall and methylphenidate.[1][27] “In extreme cases, the drug can cause paranoia, zombie-like psychosis, hallucinations and heart attacks.”[29]

There are also alternative solutions for ADD and ADHD available. Making simple changes in diet, sleep, exercise, and routine can help. Even trying more involved approaches like incorporating relaxation therapies such as guided imagery, meditation techniques, or yoga can be beneficial.

There are also many herbal and homeopathic remedies which can help maintain harmony, health, and systemic balance in the brain and nervous system, without side effects or sedation. These products are known for their supportive function in maintaining brain, nervous system and circulatory health, and well-being, while reducing or eliminating adult ADHD symptoms. This is based on assumption that you take it for ADHD.

Some herbs and biochemic tissue salts that have been found equally effective but without side effects are Ginkgo Biloba, Scuttellaria laterifolia (Skullcap), Gotu cola, Kalium phosphate, Passion Flower, Rooibos etc.

You may get detailed info on these here

Autism: The Range Of Function

Autism is a syndrome that comes from exhibiting certain combinations or patterns of behavior. Low functioning autism is the term used to describe autistic individuals that are not able to function or deal with every day life. Normal to high functioning autism is used to describe people that exhibit autistic behaviors that are in fact able to deal with real world activities and normal day to day life. Many people diagnosed with autism end up living in less then ideal conditions. Autism is a developmental disorder, that affects many areas of human function such as language, and the ability to communicate. It affects self-help skills, coordination, and the ability of an individual to learn.

Common Behaviors

There are several common traits that will aid in the diagnosis of autism. These traits include, the tendency to stay in isolation or be away from others. Autistic individuals will have a hard time making friends and will seem very awkward in social situations. An autistic person will very rarely look some else in the eye. They will be very naive and easily swayed or manipulated. They are often quite gullible. When an autistic person speaks they will often so so using very formal language. They may speak in a monotone and their use of body language may be very poor. (such as nodding “no” while saying “yes”. Autistic people will generally prefer common routines, they may be very literal in their use of language and may remember and recite a lot of detail without having a lot of understanding. They may also exhibit hyper- or hypo- sensitivity of the senses, have odd tastes in food and clothing as well as very fine or very grossly exaggerated motor coordination.

The more of the above traits an individual exhibits the more severe the case of autism is said to be. In some cases the above symptoms may become helpfully in certain disciplines like science, math, and engineering. These disciplines require a lot of memorization and many autistic’s are quite proficient in these subjects as a result.

Autism and ADHD?

There has been some discussion on about a genetic as well as behavioral link between ADHD and autism. Some experts believe that ADHD should be put considered as a form of autistic spectrum disorder. It is quite common to have children diagnosed with both ADHD and autism together. In children, the two disorders seem very much alike. As the individuals age, the disorders grow and become more apparent. Children with ADHD will often develop normal social skills and be able to communicate with their peers and with others. Autistic children however will continue to show symptoms even as they age. there is still much to learn about the autism spectrum. Even with current advances in technology and medical science, a cure for this condition remains a mystery. The more we study the sooner we will understand the disorder and be able to help those who are diagnosed with this condition.

Is ADHD carried from parents to their children?

Hi, my name’s Nicole and I’m 12 years old. Just a few days ago, I found out my 9 year old brother has ADHD. At that point, I started crying. Not because he has the disorder, but the fact that doctors decided to label him what I sort of do not believe he doesn’t have. I mean, there’s nothing wrong with my brother. Sure, he’s had anger issues with the past, but I know an autistic person or a person with a disorder when I see one.

(there’s an Asian boy in my math class that has autism but he’s my friend and he’s just like any other person, me and him play Slide Baby a lot)

Anyway, I wanted to know if possible my parents could’ve been diagnosed with ADHD, and it could have passed onto me also. Or is it just an genetic disorder? Please give me all the information you know about ADHD, and also the genetic information!! Thankyou!!

(I’m really into sciene and genes)

Yea its possible!

10 Advantages of Having ADD

There is a widespread mistaken belief in the world that getting Attention Deficit Disorder or ADD is a dreadful thing. Even as the ADD afflicted brain without doubt holds out a few risks, it puts forward a few hard to believe advantages as well. Given below is a listing of mannerisms that I over and over again see in my patrons, friends, and contemporaries with ADD.

1. Empathy

People with ADD have an incredible control to associate with other people. But it goes a notch ahead than that. We also have a highly developed capability to identify with others, and to see a lot of diverse point of views.

2. Ingenuity

I have on no account come across an ADDer who was not ingenious. Painters, designers, sculptors, film makers, writers, musicians, and comedians – the list goes on. Creative aptitudes are plentiful. Composers Mozart and Beethoven are assumed to have had ADD.

3. Enthusiasm

When an ADDer is fed up with a job, finishing it can look as if like torment. But provide an ADDer an attention grabbing task to work on and look out. When we would like to achieve something, and we have the essential tools to do so, there is no stopping us.

4. Problem Solving Capability

ADDers flourish on deciphering puzzles and problems. Provide us with an attention grabbing problem to crack and we will not be able to leave it until we have established the explanation. Significant historical inventors such as Thomas Edison and Thomas Jefferson are assumed to have had ADD.

5. Hyper-Focus

The capacity to hyper-focus is something that ADDers can make use of to our benefit. When kept under control and aimed towards fruitful jobs, like achieving objectives and living dreams, it can be an unbelievable positive feature that allows us to get the work done, and done well.

6. Sense of Humor/Flair for Comedy

Nearly all ADDers love to laugh, and a lot of them have an ability to make others laugh as well. Well known humorists such as Whoopi Goldberg and Robin Williams are believed to have ADD.

7. Spirit

There is no doubt that despite the fact that there are many great traits that come alongside with ADD, there are also challenge. But ADDers have a hard to believe capability to spring back back from those challenges, and others’ condemnation of those challenges that we have undergone.

8. Intuitiveness

ADDers have a quick sense of perception. This may be as a result of extremely refrained intensity of awareness, or great innate knowledge of the human mind, or something else that we have thus far to comprehend. No matter what the explanation is, it is a very valuable gift.

9. Idea Generating

ADDers are brilliant proposal makers. We do not by and large like to be troubled with particulars, but we can crop up with thoughts in no time at all. We are a real benefit in brainstorming meetings.

10. That “Special Something”

A lot of ADDers believe that they have an exceptional way of looking at the world, a point of view that others simply do not comprehend. That is, until the ADDer comes across other people with ADD. You may say that we are on our own wavelength.

adhd environmental

is the number of kids with ADD, ADHD, OCD etc ??

A. an excuse for parents who cannot dicipline their children?

B. always been the same but now we can diagnose and treat the conditions?

C. The result of environmental factors such as excess TV, excess exposure of EMF to fetuses, parental drug use, lack of exercise, inadequate diets etc?

Please provide your answer and expound.

C. The amount of toxins in today’s lifestyle are enormous. As you can see, I have four kids of my own. My daughter (eldest) used to go completely hysterical whenever she didn’t get what she wanted. She could not control her emotions. My first son (I have 3), would NEVER do what he was told. I thought they just had difficult personalities, like me. I had depression for years, and I was so “up and down” all the time. I could never predict how I would react to any given situation.

My husband put us all on the FAILSAFE diet and it changed our lives. I now have stable, happy moods. My daughter (6yo) is very helpful, considerate and stable emotionally, my son (4yo) actually considers the things that we say and can be talked around. Previously he was completely stubborn and defiant.

The toxins we removed from our diets include all artificial additives (preservatives, anti-oxidants, colours, flavours). We also removed salicylates, amines and glutamates, which are all naturally occuring chemicals in natural foods. Tomatoes and cheese are some things that used to be staples in our diet, but now we avoid, as they cause bad behavioural reactions in all of us. My son also reacts (behaviourally) to dairy products. (My other two kids are still a bit too young to have diet modification… one still breast fed).

Anyway, IMO, toxins in food and household products (eg shampoo, coloured play-dough, paint, soap, detergent, etc) all play a major role in behavioural problems in both adults and children.

I actually read a study on prison inmates whose diets were changed, and their behaviours became normal!

While parenting skills does play a part in some situations, you’ve got to ask if the “bad parents” are, like their children, suffering from food intolerance reactions. Getting the diet right helps so much for the whole family.

Natural and Safe Help for Adhd in Kids?

My son was diagnosed with Adhd 2 weeks ago.He is 4 yrs old and the doctor prescribed Vyvanse 30mg, but I have yet to give the medicine to him. I dont want to give it to him after reading the scary stuff online about the medication. It is a schedule 2 controlled drug/ stimulant. No special testing was done on my child, they based the diagnosis soley on the forms that they handed us and his teachers to fill out about his behavior. I am looking for safe alternatives for treating his adhd. He has trouble sleeping and aggressive and impulsive behaviors. He acts as if he has drank a pot of coffee every morning.

Oh boy. My brother and sister both have it. They were diagnosed when they were young also. Both are now 18. They acted the same exact way. It was so frustrating. When my brother was young he took ritalin. They thought it had addictive qualities so they change it on him. He was on adderall, concerta, and is now on prozac. The concerta seamed to work the best. It really does help a lot. Right now niether of them are on it and have some serious problems. I don’t know why he isn’t on it. Honestly though the meds helps so much. My parents hated giving it to them also but they were too much to handle without it. Hopefully your son might be different or you can find an alternative. My parents still really struggle with them. Good luck. Hope this helps

What is Bipolar Depression?

Around 10% of all Americans suffer from some form of depression during their lives. If you did your research you’d find that almost all developed countries around the world suffer from similar statistics.

Depression in general affects the way we behave from our sleeping patters up to the way we think and live life.

Here are some signs you should look out for:
• Insomnia
• Headaches
• Eating and digestive disorders
• Lack of motivation
• Lack of concentration
• Fatigue

Depression has many types and sometimes therapist can get them mixed up with other forms of depression. One of the most severe cases of depression is “Bipolar Depression.” Some people believe that Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Bipolar depression are closely related and can sometimes confuse therapists.

The difference between depression and bipolar depression is in the severity mentality and behaviour. A person suffering fro bipolar depression is said to have manic episodes. It’s a severe episode and will repeat itself four times in ten years on average when untreated. The manic episodes can be predicted because it usually runs in a cycle that is distinguishable to each character.

Today’s scientists believe that bipolar depression is strongly related to genetics. It is also said that bipolar depression occurs in adolescence or in early adulthood and may continue throughout life if untreated.

Treating Bipolar Depression

The most current treatment is very effective in treating bipolar depression. However in most cases due to the mood swings they go through, they often turn towards drugs and alcohol abuse to suppress their state. This maybe lead to loss of job, marriage issues, social issues and more.

Most bipolar depression patients on treatment often discontinue with their treatment or don’t comply by them. While patients are in their manic episodes, some of them feel comfortable in this state of mind and this is a serious problem with their perception and can often distort their behaviour causing more problems in the future.

Someone on bipolar depression often lack the ability to concentrate and think in a logical way and often run the risk of no complying with their treatment and turn to drugs and or alcohol and could turn into an addict.

In conclusion it is strongly recommend that anyone with bipolar depression starts and continues treatment if they have already seen their doctor. It can affect a person’s entire life and change it upside down if they let it.

Alternative Attention Deficit Disorder Treatment – is There a Natural Adhd Remedy?

Parents with ADHD children know all about the difficulty of trying to raise their child properly and having to cope with the extreme behavioral problems that come with the disorder. In response to this new modern epidemic mainstream medical companies have of course made products that can help solve the child’s problem (and their parent’s frustration!) by the use of drugs such as Ritalin and Adderall. To compliment this many also send their children to behavioral therapy which is expensive and time consuming; a perfect combination for an industry trying to make money out of a serious problem. Recently however studies have shown that ADHD drugs do not cure the problem but simply put off the problem without curing it. Add to this that the studies show the drugs may stunt growth and may also cause long term problems that have not been totally confirmed and we can see drugs may not be the answer. So what alternative attention deficit disorder treatments are there and can there be a totally natural adhd treatment so that parents can be assured of a healthy and happy child, and do they work? Let’s look at a few examples:

One approach to changing a child’s behavior that has become popular is to control, their diet to cut out certain foods and additives that promote hyperactive behavior and increase or decrease nutrients that help with focusing and calmness. This approach is often very healthy as the diets are usually quite good if not exciting. The biggest problem usually lies in sugar and caffeine but there are also many other surprising foods that may make more of an impact than you think. The downsides are that it is hard to get an ADHD kid to eat all the things you prepare as they are used to a different more exiting diet. If you can get them to stick to the changes there are many children who may benefit from this but not everyone has had immediate success with just this approach depending on the severity of their disorder.

Behavior modification programs

This is a system of changing the way a child acts by rewarding them for good behavior and not giving in and giving them what they want for bad behavior. While most parents do this to a degree anyway many have taken this to a new level by making it into a game by scoring the child and promoting active tasks. While this may not eliminate ADHD it can modify some more antisocial and aggressive behaviors if you can channel that energy into useful things. Not all children take to this however and it can end up being a battle to get them to participate but still a large number of people have managed to turn the whirlwind energy of the child into a force for good!

This is a newer treatment that revolves around the brainwave patterns that an ADHD sufferer experiences. By measuring brainwaves through a machine it is possible to adjust these patterns by rewarding the right brainwaves via a computer game or some other learning tool, when the person does the right thing mentally they are rewarded and the brain responds by adjusting the way it behaves. This is less invasive than it sounds as sensors are placed on the scalp to measure the brainwaves but no other equipment is actually touching the child. This requires some significant resources however and is not readily available.

Auditory Integration Training

There is evidence to support then notion that some learning disabilities ADHD included are a result of a problem with a child’s hearing. Problems like this can cause a child to “tune out” or cover their ears or become aggressive when particular sounds or frequencies are heard. The treatment that goes with this focuses on using sounds that stimulate the possible problem areas of the inner ear and the way it interacts with the brain. By modulating and adjusting these frequencies it is possible to gain long term benefit to their hearing and also short term increases to attention span and social behaviors.

As we can see there are many alternative attention deficit disorder treatments that do not require mind altering drugs but work holistically and naturally. Some even focus on simply redirecting the ADHD sufferers energy into beneficial things implying that it can be a blessing not a curse if refocused. In any event there are options for natural ADHD remedies that have had proven success!

Young Adults and Mental Illness-what are the Warning Signs?

Mental illness is not just an affliction that you are born with; mental illnesses can develop over time, whether as something that was predestined to occur or as an illness that develops over time. While some mental illnesses are certainly not generally found in young people, like Alzheimer’s disease, others such as depression can strike as early as childhood and mental illnesses like ADHD, though over diagnosed, does affect many children and adults.

Young adults can suffer from a wide range of mental illnesses, and are more commonly afflicted for the first time than any other age group because of their rapidly developing brains and the many new circumstances to which they are exposed to during their late teens and early twenties. Young adults are not necessarily particularly vulnerable; however, whatever mental illnesses they were possibly born with are more likely to come out of dormancy at this point in their lives.

Schizophrenia is one mental illness that often strikes for the first time in young adults. Individuals may suffer moodiness or paranoia, which can both be potentially recognized by a loved one and reported to the individual’s physician. Other warning signs might include the young adult hearing voices or seeing things that are not there. Schizophrenic individuals may also experience apathy or lack of emotions and might become worse at social functions. They may also begin to have trouble concentrating or following directions and completing tasks, and their memories might suffer. Schizophrenic patients also almost always begin feeling depressed before their symptoms degenerate.

Depression is another mental illness that is very common in young adults. It is characterized by feelings of extreme helplessness, hopelessness, and is not nearly the same thing as “feeling blue” or being “down”. Depression is a serious mental condition that affects millions of Americans, and can cause suicidal thoughts as well as over, or under-eating, over, or under-sleeping, and a change in moods. Depression is not something that people can just “get over” or “snap out of”, and may in fact require medication or therapy or a combination of both before the individual begins to see a lifting of their symptoms. The symptoms of depression can come and go, and are similar but slightly different from the symptoms of bipolar disorder.

Bipolar disorder, which is also known as manic depression, can be managed with medication. It is characterized with intense manic or “high” periods in which the individual becomes overly enthusiastic or optimistic and may begin tasks or plans that are not feasible. These high periods are followed by crashes and intense “lows”, which can involve sleeping all day, feeling hopeless, suicide attempts, and other symptoms shared with depression.

ADHD is more of a disorder than a disease as it does not often seriously impair a young adult’s ability to function normally in society, however it is possible for a young adult to have ADHD that does affect their ability to hold a job or otherwise function individually. This disorder often involves an inability to focus, being easily distracted, and similar kinds of symptoms. It may be made apparent in forgetfulness that is almost chronic or in an inability to hold still, and also with a hyper-focus on certain activities.

The diagnosis of a mental illness should be left to medical professionals; however it is often up to the family and loved ones of the affected young adult to recognize the symptoms before the individual can get treatment. Many mentally ill individuals do not know that they are suffering, or do not wish for various reasons related to their illness to seek treatment on their own.

People who love anyone affected by the above mentioned mental illnesses and by other mental illnesses should make a list of the specific symptoms that they see so that they can present these symptoms to a mental health specialist. Symptoms that you should look out for include changes in sleeping and eating patters, weight gain or loss, changes in personality, an inability to function normally, paranoia, aggression, and other unusual behavior. Even a feeling that something is “off” with a loved one might warrant extra attention or even investigation to help them get help with their mental illness.

No matter what symptoms are displayed, no diagnosis can be made until the individual who is suffering is taken to a doctor. A person taken to the hospital by police is likely to be treated and released quickly without enough attention paid to their actual needs. It is up to the family and loved ones of young adults affected by mental illness to get them help.

How Can I Help Keep My ADHD Son From Wandering Off?

My 9 yr. old son Austin often doesn’t think before wandering off too far away from home or while walking in front of us in a public place. I used to do this somewhat as a child, and I was either spanked for it, or made to write 500 times “I will tell my parents where I’m going” but punishment never helped me remember. I don’t want to “punish” him, but I am looking for some innovative ways to try to teach him the importance of staying close to us or the house.
The other day he chased our dog who ran off and was gone for almost an hour and it was getting dark. My husband was almost ready to call the police but then found him about 1/2 mile from our house, with the dog, on his way home. He was shaking and crying.
He said he had to follow T-Bone, because he was so afraid of losing his “best friend,” which is sweet, but he gave us a heart attack in the meantime. We live in the woods so being alone at night is not good.
Anybody got any really good suggestions? We’d sooo appreciate it!

Tell him
“Its my job to keep you safe”
Have him answer you
“Its my job to keep it that way”

Explain to him each time why it isn’t safe to wander away from your home.

Empathize with him regarding what he feels (T-Bone) but insist he should think of his personal safety.
Focus on what you want him to do and always stay eye level and calm when telling him what you expect.

When he shows restraint REWARD that. Tell him what you see, recognize the change and praise him for it.

just looking for your thoughts about our children today?

i just read an article from the news about a 4 year old child who died a slow death from an overdose on ADHD drugs and Depikote for bi-polor disorder… the parents kept her and her brother and sister dopped up on these drugs all the time… the 4 year olds teacher had said something to the parents, the pharmisit said something, the neibor said something and no one did anything about it. now this 4 yr old child is dead.. this disturbes me on many different levels… for 1 why are we allowing these doctors to perscribe these drugs to our kids, why do we let them diagnose our kids with things like ADHD and bi- polor disorder at so young an age or at all for that matter.. they say be carefull how you disapline your kids because it could lead to problems later in life! Ha! what about the problems they”re causing… i”m sorry but every kid acts up, talks a lot, and gets distacted easily… you know sometimes a good pop on the butt can do the trick just fine. ?

What ever happened to spanking?
My 4 year old is completely regular. Get in trouble a few times a day, testing the limitations of my patients. There have been plenty of times when I’m sure she shows signs of ADHD, she’s freaking 4!!!
I am sick and tired of parents medicating their children to get them to “behave” or “act like normally”. What is normal? Get off your butts you lazy moms and dads, and discipline your child, not medicate!!!
After years of time outs, spankings on the butt (I don’t beat my kids, just one good swat thru the pants does the trick) and taking away all the good toys and even more imaginative punishments to deter bad behavior should drugs be considered. You are giving parents of the truly sick children a really bad name.

When Women Have Adult ADD

Maybe you were shocked to learn that you had ADD when you took your child for an evaluation. The truth is that ADD runs in families. There’s a 25 – 35% likelihood that if you have ADD, your child may have it, too. You can’t feel bad about it and be depressed because you think that your son or daughter has ADD because of you. That kind of thinking is just depressing. On the other hand, you may have been relieved to learn that the feelings you’d had since childhood were actually ADD. You could finally put a label to it. Take a positive attitude and focus on your strengths and weaknesses. By doing this, you’ll be on the path to ADD success for both you and your child.

Women who are married with children find that ADD can be particularly stressful. Since the woman is expected, in most households, to be responsible for organization. When ADD causes you to be less organized than society expects, this can promote feelings of guilt and intense frustration.

You might find these tips helpful:

Business, just by its very nature has certain structures, and if you have ADD, this probably helps you because you know what to expect next. But at home, this is totally not the case, unless you make it so. Try to make some simple scheduling there, and especially if you work outside your home, it will tend to make your home life less overwhelming.

Delegate some of that housework to your partner, if they don’t already chip in and do some of it for you. If your kids are at least 5, you can give them simple chores to do, too, like setting the table. Don’t feel guilty about making your kids work, either. They need to have a way to learn responsibility. They also need to learn the value of money, and if you give them an allowance for the work they do, you’ll be accomplishing three things: You’re alleviating some of your own burden, you’re teaching your kids responsibility, and you’re also teaching them the value of money.

Then, decide what you’re still responsible for doing and schedule it all into some kind of planner. Make sure you have access to it 24/7. It can be paper or electronic. Just be sure you can keep it with you most of the day, every day. Make Mondays your dusting day, Tuesday can be laundry day. Wednesday might be grocery shopping day or whatever suits you. Once you have written everything down, it won’t look as bad as it did in your mind’s eye when you were thinking about all that you had to do. Plus, you won’t have to worry about forgetting anything because it will be written down and you’ll have it front of you at all times.

Another good way to structure your day a bit is to wake up and go to bed at the same times every day. Have your meals and snacks at the same time. Play with your kids at the same time, and so on. Your whole life shouldn’t be slave to ritual, but adding some structure will keep you less frantic over what comes next. If you work, this can be particularly true. Maybe try to have “dinner out” one night, “family fun” night, “study” night, or whatever. Putting some scheduling into your otherwise haphazard day may help you to feel better.

Some people with ADD also have anger management issues. When all hell is breaking loose around you–the kids are fighting, the dog’s barking, and you’re just trying to get dinner on the table–don’t take it out on the kids. That’s just bad for everyone concerned.

Of course, we can’t always be in control. So, take preventive steps. Ask someone else to watch the kids while you’re trying to cook, and make it enjoyable, rather than a circus. Or, don’t cook at all! You just might be able to afford to have your meals catered in, when you consider how much it costs in gas to go to the store, to come home and prepare the food, and the time it takes. It might be much more efficient and less expensive to have someone else do that stuff when you’re busy.

But if you’re just a chef at heart, or you can’t afford to have meals catered or to eat out often, then prepare the meals while your kids are in school, or at least the hard parts, and just take them out, ready to go when the family is ready to eat. If you’re a single parent, you might also consider hiring a babysitter when you’re doing something that needs complete concentration from you. It can be cooking or a big project for work. Just because you’re at home working doesn’t mean you can’t use a babysitter sometimes. Just think of all the ways you can help yourself, and you’re sure to come up with an ADD-friendly system that will work for you.

Still, when you feel like you want to burst, walk away, into another room for a while, until you can control your emotions. Don’t allow these situations to spin out of control. They’ll only serve to make you feel worse if you give into them.

Women who have ADD often struggle with substance abuse, too, but the worst part of it all is that they tend to hide their dependencies from other people. Sure, drugs, alcohol, food, and any other addiction are rationalized ways to “help” your condition. You feel that your self-medicating, but you’re just making yourself more miserable. If you have these issues, consult a professional immediately. Doctors and counselors can help you find ways to deal with ADD that won’t destroy your family and your self-esteem.

The worst thing you can do is to blame yourself for having ADD. It’s not your fault. You did nothing to inherit ADD. It just is. And maybe you’re lucky, right? I mean, you can think faster than most people on the planet. You’re able to do lots of things at once, and you’re probably very, very smart. Focus on those qualities and use ADD to its best advantages.

ADD is nothing to be depressed about. In fact, figure out what your strengths are and it can make you very happy. You’re probably highly intelligent and can do many things at once. You can hyperfocus on tasks that you really enjoy doing and come out with something far superior to the average Jane. Discover your personal pitfalls, and work on ADD-friendly systems to overcome them. You may need professional help to do that, and if you do… ask for it! That will be the first step on your road to making your life happier and in sending your self-esteem through the proverbial roof.

What are the effects if I have ADHD and take ecstasy?

I’ve done cocaine with my friends a few times instead of it making me feel this huge rush that my friends feel i feel so lazy and tired. When im on cocaine i just felt like i was taking my adderall medication all over again which is no fun because that pill always made me quiet and focused which i hated.

I’m considering trying ecstasy . Would my ADHD effect it in some way like the cocaine? Would it make me feel lazy or something instead of what ive heard like touching feels incredible. I would really like to know!

please no awnswers like dont do it i just want the facts please :]

I have never taken ecstasy but I have read that you are most likely trying to burn the part of your brain up that regulates and creates “happiness.” For your sake, I wish you could for a moment look into the future and calculate where your behavior will most likely take you. My odds are in jail without the ability to find even a good joke amusing because of the damage you are doing to your brain chemistry. Enjoy it now because the remainder of your life is going to suck!

I hope to God there is not some wife and child depending on you for a living.

Please tell someone who cares about you what you are doing and then let them help you.

Effects Of Adhd Drugs On Children – Some Facts And Figures

About 10% of all American children have been prescribed some sort of psychostimulant or psychotropic drugs for some type of attention disorder such as ADHD, ODD or CD. It has now reached epidemic proportions yet the effects of ADHD drugs on children has been minimized by the drug companies who make these drugs. Are you surprised? The fact that ADHD homeopathic cures have no side effects and that relatively few people know about this should not surprise us either, given the powerful influence Big Pharm has at its disposal.

All you have to do to get an idea of what is going on is to Google the FDA site where you will see under ADHD meds, a whole list of side effects and warnings. One of the most alarming effects of ADHD drugs on children involves cardiac arrest and the lowering of blood pressure. If there is even a hint of a heart problem, the child has to have an ECG and then be monitored for the whole time he is receiving treatment. A report done in the Netherlands on 250,000 patients published its findings and stated that there were ‘reasonably sure’ that the threefold increase in deaths from heart attacks was linked to the taking of psychostimulant drugs such as amphetamines. This study mostly concerned adults but when we think that we are giving the same drugs to children, then it is time to call a halt.

We now know from a University of Michigan report that there is a definite link between ADHD and drug use. The children with ADHD are just at higher risk all through their lifetime. There is a confidential FDA report which states that if amphetamines are taken for long period, then this may lead to drug dependency. Yet doctors are happily prescribing these amphetamines and minimizing the effects of ADHD drugs on children saying that they are limited and rare. As a parent, quite frankly, I am not prepared to take that risk.

Antidepressants are not allowed to be prescribed for children in the UK and this is not surprising given that the link between the use of antidepressants and suicidal thoughts was ‘convincing’. This is the word used by the FDA!

These then are just some of the effects of ADHD drugs on children and I think it is high time that more and more parents should be aware of the alternative natural cures for ADHD which will pose absolutely no risk for their children. Why not find out exactly what a homeopathic remedy is and how it can control ADHD symptoms without actually turning your child into a zombie.

Adhd Environmental Causes

adhd environmental causes

ADD/ADHD Sufferer Should Now Make the Right Choice in Treatment

With consumers becoming more aware of the dangers of prescription ADD/ADHD medications, and with researchers devoting more resources toward uncovering treatments that will help sufferers conquer ADD/ADHD, there’s no doubt that there really are other, more intelligent, choices available to those who have received an ADD/ADHD diagnosis.

Most sources admit that the exact cause of ADD/ADHD is unknown. In fact, there may be several factors that combine to produce a state in which the brain’s wiring misfires and causes the effected individual to display signs of hyperactivity, distractibility, and impulsivity. Interestingly, many of the factors that might cause ADD/ADHD are suspected to be environmental. This means that the cure for ADD/ADHD might just be to remove whatever exists within the environment that has caused the problem.

Sounds rather easy but is it really the case?

There’s no arguing that once ADD/ADHD has taken hold, conquering the disorder is difficult. Yet all signs point to the fact that it can be overcome! Real people have spent years doing what doctors and research scientists have failed to do, until recently; that is, to devote time, energy, and financial recourses to investigating non-prescription treatments for ADD/ADHD.

Remember saccharin? That harmless sweetener touted as a panacea for diabetics who could finally enjoy sweet treats? Saccharin was eventually discovered to be a factor in developing cancer and removed from the market only to be returned to the market because… well, not everyone who used it got cancer.

In much the same way, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) determines what is safe for consumers. But people have to place a lot of intelligent thought into what is best for them personally. The only way to make intelligent decisions is to educate oneself. For that reason, it’s important to understand that the FDA makes decisions in much the same way. When determining what is safe, the FDA considers how a product may be beneficial for the greatest number of people. A drug is considered safe if it helps more people than it harms. A new food additive is safe if its benefits outweigh the risks.

Our body naturally cannot accept chemical additives, sweeteners, or preservatives.

Nature made sure that everything that mankind needed to thrive was available to him. And, there’s nothing in nature’s pharmacy that even comes close to the chemicals that people pump into their bodies every day. Even the studies that are being performed on a daily basis indicate that processed sugar, food additives, chemical preservatives, natural light deficiency, and heavy metal toxicity (lead, mercury, and cadmium) may all be at least partially responsible for causing attention deficit disorder/ADHD.

Now that this is backed up by research, only common sense can help us make out what is the ultimate answer for this problem.

Below we will discuss some time-tested proven solutions.

Since ADD/ADHD is thought to be caused by imbalance in the body’s natural state, there can only be one proper way of rectifying that which is natural alternatives.

Chemical additives, nutritional deficiencies, and toxicity that have been causing the disorder should then be eliminated so that chemical balance of the body can return back to its normal ideal state.

It would be easy to decide what the proper treatments for ADD/ADHD sufferer when we know for a fact the problem is due to the lack of certain nutrients such as calcium, B vitamins, tryptophan, tyrosine, and magnesium; and too much of toxic substances such as lead, cadmium, mercury, processed sugar, food additives, and artificial chemicals.

It is only right then to treat high chemical contents in the body by eliminating them rather than inputting more that could evidently cause more harm than good.
