I have been told by a few different people that my son may have ADHD. Before I consider medication for him I would like to try changing his diet. I have heard that eliminating preservatives, food coloring, and processed foods can help. Does anyone have anymore information on this? Thank you!

I am a 26 year old male, I grew up with severe ADHD. I failed miserably in school due to my lack of interest which lead to lack of concentration or care. I have overly excelled in anything I enjoy and put my mind to, but in getting older, started to realize that there are things I have to put up with in order to succeed in life. You can’t always do what you want all the time. I changed my diet to a low sugar diet, as well as eating more meats, vegetables, and I take a natural omega3 pill every day. The omega3 has been a HUGE help in my overall attentiveness. what these changes have done for me, is to get me into a mode of paying attention to my surroundings, bringing me that habit of paying attention. I keep taking my morning omega3 pill as well as eating healthy, and I feel much more comfortable and successful in life. with NO DRUGS! Before your son can go through his life altering mental changes of his own, you can definitely help him by changing his diet.

Another thing, is that people tend to see an ADHD child and want to keep him AWAY from caffeine. people with ADHD react in the opposite way to these things, whereas caffeine to adhd is a downer and will usually calm you down a focusable state. I drink my morning and afternoon coffee every day.

Anyway, these are just some ways I have dealt with my ADHD, and I feel I have been quite successful with them. Be more visual, less verbal lecturing. If he has homework to do for school, always, and I mean ALWAYS give him a place to get away from it for a few minutes, whether it’s a puzzle book, legos, etc…. Give him that option of “if you feel overwhelmed with your homework, you can have 5 minutes of legos, or puzzles, but you have to get back to your homework”. Guarantee he will eventually finish his homework all the way through without stopping. sounds weird but I promise.

I just tried to put my son out and try to encourage non-stimulating. It was a rough month and a half at home and at school. I urged him to switch again. It is one of the new Vyvanse one or not. I'm not familiar with the drug you mentioned. But my daughter has ADHD and a year ago, I took her out and try. adderall strattera and she did not make it better. It was not just. But a terrible pain in her abdomen. It does not seem to help much. Problems with attention / focus in her. Concerta and now she's back on. adderall adderall stronger. But it really works best for her. Everyone is different, but my son seems to be. I like to respond to the stimulation of his will is not clear cut, as well as his sister. You can also get the flavored shakes like Boost, or dietary supplement shakes to drink with their meals so they get their vitamins and put the normal amount of weight on because with their hyper metabolisms and especially if they take meds, they can lose it or just not gain much. Be sure the soda is sugar free, but not caffeine free. The sugar will just speed them up, while caffeine works like a stimulant for their brains, like ritalin, dexadrine, or adderall does. I wouldn’t give them any kind of coffee though. Speeds up the heart rate too much. It takes 2 cans of soda to equal one cup of coffee.

What are some natural ways to treat ADHD?

I’ve been off concerta for 4 days now, and things have improved A LOT! My mood is better, I haven’t had any shortness of breath, I’ve been sleeping much easier. However, I have been extremely lazy and such. I’ve read tea is an excellent natural “drug.” What are other ways to combat it?

There have actually been a lot of studies that have shown that Fish Oil can help with ADD/ADHD. It seems too simple, and that may be one reason it wasn’t really looked at closely for this, but I wasn’t surprised it would help when I thought about it. The EPA and DHA in Fish Oil help with all sorts of things including heart health, skin health, and brain health. Give it a try… it’s economical, safe, and easy. The ADHD Diet

There has been increasing research with respect to the ADHD diet and other aspects of nutrition that may be involved in the successful treatment of Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

The nutritional management of ADHD is one aspect that has been relatively neglected to date, but food additives, refined sugars, food sensitivities or allergies, and fatty acid deficiencies have all been linked to ADHD.

There is increasing evidence that many children with behavioral problems are sensitive to one or more food components that can negatively impact their behavior.

We know that food has a tremendous impact on mood states. Consider the infamous “sugar crash” or how sluggish one feels soon after consuming a large, greasy meal.

Conversely, think about the alertness and energy one feels after eating healthy food.

As a result, diet modification is playing an increasingly important role in the management of ADHD and should be considered as part of the treatment protocol.

While there is no “cure” for ADHD, diet is being increasingly included in ADHD treatments along with the time-tested treatments of ADHD meds, the Total Focus Program for children and the Conquer ADD Program for adults.

The Elimination ADHD Diet

Elimination diets involve removing foods or ingredients that are suspected of contributing to ADHD symptoms.

A study conducted at the University of Eindhoven, Netherlands, for example, investigated the effect of an elimination diet on children ages 3-7 years old with a diagnosis of ADHD. The elimination diet in this case was based on the Few Foods Diet (rice, turkey, pear and lettuce).

According the results, 62% of the children showed an improvement in behavior according to the Conner’s Behavior list and ADHD Rating Scale. Their conclusion is that in young children with ADHD an elimination diet can lead to a statistically significant decrease in symptoms.

What To Eliminate

Eliminate dairy products. This is the most important restriction. Almond milk, rice milk, and soy milk are great alternatives to cow milk. (Remember: cow’s milk is for baby cows, not people.) Drink more water instead.

Eliminate yellow foods such as corn and squash. Bananas are ok.

Eliminate junk foods. If it comes in a cellophane wrapper, don’t eat it.

Eliminate fruit juice because it has high sugar content. Reduce sugar intake by as much as 90%. No chocolate, Nutrasweet, etc.

Eliminate processed meats. If the meat has chemicals listed that you can’t pronounce, don’t buy it.

Eliminate fried foods by as much as 90%.

Eliminate all food coloring, particularly red and yellow.

Remember, make the changes gradually one at a time. That way you can test whether the change helped or not.

As always, work with your doctor when attempting any ADHD diet.

ADHD Diet Supplements

A supplementation ADHD diet involves adding vitamins, minerals, or other nutrients to make up for deficiencies in one’s diet that may contribute to ADHD symptoms.

At the Pomeranian Medical Academy in Poland, the effects of magnesium supplements on hyperactivity in children diagnosed with ADHD was examined in order to test a hypothesis that a magnesium deficiency may be involved in the etiology in ADHD.

The study comprised 50 hyperactive children diagnosed with ADHD, aged 7-12 years, with a magnesium deficiency proven via blood samples.

The children were given 200 mg/day for six months. At the end of treatment, hyperactivity was assessed using the Conner’ss Rating Scale for Parents and Teachers, the Wender’s Scale of Behavior, and the Quotient of Development to Freedom from Distractibility.

The children given 6 months of magnesium supplementation exhibited a significant decrease of hyperactivity compared to the control group which had not been treated with magnesium.

ADHD Diet Examples

In general, a rule of thumb is that whatever is good for the brain is likely to be good for ADHD. World renowned brain researcher and ADHD expert Dr. Daniel Amen recommends these ADHD diet suggestions:

-Eat a high-protein diet that includes beans, cheese, eggs, meat, nuts, or protein supplements. They are thought to improve concentration and possibly increase the time ADHD medications work.

-Reduce simple carbohydrates such as candy, corn syrup, honey, sugar, products made from white flour, white rice, and potatoes without the skins.

-Eat more complex carbohydrates such as veggies, fruits (including oranges, tangerines, pears, grapefruit, apples, and kiwi). Eating complex carbs at night may aid sleep.

-Eat more Omega acids which are found in tuna, salmon, other cold-water white fish, walnuts, Brazil nuts, and olive and canola oil. Omega-3 fatty acids are also available in supplement form such flax seed oil and primrose oil.

ADHD in Children – Prescription Medications v. Natural Remedies

While there is, of course, a place for prescription medication in certain cases of ADHD, you must give careful consideration regarding possible side effects.  The use of any stimulant medications in  children under age 6 is not recommended.  So please ensure you discuss with your doctor the risks and benefits of giving these medications to your child.

It is strongly advised that all parents thoroughly research any suggested prescription drugs before commencing the treatment on their child.  Making sure that the following criteria are fully investigated: common uses, cautions, possible side effects, overdose, additional information, and major drug interactions.

In America, The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are still investigating the side effects of particular prescription ADHD drugs, and it is therefore advisable that parents do their own
research into these medications so that they are fully aware of the potential risks.

As research into the long-term effects of drugs prescribed for ADD is still in its early stages. Much more research is still required. Discuss with your doctor the risks and benefits of using their suggested medications on your child.

Physicians still have a very difficult time prescribing medications which they feel will produce beneficial results, so treatment is individualized and usually performed on a trial and error basis. techniques – such as creative teaching methods. It is imperative that you make sure that YOU are educated on all aspects of ADD/ADHD before making a decision on your child’s medication.

The best chances of minimizing any side effects, is to use a natural remedy that is totally free of side effects completely.  Whilst many doctors believe, or admit, these do exist.

Alternative treatments that are available and are currently being used for ADHD are:

how to motivate a 16 yr. old boy within the public school sytem?

has been evaluated as adhd of the attentive sort….did well in grammar school and from 6th grade on has gone down hill…I think he is more aspergers syndrom on the mild spectrum. I don’t medicate but have made dietary changes. He has failed all classes in 10th grade, but his computer (98-100). He won’t cooperate with counseling. Talking things away doesn’t work..no matter how long it’s taken away. We have been consistent and can’t inspire him. He won’t do the homework, school just thinks he’s lazy and insubordinate. I’m at a loss. I’ve put three older children through (girls) and they did well. I’m sad that I am failing him. I’m not putting him through any more eval’s so my opinion on the asperger’s is not part of documentation. Any constructive advice would be welcome.
He’s a good kid, but has bucked the system from day one. His social skills are weak and he lacks empathy for others. I don’t mind the repeating of grade just want him to do the work.

I think a lot of the problem may derive from the way you treat him. I don’t mean this in a bad way,it is just that you take him to a bunch of counseling and everything. This may make him feel stupid. Upon feeling stupid, he may decide that he is stupid and therefore does not try anymore. Support him in everything he does. Also, dont compare him to his sisters. When you compare children their self esteem may drop

PHOENIX: This whole thing with ADD, ADHD, if people and the parents and everyone were to come to understand that everything we put in our body obviously affects us physically, but to understand that it also affects us mentally and emotionally, our ability to concentrate, this whole ADD, ADHD, well no wonder most of these kids are bouncing off the walls and can’t focus. One, we have to remember what it was like to be a child, first of all. That to me is so important. That child has so much energy that should not be harnessed with a drug. If parents were to understand that everything that they put in their child’s diet, even though they probably think, I’m sure they think they’re doing right with the low fat milk and the cereals and all that, and the bagels. But all those foods are all very high GI. And the juices and things like that and of course, what kid doesn’t enjoy a Red Bull which is nothing but caffeine and sugar. All those things deplete that brain chemical which, among many things, will lead to more cravings, more binge eating and the so-called ADD, ADHD.

KEVIN: Yeah.

PHOENIX: So, just by understanding what a healthy diet will help tremendously in that child being able to focus and to lose the weight and to be a much healthier child without having to drug them with, you know, sort of Ritalin or Strattera.

KEVIN: Sure. And with kids, if we can move into that just for a little bit…

PHOENIX: A-ha.

KEVIN: …I mean, kids like chicken fingers and french fries and ketchup. I mean, how do you get them to, as a parent…

PHOENIX: Yeah.

KEVIN: …what does a parent do to get them to eat a healthier diet?

PHOENIX: Well, that’s another excellent question because I talk about it in the book saying, you know, I wrote the book in a dialogue form to one, to give a voice directly to the consumer. And so, the woman says to me, “Well, you can eat like that because you don’t have children. I have children.” And I wanted to put that out there, because I do understand that it is, when you have kids, that’s a whole another thing. I don’t have to worry about anyone, it’s just me. However, there is no better time to help your child than now and he is a child. They might not like it right away, but you can do it slowly. There are things that you can just start to incorporate. I mean, most kids like eggs. You can start instead of giving them breakfast cereal every morning.

KEVIN: A-ha.

PHOENIX: You know, Hot Pockets and Pop-Tarts and things like that. Slowly start to put other healthier things in there. And the dietary supplements as well, Kevin, that are crucial to be able to maintain that brain chemical so you can maintain on this healthy way of living and eating, is even though in our industry we have to … those standard claims, keep away from children. However, if I had a child, knowing how safe it is, I would have them on this product that they could then, because that is the most important thing for me, to maintain that brain chemical so I can get on with my life and do the things that I need to do and staying and eating healthy is the most important thing. So, that would be a good place to start to also then really educate yourself to know what’s healthy, start there and then also get on that supplement.

Because that’s the key. That’s the key. Again, all diets, generally ninety-eight percent of all diets fail unless you understand how to maintain that serotonin. And so that’s really the missing link for any of the diets that are out there.

KEVIN: Right. And you talked about supplements a little bit. What are some of the ingredients in a healthy supplement regimen?

PHOENIX: A-ha. Well, for me, I don’t really get too much into, my key focus, as I said, is to help maintain serotonin.

KEVIN: Yeah.

PHOENIX: I have my own personal thing. I mean, I’m not really big and overloading on supplements even though I’m in the industry. I could be taking twenty or thirty a day based on what the reports say that you need. I try to get as much as I can naturally through my food. I’ll take a good multiple vitamins and minerals ……

KEVIN: A-ha.

PHOENIX: I take an extra E and B. And other than that, the most important one for me, if I only had to take one, it would not be any of those, it would be the product that will elevate my serotonin. And the ones that I recommend in my book, I don’t promote my products in my book even though I spent four years developing supplements to prove these theories, that I had read, the clinical theories, it is about sharing those products and the supplements that people can go in any health food store and get. And by far, the one that is the favorite of mine and has the most wonderful studies to support and what I have used in all my products in the last seven years, is called 5HTP, 5 hydroxytryptophan.

KEVIN: OK. Tryptophans, OK.

PHOENIX: Yeah. And there’s other ones that I list but that is by far the best, and they could be picked up, as they say, it’s great. Because why? It’s safe, it’s affordable, it’s effective, extremely effective and no prescription required.

KEVIN: Wow. That’s interesting. And what does it do chemically?

PHOENIX: And unlike any diet that anyone’s been on in the past, Kevin, I always say, you know, “What do we think about it especially women when we’re on a diet?” We think about all the foods we can’t wait to eat once we get down to that perfect size.

KEVIN: Yeah, it’s true.

PHOENIX: And so, and plus, diets are associated with starvation, deprivation and frustration. And eventually, we end up with our head in the bag for whatever it is we crave. Because, not knowing that what’s driving us to consume those things is this brain chemical depleted. So, unlike any diet that anyone’s been on, whether you’re trying to lose weight, whether you want to help alleviate depression or ADD or help lower your risk for heart disease, cancer, all those things, it is absolutely imperative to be able to maintain it. And to maintain it with a safe effective dietary supplement, Kevin. Once you’re able to maintain that brain chemical, the most amazing thing happens and that is, you will no longer be driven to consume those things. You could have those foods, those trigger items, those comfort foods that you thought you couldn’t live without, you could have them right in front of you and you would no longer want them. Why? Because the brain is now satiated. It’s content. It has no need, no desire to push you for those things. And that is what makes this work long-term. Because what happens when you maintain the serotonin, you subsequently stabilize the insulin. This is about coming to understand the long-term solution, and to how far you want to take it, if you add in working out, doing some weight training to help build that lean muscle mass, you could take it probably a little quicker but it is, for me, always about long-term.” But anyway, that woman with a huge…she was a binge eater for her whole life. She was about my age, forty-seven at the time. And she just could not control it. She said, “I felt like such a failure.” Having lost the forty-five pounds, she had kept it off for a year, which is a huge success, because sometimes, like people say, “Oh, I can lose the weight. It’s keeping it off that’s an issue.” So, most of the people that I have now, the book has been out a year, these people have maintained that. And she says now, she says, “You know Phoenix, it is so wonderful to finally be able to go out to dinner with my two boys, enjoy a meal, have a nice piece of pie without wanting to eat the entire pie.”

Diet For Attention Deficit Disorder – Five Simple Strategies

Are you at risk of becoming insane because of your ADHD child? Apart from the question of ADHD meds, you know that the old adage ‘you are what you eat’ is true but how on earth do you find the time to put it into practice. Here are five simple strategies which can change your child’s diet for attention deficit disorder (ADHD) without going crazy in the process.

1. Forget Feingold diet and other elimination diets. There are too many restrictions in the first and there is too much difficulty in the second! Feingold does not allow fruit which I and lots of nutritionists disagree with, so the first strategy is to pile up on fruits and vegetables in whatever form you like. Smoothies, soups, and whatever!

2. Get rid of all the processed food which is full of additives, colourings and pesticides and all sorts of toxins. There is enough evidence out there, believe me, which says that this rubbish ruins concentration and hypes up kids so that they are hyperactive. That means going organic when you can but without making it a big deal. Most diets for attention deficit disorder make a big deal of this and say you have to bake your own bread!

3. Either buy and serve lots of fish and serve it up. If you cannot buy fish, or you hate the smell, then buy a good Omega 3 and Omega 6 supplement or fish oil supplement. These are also called essential fatty acids (EFAs) and they are just great for brain function. A daily dose of 400 mg is enough. Flax oil comes into this category and without making a big fuss, just put it into the smoothies you prepare for the kids. If you do like fish and the kids do as well, it is better to avoid the fish which have high levels of mercury. These are swordfish, shark, and mackerel.

4. Reduce the level of glucose and try and increase protein. The child’s brain needs a steady supply of glucose throughout the day. In practical terms, that means having smaller regular meals throughout the day and favouring protein snacks with nuts and whole grains over the carbohydrates, ice cream and chocolate snacks. Discover your health food shops and buy snacks with nuts and other goodies there.

5. Get a good source of multivitamins – this will cover all the things you haven’t fed the whole family with. I go for one which contains Gingko Biloba as well because I know that research on that one says that it really helps the brain .

Finally get the whole family in on this diet for attention deficit disorder – there are no great changes so if you introduce these gradually over time, nobody will notice.Well, you will notice because your ADHD child will be calmer and even lovable again! A diet for attention deficit disorder is not going to cure your child but it really does help and everybody in the family will be healthier as well.

The other thing which probably keeps you awake at night is what sort of ADHD medication you should go for. The side effects of the ADHD psychostimulants are often so severe ( weight loss, irritability, anxiety, listlessness etc) that your child has to take other medications to combat these side effects. Could someone please share their experiences with leaky gut?

I have been on an elimination diet for about a month and a half now in hopes of curing Leaky Gut and Adrenal fatigue, and I do not feel any different at all. I suffer from profound depression, ADHD, insomnia and chronic sinusitis among other things. I’ve heard that most people feel better right away and I’m starting to lose hope. I have been dealing with this my whole life so I’m naturally, very sceptical about the whole thing. Any miraculous recovery stories?

The effect of Diet in the Treatment of ADHD

Often dismissed as ineffective or simply through not knowing where to start with such a daunting task as changing the dietary habits of a lifetime, not just for the ADHD child, but for the whole family is often why most parents will dismiss this powerfully effective approach as out of hand. However research comes back time and time again to the fact that behavioural symptoms are improved when changes to the diet are implemented and monitored over a period of time. This is one of the most drastic and effective changes that anyone can make with their ADHD child. Many times I have come across parents who say they have adopted this approach and it hasn’t made any difference. In fact what they have failed to do is to identify the culprit food or additive that can trigger the behaviour with their child.

It can be very difficult to find what foods can be causing the symptoms before you can eliminate them! It can not only be one type of food that is causing these symptoms but may even be a combination of 2 or more. Also it is not just the child concerned – it has to be a whole family issue because changing diet is a lifestyle change for the family group as a whole. But… the good news is that everyone can feel better when they improve their diet no matter where they are coming from !

Be aware that anybody can have a sensitivity to certain foods – which is another way of saying they react to a food they eat. The scale can be more severe with an intolerance to a certain trigger where the symptoms worsen or even progress to a full blown allergy. Now these symptoms can make their presence felt in physical ways like headaches, rashes etc or it can be by affecting the balance of our internal chemistry and this will reflect in behaviour which is a barometer for the way we feel and think and if the reaction is severe enough that can be very drastic indeed. With ADHD, and let’s be very clear that no-one really understands for certain what causes this, diet can often be a root cause. As mentioned earlier it can be anything to blame even a natural food like a tomato can be the problem but very often it is additives like Aspartame which is a n artificial sweetener, or sodium benzoate which is a preservative or MSG which is a flavour enhancer. New studies have highlighted the increased amount of insecticides and other chemicals in the bodies of children with ADHD. However what is interesting in this research is that the amount of organophosphates used in spraying food has decreased in the last 10 years whereas the incidence of diagnosis of ADHD has increased, So there is something more than this going on here really.

People are more susceptible to our chemical environment. It may well be that there is an increase in misdiagnosis followed by the ease and willingness to overprescribe conventional medication to treat symptoms which are not addressing the cause and which can make the problem of challenging behaviour even harder to deal with.

Additives like aspartame are known to cause genetic damage. ADHD may well be genetic, as the symptoms often run in family groups. However, we do know that when DNA which is the coded information in the genes is damaged then it can be carried forward to the next generation of cells or children as misinformation within the cells. We also now know that genes are switched on – by environmental triggers – so something in the environment has to send the message to the incomplete data banks of information within the cell in order to get the wrong reaction as it were, to the stimulus. Latest understanding into the way genetics work shows us that that damage many not be irreparable and we are not all victims to the genetic fate of our parents ‘that other outcomes are possible by addressing the patterns that wrong messages have created in the past with previous generations of cells. A natural way of doing this without any side effects is through the simple approaches of Dr Albert Abrams over 100 years ago. One aspect of the work he pioneered in the field of radionics is known as the amino codes. He was hounded in his time for teaching that everything was connected by a universal field of energy. Daily monitoring of the dietary situation should include a simple muscle test to find out the basis of sensitivity to additives, monitoring food and mood with a food diary, eliminating the suspect foods ( which can include wheat, dairy and sugar by the way) and then reinstating them one at a time and gradually after a period of abstinence will usually confirm the situation. Feingold diet is a very helpful way of working with this technique. Supplements are really helpful, as they start to address the deficiency over many years. Especially a good quality vitamin and mineral supplement, a good synergistic vegetable based protein supplement and flax seed oil as a good source of essential fatty acids and a good anti oxidant to clear up the toxic residues! Washing fruit and vegetables thoroughly and buying organic when possible is also making a big difference in treating ADHD symptoms with diet.

How has Ritalin or other meds affected your ADHD child?

The teachers are pushing me to get my son diagnosed and medicated again and i’m not having any of it. Just wanted some insight as to how the medications affected the child, good, bad, anything. thanks!

Medication is a tool however since it does have side effects and can cover up real problems it should be used after other nondrug treatments such as therapy, behavior modification, and even parenting classes. Check for the things below first before chosing meds. Also….teachers are not qualified to diagnose ADHD. Knowing that they brought up ADHD without checking for the below things proves that.

Causes of Hyperactivity, impulsivity, and lack of attention span

For those who are searching for reasons behind their kid’s behavior, here are some possibilities. Many parents, because of not knowing, settle for ADHD as a diagnosis before looking at everything. ADHD is diagnosed by mental health professionals who form their opinion by observing your child’s behavior nothing more. There are no brain scans, blood tests, or anything else definite that is used during diagnosis. The problem with that is there are many other problems that have the same symptoms of ADHD. For example, any problem dealing with the fuels of the body: water, food, blood and air can cause behavior problems. Water, food, blood and air to the body is just like gas and oil to a car. If you put bad gas or have old or the wrong oil in your car, it will act up just like a child acts up when eating foods they are allergic to, drinking or breathing contaminated water or air or having blood disorders. There are also many medical, biological, emotional and mental conditions that mimic ADHD also. I’ll provide examples in more detail in the listing that follows. Only settle for the diagnosis of ADHD after checking out all of these problems and many more.

1.(!) Hypoglycemia (Low Blood sugar) Low blood sugar can stem from thyroid disorders, liver or pancreatic problems, or adrenal gland abnormalities, or even an insufficient diet. Hypoglycemia can display the same ADHD like sypmtoms.

2.(!) Allergies: 15 to 20 percent of the world has some type of allergy. A person can be allergic to nearly anything so check for all forms. Food is one of the primary causes of allergic reactions. Just like the Car and human analogy stated above. If a child eats food they are allergic to, the body will not run properly and that may affect behavior. Everyone has different sensitivities to allergens so just because you aren’t affected does not mean your child won’t be also. (Some examples, Allergic reactions to food dye, milk, chocolate, and grains, ect)

3.(!) Learning disabilities: If the primary place of behavior problems is at school, learning disabilities may be the cause of ill behavior. One of the main things that affects a child’s self-esteem is how well they do in school. If a child has an undiagnosed learning disorder that makes school much harder and sometimes impossible. Children with undiagnosed learning disabilities are labeled as lazy, stupid, and many other downgrading opinions which affects self-esteem. And many times when a child’s self-esteem is at jeopardy they try to make up for it in other sometimes nonproductive ways such as acting out, bullying, or becoming the class clown.

4.(!) Hyper or hypothyroidism: An imbalance in metabolism that occurs from an overproduction or underproduction of thyroid hormones. This imbalance may cause a variety of behaviors and may affect all body functions.

5.(***) Dietary Factors: (For example to much caffeine and sugar) At doses as low as 250 milligrams a day, a level many American children exceed- caffeine can cause rambling speech, attention and concentration problems, agitation, heart palpitations, insomnia, and hyperactive behavior. In a way, it is true we are what we eat.

6.(Rare) Early stage brain tumors – Found rarely in children but should still be considered. Statistically, this diagnoses may not be important – but to individual families, they assuredly are.

7.(*)Toxin exposures- Children are more vulnerable to toxins than adults. Such as pesticide-poisoning (Eating vegetables and fruit not washed thoroughly, they can be exposed to them by playing outside on the ground), also by gasoline fumes, and herbicides. Inside there are also many toxins. Disinfectants, furniture polishes and air fresheners are toxins that can affect some children’s behaviors. Beds and carpets are one of the most dangerous places in the house because they are full of different types of dust, and other toxins. Toxins can cause hyperactivity, attention deficits, irritability, and learning problems.

8.(**) Early-onset diabetes is another problem that displays some of the same symptoms of ADHD – symptoms include aggression, depression, and anxiety. If you have a family history of diabetes checking for this is a must.

9.(**) Heart disease is another. It affects blood and oxygen flow to the brain affecting brain function that in-turn affects behavior.

10. (***) Worms – Such as Pinworms. They lay their eggs in the anal area, causing tickling and itching, which are most bothersome at night. The lack of sleep from this type of infestation can cause crankiness or bad behavior during the day. When asleep, nightmares may be present. This problem is mostly found in very young children preschool to kindergarten because of primitive toileting skills, they tend to put their fingers in their mouths, and they participate in a lot of hands-on activities with other kids and with pets. Roundworms, hookworms, and tapeworms are other examples that can make a child display ADHD like symptoms. Worms cause hyperactive behavior, learning problems, depression, or attention deficits by making children miserable on the inside.

11.(***) Viral or bacterial infections: When a child is affected by an infection that might cause problem behavior.

12.(***) Malnutrition or improper diet – Many children in the United States do not eat a well balanced diet. A proper diet is necessary to growing children. An improper diet can affect a child’s behavior in an ill way.

13.(***) Head injuries – Such as the postconcussion syndrome. Some of the symptoms include Irritability, emotionality, memory problems, depression, and sleep disturbances. A concussion can disrupt brain functioning causing ADHD like symptoms.

14.(*) Spinal Problems- Some spinal problems can cause ADHD like symptoms because if the spine is not connected to the brain properly nerves from the spinal cord can give the brain all of signals at once making a child rambunctious and always on the go.

15.(*) Carbon Monoxide poisoning – Thousands of children each year are exposed to toxic levels of this gas each year. Sources include gas heaters, and other gas appliances such as fireplaces, dryers, and water heaters.

16.(***) Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) or Fetal alcohol effects (FAE) – FAS is a name that doctors use to describe the damage done to children’s brains and bodies when their mother drink heavily during pregnancy. It is the leading form of mental retardation today. Prenatal alcohol impairment, however, also comes in a milder form called fetal alcohol effects (FAE). Children with FAE often don’t look disabled, and they tend to score in the low-normal or even normal range of intelligence. But these kids arent normal. Their mal-developed brains cause them to exhibit a wide range of behavior problems, including hyperactivity, attention problems, learning disorders, and ethical problems such as stealing, lying, and cheating.

17.(**) Cardiac conditions – It can reduce the supply of blood, oxygen and nutrients to the brain. Defective blood vessels between organs to the brain.

18. (!) Mild to high lead levels, even in the absence of clinical lead poisoning: Research shows that children with even mildly elevated lead levels suffer from reduced IQs, attention deficits, and poor school performance. Lead is the leading culprit in toxin-caused hyperactivity.

19.(*) High mercury levels – One of the most interesting things I found regarding high mercury levels relates to dental fillings. Children who have mercury amalgam fillings in their mouth and grind their teeth are at risk of high mercury levels. American dental associations are defensive on the subject of mercury fillings but many European countries have discontinued the use of them because of side effects. There are also other causes of high mercury levels.

20.(*) High manganese levels

21.(*) Iron deficiency: Iron is an essential component of hemoglobin, the oxygen carrying pigment in the blood. Iron is normally obtained through the food in the diet and by the recycling of iron from old red blood cells. The causes of iron deficiency are too little iron in the diet, poor absorption of iron by the body, and loss of blood. It is also caused by lead poisoning in children.

22.(*) B vitamin deficiencies: Many experts believe that one of the main causes for inattention, hyperactivity, impulsivity, temper tantrums, sleep disorders, forgetfulness, and aggression are caused by faulty neurotransmissions – a problem with the neurotransmitters in the brain. Vitamin B-6 is a necessary vitamin used in the making of neurotransmitters that affect behavior. A lack of this vitamin or really any other vitamin can cause a child to act inappropriately.

23.(*) Excessive amounts of Vitamins: Excessive amounts of vitamins can be toxic to the body and may cause the same ADHD like symptoms. It is possible to overdose when taking vitamins so make sure you contact a physician and check for vitamin deficiencies before taking extra vitamins.

24.(*) Tourette’s syndrome: Tourette’s syndrome is a rare but disruptive condition. It involves multiple tics (small, repetitive muscle movements), usually facial tics with grimacing and blinking. Tics may also occur in the shoulders and arms. This is usually accompanied by loud vocalizations, which may include grunts or noises, or uncontrollable (compulsive) use of obscenities or short phrases. The tics are worse during emotional stress and are absent during sleep. The cause is unknown. It occurs most often in boys, and may begin around age 7 or 8 or not until the child is in his or her late teens or early twenties. It may, at times, run in families. This disorder can be mistaken for not being able to sit still or impulsive behavior.

25.(Rare) Temporal lobe seizures: The Temporal lobe is a part of the brain. Any brain malfunction can cause inappropriate behavior. That’s why conducting brain scans is a must when trying to figure out behavior problems.

26. (***) Some drugs, both prescription and illegal can cause the brain to atrophy, leading to disturbed cognition and behavior. If your child routinely takes prescription or over-the-counter medications for asthma, hay fever, allergies, headaches, or any other condition, consider the possibility that the drugs are causing or contributing to behavior problems.

27. (Rare) Brain cysts – Another rare cause of hyperactivity but should still be considered when searching for the reasons behind displayed ADHD like behavior.

28.(*) Seizure disorders – The most overlooked is the absence Seizures. During an absence seizure, the brain’s normal activity shuts down. The child stares blankly, sometimes rotates his eyes upward, and occasionally blinks or jerks repetitively, he drops objects from his hand, and there may be some mild involuntary movements known as automatisms. The attack lasts for a few seconds and then it is over as rapidly as it begins. If these attacks occur dozens of times each day, they can interfere with a child’s school performance and be confused by parents and teachers with daydreaming.

29.(*) Metabolic disorders – They reduce the brain’s supply of glucose, the bodies fuel and can cause ADHD like symptoms.

30.(*) Genetic defects – Some mild forms of genetic disorders can go unnoticed in children and display some of the same symptoms of ADHD. Mild forms of Turner’s syndrome, sickle-cell anemia, and Fragile X syndrome are some examples. Almost any genetic disorder can cause hyperactivity or other behavior problems, even if the disorder isn’t normally linked to such problems. Many genetic diseases disrupt brain functions directly, through a variety of paths. A simple blood test can rule out genetic disorders. I’ll list a couple more with more detail in this list.

31. (***) Intentionally or unintentionally sniffing materials such as modeling glue or other house hold products

32. (***) Some disorders such as anemias reduce oxygen to the brain causing disturbance in the brains chemistry causing ADHD like symptoms.

33. (*) Sleeping disorders or other problems causing fatigue and crankiness during the day.

34. (*) Post-traumatic subclinical seizure disorder- It causes episodic temper explosions. These fits of temper come out of the blue for no reason. Some of these seizures can be too subtle to detect without a twenty-four-hour electroencephalogram (EEG).

35. (Rare) Porphyria – a hereditary enzyme-deficiency disease. Enzymes are very important to our body’s chemical reactions. Really nothing occurs in our body without enzymes. A lack of enzymes causes body malfunctioning which can cause ill behavior.

36. (Rare) Candida Albicans infestation (Yeast Infection) – Candida infestations cause hyperactivity in children. Most children who do suffer from Candida infestations have some underlying problem – frequently an immune disorder, or a disorder affecting carbohydrate metabolism and thus altering blood sugar levels. So immune disorders can cause other problems that also have the same symptoms of ADHD.

37. (Rare) Intestinal parasites – Parasites rob the body of needed nutrients which in-turn affects behavior.

38. (***) A beta-hemolytic streptococcus, better known as “strep.” – Although these bacteria are most commonly thought of as the cause of strep throat. Left untreated, strep can cause rheumatic fever and a movement disorder called Sydenham’s chorea. Moreover, recurrent infections can lead, in susceptible children, to a group of symptoms collectively known as PANDAS (Pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorders) Some symptoms of PANDAS include obsessive-compulsive behavior, Tourette’s syndrome, hyperactivity, cognitive problems, and fidgeting.

39.(!) Hearing and vision problems: If a child cant see or hear properly, school and daily things in life are nearly impossible and it may cause ADHD like symptoms especially in educational settings.

40.(***) Lack of exercise: “Hyper Couch Potatoes” are children who aren’t moving enough. Some children because of lack of exercise may seem as though they are always in motion, but often that motion is in fits and spurts: leaping up from a chair, spinning around in the lunch line, bouncing in a chair while watching TV. Quite a few hyperactive children actually do not get enough sustained, strenuous exercise to stay healthy mentally and physically. Exercise can make people happier, less anxious, less hyperactive, and less depressed. One reason is that exercise increases serotonin levels in the brain – exactly what Prozac, Elavil, and similar drugs do.

41.(***) Gifted Children: Gifted children often display ADHD like symptoms because most of the time they are bored with what other kids their age are doing. Behaviors associated with Giftedness are poor attention, boredom, daydreaming, low tolerance for persistence on tasks that seem irrelevant, their judgment often lags behind their development of intellect, their intensity may lead to power struggles with authorities, and they may have a high activity level. They may need less sleep compared to other children, and they may question rules, customs, and traditions. If your child scores above average on IQ tests, aces exams, has no trouble with homework, has no apparent learning disabilities, and primarily exhibits his or her problems mostly at school, maybe seeking a more challenging class or school would help.

42. (***) Emotional problems: Kids who are experiencing emotional problems most often display ADHD like symptoms. For example, kids who are constantly subjected to bullying at school can display ADHD like symptoms. These are normal kids that act out because they are scared. They experience sleeping problems, sadness, and they develop physical symptoms, especially if they think those symptoms will keep them home from school. Often they can’t concentrate in class, partly because they are worried and partly because they are suffering from sleep deprivation. Really any emotional problem at school or home in which a child is having trouble coping with can result in ADHD like symptoms.

43.(***) Some kids are just spoiled and undisciplined – A number of children labeled hyperactive are merely under-disciplined children who need a firmer hand. They are the ones that run their household and get away with anything. Dr Syndey Walker stated this problem best of why parents under-discipline their children. 44.(*) Sensory Integration Dysfunction- Sensory Integration Dysfunction is the inefficient neurological processing of information received through the senses, causing problems with learning, development, and behavior. These children are over-sensitive or under-sensitive dealing in touch, taste, smell, sound, or sight. For example, some of these children crave fast and spinning movement, such as swinging, rocking, twirling, and riding the merry-go-round- without getting dizzy. These children may move constantly, fidget, enjoy getting into upside down positions and be a daredevil. These children may become overexcited when there is too much to look at – words, toys, or other children. They may cover their eyes, have poor eye contact, be inattentive when drawing or doing desk work, or overreact to bright light. These children often act out in an attempt to cope with their inability to process sensory information such as acting out in crowded or loud places.

45. (***) Spirited children – When dealing with spirited children the problem usually does not lie with the child but with society’s perception of what normal childhood behavior is. Many normal children, according to some people, display ADHD like symptoms not because they are hyperactive or lack sufficient attention spans but because the person forming the opinion has unrealistic standards of how a child should behave.

46.(***) CAPD (Central Auditory processing Disorder)- will sometimes occur in children who have had a history of ear infections and/or PE tubes. Symptoms include distractibility, inability to follow a set of verbal instructions, “space out”, etc.

47. (**) Early-Onset Bi-Polar disorder: Also know as child-like Bi-polar. The experts state that 85% of children with child-like Bi-polar also meet the criteria for ADHD. The symptoms are extremely close. Most people when they think of Bi-polar disorder, think of Adult like Bipolar which mood swings happen over a some what long period of time. In child-like Bipolar, the mood swings can happen many times within a twenty four hour day, known as rapid cycling. At one moment they’re calm and the next minute they could be in a full fledge temper tantrum. Some of the symptoms are Distractibility, Hyperactivity, impulsivity, separation anxiety, restlessness, depressed mood, low self esteem, and many more. Early-Onset Bi-polar should be ruled out before ADHD is considered mainly because they are treated with different medications – if you choose medications that is. ADHD is treated with stimulant medications which will make a Bipolar child worse possibly psychotic.

48. (Rare) Klinefelter syndrom: A Genetic disorder in which a male has an extra X chromosome (XXY). Many individuals experience learning, behavior, and social problems. A degree of subnormal intelligence appears in some affected individuals. Many affected individuals are skinny and taller than most of their peers. A simple blood test can rule this disorder out.

49.(Rare) Genetic Disorder XYY- The extra Y chromosome has been associated with antisocial behavior.

50.(***) Lack of understanding and communication skills: One of the main reasons why a child acts out and throws temper tantrums when they have a problem is because of their lack of understanding of a problem and lack of expressing how they feel. Children do not have the vocabulary or know how to express their emotions like adults do, that’s why many act out when they are in a difficult situation. They are not able to tell you something is wrong so they show you instead. This is one reason why any emotional or medical problem can cause acting out behavior in children.

I used to say that the REAL wording behind the acronym for ADD was “Adults Don’t Discipline.” And with that as my mindset, my oldest child suffered miserably. I verbally beat him into submission — he didn’t REALLY submit, rather he just gave up. We’d been warned of the severe side effects of drugs being prescribed and opted to pull him from public schools and begin various regimens of diets. My wife and I are both well educated and thought ourselves up to the task of home school. He fell behind several grade levels and finally quit at the nineth grade. We put him on Strattera and put him to work. He went through jobs like most people go through underwear. At nineteen, he took himself off the medication and is currently enrolled in Job Corps.
Our youngest son, we held off slightly — not wanting to jump the gun. School went from being his favorite passtime to being something he absolutely hated and dreaded. So, with the mindset of not witholding medication for a diabetic, we had him tested and medicated. He’s in the fourth grade now. He’s in the advanced math program, working three grade levels above his fellow class mates and is reading four grade levels above the others. Still, he is teased mercilessly and there is a definite difference in his behavior when he misses his dosage. But clearly, it was and is the right thing for us to do. I now look back at My oldest son’s life, my life (and that of my father’s) and wonder how things might have been different. My IQ is just below genius and yet, I’ve always been the geek and underacheiver. My father never graduated from high school. Instead was given a certificate of attendence. He taught himself to read when he was in his forties.

My son has Adhd, and has just been diagnosew with Asperger Syndrom, has anyone tried the gluten free diet?

I am reading all about this gluten free diet, and find it odd. Can anyone explain the scientific reasoning behind it?

Because Asperger’s Syndrome is a high functioning form of autism, see sections 12, 21, and 22 – 25, in my website, (I’m an Aspie) at http://www.ezy-build.net.nz/~shaneris and adopt the recommended dietary changes, as well as finding a treatment program, where he can learn the interpretive, and social skills, which will facilitate his transitition into the mainstream, or as near as possible. I believe gluten has a form of allergic reaction with the lining of the digestive system, and it is also associated with Irritable Bowel Syndrome, but you would do better by using Google, Wikipedia, and your search engine on this, and/or re-posting this question in another section, such as medicine.

My mother suggested I take him off meds and watch what he eats. He likes his candy and sweets I will tell you that. So i am sure that has a lot to do with it. There have actually been a lot of studies that have shown that Fish Oil can help with ADD/ADHD. It seems too simple, and that may be one reason it wasn’t really looked at closely for this, but I wasn’t surprised it would help when I thought about it. Today, one of the major diseases that children and youth suffer from is the disease called Attention Deficit Disorder or ADD. There is no scientific evidence to suggest that you should avoid certain food or drinks with bipolar disorder or ADHD. People will suggest that you avoid artificial colourings and flavourings, particularly the E100 numbers which you’ll see on the back of most brightly coloured or strongy flavoured foods, and certainly as a general matter of health everyone should be avoiding these. A very small proportion of children with ADHD seem to have a response to cutting these out of the diet in terms of their symptoms improving, but again there is little scientific evidence to back this up.

Just eat a normal, healthy diet, and try to get plenty of omega 3 because it reportedly helps with all mental health problems.

Why Feed All People Milk?

The milk nowadays is not good for anyone! They process it and homogenize someway. It will turn your kids into giants and fat people! Thats why there are tons of overweight, very tall, big feet, big hands, and other things; that our young children have in the U.S. Only thing milk should be used for is building muscle and thats it! It shouldn’t be used by the boatloads to feed hundreds of thousands of schools and people! You can get all your necessary vitamins by something else, and not just by milk, milk, milk! Even when building muscle; it should be used discreetly, because it can make you bulky! Bulk doesn’t add strength; are we getting anywhere? Whey protein should be used with a little milk just for the right taste, thats it! I could of lived off of water and apple juice in middle school, because I knew of many students, who would refuse to drink the milk at all in schools, for one reason or another! But I drank milk in middle school, and now I have a 14 size shoe.

I think fast food is more to blame than milk for obesity.

Food diary is another method that can be used to detect food allergies. This method is done by recording all foods, beverages, snacks, candies, etc. that are consumed. This is also extended to inoffensive substances as gum, medications (even over the counter meds), and candies. Don’t forget to record down breathing, and general health in the diary as well as sleeping patterns, activity levels, and attitude. Patterns should be detectable according to what was ingested at the end of the month.

Elimination diets and food diaries are now being used to uncover toxins that may be responsible for such conditions as Autism, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, general food allergies, Fibromyalgia, inflammatory bowel disease, and even depression!

and the medicine you take doesn’t last that long. And when you start to come off of it you tend to drop from the “high” of concentration”. And while you are on it, you feel very anxious… There are the extended release capsules, but let’s say your insurance doesn’t cover it.

My son has ADD and I was just yesterday in the pharmacy. I got for my son now globules. She said I have to look for a lot of magnesium and zinc in food. I tried fish oil oral capsul, but he didn´t want to take them.

There are many articles – unfortunately in German – where the doc´s say, that they have found out people with ADD / ADHD have a great lack of unsaturated hydrocarbons, magnesium and zinc in their food. ( When I look back what we eat, all of us have a lack of them ).

I found out when my son is eating to many bought cakes and candies it´s getting worse. They sure have artifical colours and preservatives. When you go and buy yourself the list where they´ll explain what is what, you´ll see that many of those colours and preservatives are in suspicion to make children nervous.

So I bake the cakes. I can´t keep him away from every candie or limonade, but I hope that he will understand one day that he shouldn´t eat those things.
