adhd evaluation for adults

How fast does Adderall wear off?

My psychiatrist just prescribed Adderall at a low dosage (10mg) to help with me with focus and severe lack of motivation in my everyday life. (For background info, I have had an adult ADD/ADHD evaluation, which was non-conclusive, and I’ve also seen a sleep specialist to address daytime fatigue due to frequent night awakenings, for which I take another medication.) I’ve been on Adderall for only a few days.

I was wondering among those who have taken it for short or long periods, about how long does the affect last? Does it last all day, or only 8 hours, or 6 hours, etc? I have noticed that it’s MUCH different from caffeine, from which I’ll feel adrenaline-pumping hyper for a few hours, then get fuzzy. Adderall seems to help me merely feel awake… which is an amazing feeling when you’re used to walking around in a fog most of the time.

There are two types. XR, and IR — Extended Release, and Instant Release. I will assume you are referring to the Instant Release.

In this case you would have an overall noticeable therapeutic effect for roughly 6 hours, though can be perceived to last longer in those with little to no tolerance, or high sensitivity to amphetamines.

No, instant release is not designed to last all day,.. though it is often prescribed to be used once daily despite this fact.

You will become tolerant to the effects in time,.. the longer you take it, like most other medications, the body will adapt and the duration may decrease. The perceived effectiveness is likely to lessen, though this might take quite some time. It has a high risk profile, meaning that abuse potential and/or dependency is likely over a long enough period of time. Though if it is a medication you need to function and improve your quality of life, then there is nothing wrong with this. It is just the nature of medicine in general, and these things have to be dealt with in ongoing consultations with your doctor over the ‘years’ so to speak.

Adderrall is nothing like Caffeine — It is like comparing apples and oranges to be honest.

Caffeine works as an Adenosine Antagonist (which plays a role in neural blood flow, CNS stimulation, etc) — Due to this mechanism of action the method in which is works and the results are substantially different than Adderall…

Adderall is an amphetamine — Which works on the dopamine and nor-epinephrine in the brain. These two chemicals produce a much stronger stimulant, cognitive clarity, and CNS both sympathetic and parasympathetic response.

In other words, the Adderall works in a completely different way … think of it like a key that goes into different locks in your brain to unlock the effects. These effects produce what you have already experienced subjectively, and usually creates a greater stimulation of the CNS.

You report that you don’t feel much more than the desired effects from this amphetamine — which is great. Although it has a greater “body-load” than caffeine.. even though caffeine feels , for you, more distressing on your body.

For example, if you were to take your heart rate after about 2-3 hours of taking the Adderall it would be elevated and your blood pressure would likely have increased to some degree. Though, if you are otherwise healthy.. the level of this increase is well within tolerable limits at proper, therapeutic, doses.

Keep in mind, none of this information is to discourage your use, or to cause concern. It is a useful medication.. and continue taking it as prescribed by your doctor — I am merely pointing out the differences in your perceived effect.

Just for completeness — The “Extended Release” is designed to last for about 12-14 hours. Though again this is subjective (In some people it will last for less, and other longer.) Also there is a definite ‘curve’ in Adderall’s potency after ingestion. It will slowly and steadily increase until it peaks after roughly 3 hours and then start tapering off the other way (in the IR).

So it should feel the most ‘energizing’ about halfway through the perceived effects.

Glad it is helping your situation,

Adhd Rating Scale 4

adhd rating scale 4

adhd rating scale 4

How would u rate the following 15 drugs?

on a scale from 1-10 (1-least dangerous; 10-most hard core)

weed
coke
crack
acid
x
heroin
angel dust
speed
meth
ludes
mescaline
shrooms
roofies
DMT
GHB

In order to quantify the danger of a given drug it is necessary to give a context. Drugs are only as hardcore as their users. Take meth for example, a notoriously ‘dangerous’ drug, which is tactually administered safely in a medical setting as a treatment for ADHD (brand name Desoxyn).

That said, based on the trends of their users, I made some generalizations and compared their various qualities. You’ll notice that all drugs have their different risks. It’s up to the user to recognize them and take the proper precautions accordingly. Always do your research before trying something new.

Health issues – Cannabis 2, cocaine salt (‘coke’) 9, cocaine freebase (‘crack’) 9, LSD (‘acid’) 1, Ecstasy tablets 7, MDMA (pure Ecstasy ingredient) 3, heroin 10, PCP (‘angel dust’) 5, methamphetamine (‘meth’) 5, methaqualone (‘ludes’) 7, mescaline 1, psilocybin mushrooms 1, Flunitrazepam (‘roofies’) 7, DMT 1, GHB 7.

Addiction potential – Cannabis 4, cocaine salt 9, cocaine freebase 10, LSD 1, Ecstasy tablets 2, MDMA 2, heroin 9, PCP 3, methamphetamine 8, methaqualone 6, mescaline 1, psilocybin mushrooms 1, Flunitrazepam 6, DMT 1, GHB 4.

Dysfunction of effects – Cannabis 3, cocaine salt 2, freebase cocaine 2, LSD 8, Ecstasy tablets 4, MDMA 4, heroin 6, PCP 10, methamphetamine 1, methaqualone 4, mescaline , psilocybin mushrooms 8, Flunitrazepam 5, DMT 10, GHB 3.

Psychological impact – Cannabis 5, cocaine salt 4, freebase cocaine 5, LSD 10, Ecstasy tablets 7, MDMA 6, heroin 3, PCP 4, methamphetamine 4, methaqualone 2, mescaline 8, psilocybin mushrooms 8, Flunitrazepam 2, DMT 8, GHB 1.

I am 16 and in medicine for ADHD. The name of the meds are really Intuniv & Strattera, I tried to pull them out. Because I thought I was really happy with my performance on not using it and know that I can work without it. But my parents do not think I can do it and I will strive to live in When I am off, I have same problem as when I'm in it. But worse in the eyes of my parents. As a result, there is a bit of bias when testing out the behavior of me. meds meds I did some research and found that since they were created in your system will be cold turkey side effects make the least. What I want to do is to stop using. meds, but it seems to hide the pills that I take. It after a few weeks, I'll tell my parents, so the least bias. This is a good idea to do with How can my meds.

It is difficult to determine drug behavior. Working on your own, I was put on Prozac and are open to me as a monster. I do not understand it. But even working with my friends, my mother get me out of it. However, it is your body, so if you think you do not. Is it necessary to talk with your doctor. what is the difference between thetwo?

my mom and my doctor says i have both ADD and ADHD. but every one at school says they are the same thing but they are not. what are the differences between ADD and ADHD? i really need to know. to prove them wrong

The difference between ADD and ADHD, in short, is a simple “nothing.” But since I’m sure you want a more of a detailed explanation, I will elaborate.

Through the years ADHD (Attention Deficit/Hyperactive Disorder) has had many names. ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) is one of those many names. ADD has been used so recently and so frequently that many people still use it instead of ADHD. This has naturally created confusion among adults with ADHD and parents of children who have ADHD. It raises the question “Which one do I have?”

Imagine there is a new disease in San Francisco. The doctors study it and call it “Disease A.” Later that week, in Denver, doctors discover that same disease and not knowing that disease already exists, call it “Disease B.” Everywhere this disease shows up it is called by a different name. No one has made the connection that Disease A is the same thing as Disease B and C and D and etc… One day all the doctors get together at a conference and decide that all these alphabet diseases are the same thing. They call it by one name since twenty names for the same disease is confusing.

Now, try to relate the fictional story to ADHD, previously known as ADD, brain damaged syndrome, minimal brain dysfunction (MBD), hyperkinetic impulsive disorder, and so on. Since all of these have no major differences and are almost exactly alike, they are given one name. While the diversity is not as substantial, there are different types of ADHD just as there are different types of cancer. Could you imagine if lung cancer was called something totally different than colon cancer? It would get very confusing.

Some professionals still use the term “ADD” but it is the same as if they used “ADHD.” To sum it up, ADD technically is ADHD and vice versa.

There are two main types of ADHD: Inattentive and Hyperactive. Both are considered ADHD. If someone is diagnosed with ADD it’s the same as “ADHD: Predominately inattentive.” Predominately inattentive means that the hyper-active elements of ADHD are not as relevant

Why Do People Hate Hearing Honest/Truthful Answers?

This is more of a rant, than a genuine question, but…

I notice that people on yahoo answers hate reading truthful answers. This is just an example, not something that really happened: Someone will ask a question about how to lose weight. I’ll get a pile of thumbs down when I answer with “Eat less and exercise.” while other responses will be feel good answers like “take these magic pills, but neglect your calorie count, because the pills should work” will get thumbs up. Unbelievable.

If I ask a question, I don’t want bullsh** or feel good answers that are sugar coated. What gives?
Not to mention it gets picked as the best answer

You are so right! It’s because we’ve become a country full of narcissistic people who need to have their ears tickled all the time! Consequently, we either have to stroke everyone and tell them how wonderful they are, or weigh our words so that we’re politically correct, or we are considered to be mean-spirited and prejudiced and who knows what else! It’s so ridiculous — plus, the added down side is that our children are being brought up to believe that they should feel happy at all times, they should not have to compete, and they shouldn’t have to eat what they don’t want to, wear what they don’t want to, or DO what they don’t want to. The result? Mediocrity at best and the great probability that we are raising our children so poorly that they will not be able to compete in this global society. As soon as we succumbed to the notion that we need to feel good inside and out at all times and if we don’t, we have some alphabet soup psychological disorder that must be explored ad nauseum…well, we were on our way to ruin! ADHD-ADD-OCC-OCD and on and on. People need to find self-control and self discipline…How’s that for a continuation to your rant? I SO enjoyed your ‘rant’…Thanks for starting my day with all my blood circulating and raring to go!!!

Video Games are the Future

*Thirty Five Years Ago

The fledgling video game business was struggling to make a name for itself as it competed with toys, playing cards and board games for customers. The early games like Pong, Pac Man and Donkey Kong were very basic in terms of technology, and they had very little creativity involved with their designs and functions. Today, the computer online game industry is a multi billion dollar extravaganza that has progressed increasingly, and it is starting to steal some of the spotlight from the glamorous motion picture industry.

With technological advances like the next generation motion capture systems, high definition graphics, Dolby Sound and Motion Sensor Remote controls that enable the players to actually get up off their chairs and get some exercise as they kick, punch, jump, fish, swing, golf and dance their way through sessions, video games have become more than just toys. They are an escape that offers a whole new reality. Kids and adults alike are playing Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and Nintendo Wii games more than ever before and the industry itself is getting bigger and bigger every day.

But there is one great advantage that video games have over movies, and that is that they offer interaction. You can actually be involved with what is happening on the screen, instead of just watching it like you do at a theater. This gives you the feeling of empowerment that you just do not get from watching movies. These games offer more than an escape, they offer a journey into another world where your actions have no real negative consequences on yourself.

Video games have come a long way since the days of Pong, Pac Man and Donkey Kong. While the Video Game Awards are not quite the Oscars yet, they are certainly on a pace to give them a run for their money in the future in terms of publicity. Celebrities are starting to notice that the spotlight on Hollywood is being shared by a newcomer to the world of entertainment, and they are following the light, as they do naturally. It is an inevitable natural progression, much like the relationship between a whale and a pilot fish. Big celebrity names are starting to integrate into the computer game industry, and as this happens it only means more publicity for both parties involved. This is ultimately good for gamers too, for as the industry gets bigger and bigger, the games and the consoles will only get better and better.

Recently, many new online gaming services have been introduced. The world is having a visible affect on the online gaming industry, as more and more people turned towards playing and enjoying online games. Games on the Internet were once an imaginary phrase, but since the introduction of thousands of user friendly and easy operating games on the Internet, people are finding that fiction has become reality.

*Chill out and Play Games

One of the best ways the majority of us relax, stay engaged, stave off boredom, or even burn away hours at work is to play games video games, online computer games (if you dont know there are probably a few addictive games in your word program, right?), or online games.

While we now know, too, that when you play games (of any mode and of certain types), those games help to sharpen some of our mental faculties, Alzheimers, and, in my coo-coo world, the insanity of such needful mental aberrations as ADD, ADHD, and OCDthough this last benefit is not necessarily empirically proven. There has been quite a bit of research done on this topic and you can bet there will be a whole lot more to come.

So lets sit back, kick our shoes off, and relax playing your favorit games.

What do you do to focus on the course?

Golf is know as a sport that is more mental than physical. I have the physical part down pat. I get complimented on my swing a lot, and can hit the ball well. (I’m not trying to brag, I’m just trying to give you a better sense of the situation.) However, whenever I go out and play eighteen, I have such a hard time focusing on what I want to do. If I do manage to focus on some holes, I play much better than I do otherwise. Even if I go and tell myself I’m going to focus all eighteen, I forget and don’t do it. I have ADHD so I don’t know if that contributes to it. Basically I want to hear from people who had this problem and fixed it, or know of a proven method to fix it.

Thanks

I usually focus on the shot at hand, and not the entire 18 holes.

Is there any natural remedy/supplement that helps with ADD? I have Adult ADD (who doesn’t now days)! This has been a big problem for me lately, I think it’s the stress and such but, I am determined not to go on prescription medication. I’m sure I’ll get silly answers but thanks in advance to the serious advisors 🙂

I’m from Australia and they have started to treat children with fish oil instead of ritulin(or however you spell it) and dexamphetamine. This might help you. You can get it at Pharmacy. Morman Tea is also filled with Ephedra if you could get this it might help.

Adhd Diet Foods List

adhd diet foods list

Is There a Diet for Adhd ? – Some Research Findings

I bet that many parents who have children who suffer from ADHD think that diet is marginal and that an ADHD diet can only make life more complicated than it really is! Let me try and persuade you that the food children eat really does have an impact on their development and especially as regards hyperactivity and other related ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) problems.

I want to list some of the research studies done in this area and if you already are converted, you can take a pat on the back. If you are skeptical, you may want to reflect on the information here.

We now know that there is a lack of essential minerals and vitamins in many children’s diets. This is mainly due to snack and junk foods. The main ones lacking are magnesium, amino acids, vitamin C, omega 3, iron and zinc. In one research project a group of children were given 200mg of magnesium for a trial period of six months. A second group were given the usual placebo. At the end of the trial period, there was notable reduction in hyperactivity and restlessness in the group who had been given magnesium. Similar results were found for all the other essential minerals mentioned above.

A few studies have been done to show that an excess of sugar can lead to hyperactivity and impulsiveness. Even though these studies are somewhat controversial, we will be doing our children a great favour in reducing sugar intake to avoid other problems like obesity and diabetes. Sugary drinks like Gatorade and other pop should be replaced with water.

The British Food Agency carried out a large scale study and they found that certain colourings and additives (E102, E104 and E110 in particular) found in children’s snacks were to blame for increased hyperactivity and other attention deficit disorders. This received a lot of attention in the press recently and raised awareness of the importance of an ADHD diet.

We should help our children to avoid exposure to certain metals and aluminum. Tooth fillings (the amalgam type) and even crowns and dental braces are known to contain certain metals such as nickel, cadmium and mercury which is the most toxic of all.

Omega 3 is contained in fish, fish oils, borage oils and also flax seed oils. When you are preparing food, you can easily add them, eg, as salad dressings.

Do you need more help with ADHD? If you are unsure where to turn and what treatment is valid, you should bear in mind the FDA warning about psychostimulants which are often prescribed without sufficient guidelines eg. these drugs have possible cardiovascular risks and risks of adverse psychiatric symptoms! For more advice you should visit the site below which will help you through the ADHD jungle including advice on medication and a suitable diet for ADHD.

Do you or have you used the Feingold diet to help conquer ADHD?

Do you know where I could find a list online? Or could you tell me some of the foods that you used?

Yes, I have used the Feingold diet for my daughter. She was never really diagnosed with ADD or ADHD, but she can be a handful. I noticed that when she had any candy with red dye 40 in it, she would be bouncing everywhere and not listen to what I had to say. I was shocked to find out that white cake frosting has red dye 40 in it. You really have to watch the labels. Artists telling the truth about Attention Deficit Disorder

Their videos communicate to lots of people as the number of “views” on Youtube sky rocket.

Artists have often been the trend setters for any current-day issue.  Now, they are standing up for the children who can not express for themselves, the pains of being labeled and medicated.

The Citizens Commission on Human Rights of Florida (CCHR Florida), a non-profit organization that investigates and exposes psychiatric violations of human rights and co-founded in 1969 by Professor Thomas Szasz, Professor of Psychiatry Emeritus, and the Church of Scientology, has launched a music/performance video contest to help generate more and more art that speaks to the public and gets them fully informed about the harmful side effects of psychotropic medication.

Millions of children worldwide are placed on mind-altering psychiatric drugs. Their parents are never given the full information on the FDA warnings and side effects.  This leads to tragic consequences.  Parents are not told that there are no medical tests to prove that one single mental health disorder exists.  They are not told that there are medical tests that can be done to detect underlying physical causes, such as nutritional deficiencies, allergies, thyroid problems and more.

To find out all the details of the contest go to www.cchrflorida.org (scroll half-way down the page)

The winner receives 8 full hours of studio session time at one of the Top studios.

Can someoe please help me with the ADHD diet?

Hello. I am a mother of 3 young boys. One of my children recently saw a doctor who said he is sensitive to life:), could have ADHD..It was a crazy visit. Anyhow I have been google searching for weeks on the ADHD diet. I figured what could it hurt to try it. Also something called FEINGOLD? In order to recieve any of the FEINGOLD diet info I must pay 70.00..anyhow, the Adhd diet basically says no cow milk, sweet, fried foods, anything with sweetner of artifical coloring yellow, blue, ect. I am afraid that I am messing up. If I read the diet correctly it seems to me as a low carb diet. Lots of protein, but can I still give him fruits and chesse(cosidering it’s dairy). I just need a correct menu on what to feed him for the first 2 weeks! Anyone with any exact meal plan..Agh it would help so much! Thanks for any answers!

My son is ADHD. I think overall it’s important for your child to have a well balanced diet. At his age, calcium is still very important.

I’ve also seen diet programs that put ADHD children on high fat diets.

Ourselves, we elected to, with the help of our sons doctor and psycologist to proceed with medication. That may not work for your son as well as it as for our own son. There are risks along with the benefits and you have to make the choices that are best for you and your family.

Enjoy this challenge! Seriously, enjoy the challent and rewards of working with a spectacular individual!

what is adhd disease

Does anyone else think ADD/ ADHD is a fictional ‘disease’?

Ok, ive had, and my parents had, and their parents had, and their parents before them had trouble focusing in school. I mean HUGE trouble , like they (and now I) brought in tape recorders to record the lessons because 90 percent of the trouble of school was focusing. They (and me) would study hours a day to get Bs, while other kids seemed to slip by with As and Bs effortlessly!

BUT I find when im interested, I have less trouble focusing and my mind dosent wander that much. Does our family really have a case of inherited ADD? I see kids who have been diagnosed with ADD, but it seems really stupid because I dont think there really genetically disabled, their just bored. Thats my families problem, we just get BORED in school! We all have our own attention defecits, mine is Mathematics. Do we take our attention defecits and blame it on a disease, and take pills?

What do you all think? Are we a nation that has been ‘infected’ with ADD or do we all have our own attention defecits?

ADD is a genuine psychological condition – the problem is mainly that the standards for diagnosis vary a lot, and doctors are really quick to prescribe medication, so in some cases, it really might just be a problem with being understimulated.

And everyone has an easier time focusing on things they like, regardless of wether they have ADD.

best natural adult add supplement

What are the best natural supplements for adult ADD?

I’m a 21 year old with ADD, I was diagnosed in the fourth grade. I haven’t been taking any drugs for about two years now, but since I started college I was thinking about taking something to help me concentrate. I’d prefer natural supplements, as I do not have health insurance at the moment, and when I was taking prescription meds I hated them (Name an ADD medicine, I’ve probably been on it). I’ve heard something about Sam-E, I think it was called, but I don’t know much about it. Any advice would be great, thanks!

Beware when trying Serotonin inhibitors. Sam-e and St. Johns Wort tend to be more beneficial for depression so they increase the activity of your receptors instead of stabilizing them. So you could put yourself on edge. Which will cause a bigger problem in concentration. L-Theanine is a relaxant that is said to make strives in ADD. You could find it at your local Vitamin store.

Diet in adults is a big factor. Adult ADD tends to lead to a bigger craving for carbohydrates. Cutting down on Carbohydrates, sugars, dairy and saturated fats will help you to regulate your focus. Also DHA, Magnesium and Amino Acids will help with brain function to maintain concentration. It sound’s like a lot of work. Unfortunately there is no cure all for it, just a remedy to suppress symptoms. Simply following all these steps will make enough difference that you will notice a difference and your peers will too.

Should ensure good academic performance to participate in sports after school?

My ex and I have differences on this idea. Age: 12 years I have always fought with the school. Very bright, but he has been diagnosed as having. ADHD and BiPolar. He just come home better grades and his teacher said that if he can learn at home than to receive and B The Last time he played football and mark the bad grade. He applied to basketball, this time marks. ….. But I said no to his good grades and he can show me that he can maintain. Good grades while playing sports, he will not be able to participate. My ex thought it was too strict and think sport is good for his self esteem. (Which I agree) but if we. Actually believe that he will opt for sports teams. pro when he was older – and I think that academics are important and the two sports. I Am wrong.

Sports qualify students to show they can manage time well enough to get homework done and study for school If your child does not get the grades they need, he should not. Permission to engage in extracurricular activities at the consumer from time to his work in school When his grades, he will be allowed to start again They do in college. If sports scores dropped below a certain level of athlete they will stop playing. . Reflects the fact that colleges do better in school and entering college and finishing. Is the biggest factor in helping you have a good job. Things to add to their pride to football is not. counterract damage to his own pride to do bad in school building.

Natural Remdies for ADHD Children and Lifestyle Changes are an Alternative to Medications

Natural remedies for ADHD children do exist. As most people are aware, ADHD stands for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Children affected by this disorder have a difficult time keeping still, maintaining their concentration, forgetfulness, impaired judgment and learning disabilities. The majority of children diagnosed with this disorder are put on Ritalin or other pharmaceutical therapies.

Studies have shown that ADHD is caused by a problem in the area of the brain that is responsible for coordinating external stimuli. Norepinephrine, a chemical in the brain, carries messages back and forth between different areas of the brain. These messages activate the needed areas, while telling unneeded areas to shut down. In ADHD, this process is impaired, allowing different areas of the brain to compete with various stimuli. The result is confusing for the child, and they can get irritated, aggressive or anxious.

For those who wish to use natural remedies for their ADHD children, there are diet and lifestyle changes to make in addition to herbal remedies. They have been found to be effective, and don’t lose effectiveness over time like pharmaceutical drugs.

First, the child should avoid sugar. There is evidence that children with ADHD may not process sugars properly, resulting in aggressive and restless behavior. Soft drinks should also be avoided, even the sugar-free varieties. Soft drinks contain phosphates that cause exaggerated muscle activity due to the fact that they displace calcium and magnesium levels.

Make sure your child gets enough sunlight. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is sometimes misdiagnosed as ADHD or ADD. Full-spectrum lighting can be used if the child cannot go outdoors.

The herbs that have been found most useful in treating ADHD naturally are Skullcap, Gingko biloba, German chamomile, Oatstraw, Gotu Kola, Rooibos, Valerian, Lemon Balm, Ginseng (both Siberian and Panax) and Hawthorn. Some of these herbs can be found in combination remedies.

Gingko is well-known for improving memory. It also increases blood flow to the brain and increases the neurotransmitter levels, which will improve a child’s ability to focus. Gingko also tends to make these changes permanent, so it doesn’t need to be taken forever.

Gotu Kola also helps memory and brain function, while decreasing anxiety. Research is also showing that Gotu Kola helps increase circulation.

Siberian Ginseng is another brain stimulant (amazingly, stimulating the brain actually helps those with ADHD to focus). It also helps moderate the body’s release of energy. Panax Ginseng normalizes body function and relieves stress and fatigue.

Yet another facet of natural remedies for ADHD lies in homeopathy. Homeopathy distills the essence of plants into small beads that melt under the tongue. Homeopathy is based on the theory that like cures like, so if you had a fever, you’d take a remedy that was known to cause heat. That is a very simplistic explanation, but it conveys the gist of it. Many parents have had good results using homeopathy for ADHD, and the remedies are extremely gentle. Nux Vomica, for example has been used successfully for ADHD, in the 6x strength, which is available over the counter at any health food store that sells homeopathic medications.

Try out some of the natural remedies for ADHD before subjecting your child to the pharmaceutical alternatives. Whether you choose homeopathic or herbal remedies, you can find something safer for your child.

A Must Know Guide To Behavior Therapy For ADHD

Why bother with behaviour therapy for ADHD? More and more parents and doctors and pediatricians too, are realizing that ADHD medication with psychostimulants is just not enough.

Lots of research now shows that behavioural therapy will have a much more profound effect on the child’s development. Don’t just take pills, teach skills! That could be the motto for all the stakeholders involved, except the drug companies who are pursuing a rather different agenda. Even if it is reduced to tips for parents, behaviour therapy for ADHD is a much better investment all round.

Medication has come first, up to now. In an interesting book called ‘The Diseasing of America’s Children’the well known paediatrician Dr. Ravenel has called for a halt to the over medication of our children and advocates a much broader more intelligent approach which makes use of behavioural therapy for ADHD. He says that medication should be the last option.

What sort of tips for parents and strategies can be learnt from this behaviour therapy for ADHD? Parents who are being attacked by their children will know how to handle them and regain control of the family. Sometimes children are so badly behaved at school that they are sent home where the problems seem to multiply. If there is an element of ODD (Oppositional Defiance Disorder) and mood swings, the doctor may prescribe yet another pill. The problem is that to cope with the constant defiance, arguments and bickering, the parents need to learn some coping strategies. That is exactly what behaviour therapy for ADHD sets out to do. Otherwise they will end up with a child who may commit an offence or worse.

One of the other tips for parents is how to control how much media time kids are allowed. Experts believe that just by clicking a mouse will not train them very well in concentrating which is often a problem when they do homework. It is thought that kids love computers because they are in complete control and it seems to make up for the fact that 5-10 year olds have problems with establishing eye contact with adults. With a computer in the bedroom, the computer gives them its full attention. It could in a way be a substitute for absent parents or a host of other problems. By applying behaviour therapy, you will learn how much media time is best and also how to get them weaned off it.

Sometimes, behaviour therapy for ADHD is sufficient to help children with ADHD. But not always, as some sort of medication is needed to calm the child and help him to focus his attention better. This is where a homeopathic remedy for ADHD beats the psychostimulants hands down.

My son has ADHD, and developmental problems, is there more to it?

Im not real sure about this, never done this before, but i need a little help. My son has adhd, but i beleive there may be a little more to it than that, he avoids eye contact, has weird ticks with his fingers not real loving, im being to bleive that he may also have autism, any help will be greatly appreciated!!

You haven’t said how old your son is or if this is new behavior for him or not. If this has been going on for some time, it may well be autism. However, if he’s just started adhd meds, it can be a side effect of the meds. You can always take your son to a child psychiatrist (for med checks) to make sure that he is receiving the proper treatment and support.

Adhd Coaching Virginia

adhd coaching virginia

Are you in Charge of your Life?

Is life just passing you by without you taking any part in it? Is your voice not being heard? The following are six signs that you know you are letting your life slip by without having any input. But have no fear, there are ways to take back charge of your life.

1. You aren’t taken seriously

When in a group of people, even by the water cooler, your mouth is shut tight. You think of witty and intelligent things to say, yet you are silenced. Or, when you are able to pry your mouth open, the social butterflies take complete control and cut you off. You know that you can contribute to the conversation as well, but you just need an extra boost of confidence to make that first step forward.

2. You never take a stand on any issue

You think you have opinions on issues, but you’re not sure if you should talk about these sensitive topics. When you really do think about it, you start to feel a little more one way about an issue than the other way. Be educated first before discussing the issue. Research the topics and find out information regarding both sides of an issue. Once you think you know enough about these topics, then you will be able to have confident conversations.

3. You are afraid to follow your dreams

You have dreams, you know what makes you the happiest. But you are afraid of the future, afraid of the uncertainties, and possibilities. You are afraid to make the first move, so you hold on to the security of your present life.

4. You could be bigger, but you stay small

You talk big. You dream big. You make plans in your head, but just accept what you are given. Achieving your dreams isn’t always the easiest thing to do. So you stay at your job that pays the bills.

5. You can’t do anything without someone else’s approval

You have ideas and plans but can’t go anywhere with them without asking someone else if they think your thoughts are good. You think your ideas are great when they first come to fruition, but the thought of someone else disapproving of your ideas makes all self-confidence run away.

6. You have no plan for your life

Wake up, go to work, go to sleep; wake up, go to work, go to sleep; wake up, go to work, go to sleep. Interspersed with the occasional party or time spent with friends on weekends, this is how every day of your life has looked. You have no future plans for yourself. You just work the job you have and live the life you have accepted. You have thought of things that you could do, thinking “that could be neat,” but that’s all you do: just think about it.

If you are not in charge of your life, then one way that you can take charge of it and improve your quality of life is by hiring a life coach. Life coaches are increasingly popular these days among all types of people searching for self-improvement. They help you to refocus your life and to make it go in the direction you originally wished for. And, most of all, they give you hope for your life and future. So if you feel like you have no control over your life, then, maybe, it’s time to hire a life coach.

Adhd Natural Remedies For Adults

Monday, June 1st, 2009

adhd natural remedies for adults

A natural remedy for ADHD is omega 3 – or is it?

Is Omega 3 a natural remedy for ADHD? The simple answer is
no. Omega 3 is an essential fatty acid that is absolutely
vital for adults, hence the word ‘essential’ – for children
of birth age until age two, it is even more important that
they receive enough of the Omega 3 fatty acid DHA for the
healthy construction of the brain. Beyond two years, they
need EPA for the healthy function of the brain.

So why is it not a remedy? It is not a remedy for the
simple reason that it should already be included in the
diet, and not simply as an afterthought to add it to the
diet because the child or adult has ADHD.

Does this mean that if you give a person with ADHD
high-strength pharmaceutical grade fish oil in addition to
a poor diet, they will not feel any effects? The answer has
to be yes, of course they will feel the effects. If you
starve anyone for long enough of vital nutrients then the
body will react in certain ways – if you then replace those
nutrients, the body will return in time to its correct
balance.

What is ADHD? A good definition is as follows:

A common developmental and behavioural disorder, it is
characterised by poor concentration, distractibility,
hyperactivity, and impulsiveness that are inappropriate for
the child’s age. Children and adults with ADHD are easily
distracted by sights and sounds in their environment,
cannot concentrate for long periods of time, are restless
and impulsive, or have a tendency to daydream and be slow
to complete tasks.

Fish oil supplementation

With current research revealing that Omega 3 fatty acid
deficiencies may be a factor affecting learning
difficulties, authorities in Durham, England, initiated a
programme to see if it was possible that an improved diet
would lead to improvements in the classroom. But
overturning the high-carbohydrate, heavily-processed diets
that children typically consume was going to be a momentous
task. So they decided to see if fatty acids in the form of
a fish oil supplement could be of any use.

This was the largest and most extensive trial looking at
Omega 3 fatty acids and learning conditions to be carried
out within the United Kingdom.

This trial involved more than 100 children at 12 primary
schools in the Durham area. The trial looked at dyspraxia
and motor skills, but also assessed for dyslexia and ADHD.

Trial results

At the start of the trial, the percentage of children
within the clinical range of an ADHD diagnosis was set at
32% for the fish oil group and 31% for the placebo group.

After 3 months of omega 3 fish oil supplementation, the
percentage of children within the clinical range of an ADHD
diagnosis reduced to 18% for the fatty acid group, whereas
this only dropped 1 % for the placebo group.

A raw score was calculated from the teacher rating form
that assessed each child’s behaviour. After 3 months there
was a highly significant reduction seen in the fish oil
supplement group, compared to those on placebo, in this
behavioural score. The fatty acid group reduced from an
average score of 74.7 to 58.1., whereas the before and
after treatment scores for the placebo group were 69.5 and
67.9.

The active fish oil group also saw significantly reduced
teacher ratings on the Conners’ DSM ADHD global scale after
3 months, compared with the placebo group. The placebo
group saw similar improvements on this scale after crossing
over to the active fish oils for the 3-6 month period of
the trial.

Within 3 months children on the active supplement saw a
significant reduction on the rating scale of
Hyperactive-Impulsive behaviour, compared to those on
placebo. Further reductions were seen in the 3-6 month
period of the study.

Dramatic results were also seen within just 3 months of the
dyspraxia trial. The active group supplementing with Omega
3 fish oil saw significant improvements in reading (9.5
months), spelling (6.5 months) and behaviour, compared to
the placebo group where no overall improvement was made.

During the 3-6 month period when the placebo group crossed
over to Omega 3 fish oil supplementation, considerable
improvements were shown in the same areas, with an average
reading gain of 13.5 months and an average spelling gain at
over 6 months. The active group continuing supplementation
displayed further signs of progress or maintained their
improvement.

At the start of the trial, children were a year behind
their chronological age for reading and spelling, but after
the trial, the active group who had been on Omega 3 fish
oil throughout the trial made spelling and reading gains
over and above their age.

An alternative view

On the face of things these results look fairly conclusive.
However, when you take into account that by their own
admission they had a real battle with the children (and in
some cases parents) to change their eating habits then the
results – to a qualified dietician and anyone who knows
what a balanced diet is – swing. Far from seeming to show
that fish oil cures ADHD and dyspraxia, it rather appears
to demonstrate the need for a very balanced diet, with all
these nutritional components included in the first place.

What would be far more interesting than turning a lot of
unruly children’s diets into the correct balance and then
claiming that fish oil helps with ADHD, would be to take a
lot of children who eat a very balanced Mediterranean style
diet, which is already very balanced, and perform a trial
with those children to see if it actually improves their
reading or spelling ability.

Conclusion

Not all the children involved in the trial showed great
gains in behaviour, spelling and reading, and those
children that did show great gains were in my opinion
children who were very badly deficient in Omega 3 already
through a very poor diet.

The correct approach is not to supplement children with
fish oil, but to drastically improve the child’s eating
habits, following the example of a Mediterranean diet which
includes oily fish, and trying to cut out all additives and
preservatives and the wrong kinds of “bad fats”.
As most parents will know this is almost an impossibility,
but changing a few little things about the diet will make a
difference. As for the fish oil capsules, if you really
can’t get your child to eat oily fish then as this trial
proves, supplementing with a high quality fish oil
supplement is highly advisable so that your child can get
the correct amount of Omega 3 in their diet.

Sometips to Manage Add

ADD is an acronym for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. It is a condition where the patient is not able to maintain attention for a good period of time. Other symptoms of this disorder include impulsive behavior and motor restlessness. According to a research conducted, about 4.4% of all adults have ADD.

ADD is classified as a neurobiological disorder usually caused by problems in the dopamine neurotransmitter systems in the brain. Most cases of this disorder are inherited. It is proved that if a parent or a close blood relative has ADD then there is about 30% chance that a child will have ADD.

In case of twins, if one of the twins has developed ADD, then there is almost 50 percent chance that the other twin will also develop ADD. ADD is not a result of poor nutrition. It is a disease that develops due to parenting, allergies and drugs.

You need to go for a thorough analysis of your body in order to determine if the person has ADD and not any other health related problem.

When a person is unable to get adequate amount of neuro-chemicals, the brain is not stimulated properly. This makes it find different ways to increase their release. Things including physical activity, movement or anything related to stimulation are different ways. People with ADD stimulate their brains. In short, there is a good amount of reflex to their inadequate reception of neuro-chemicals. This makes people with ADD act in a particular way. They are literally unable to control their actions.

There are many problems this action causes to people with ADD when they face a situation that does not stimulate them such as school work. This results in poor performance in the classroom. Actually, a person or child with ADD cannot help indulging in a particular act. It is simply out of their control.

People with ADD cannot stay in a particular relationship or staying employed. These people with ADD may do things to stimulate themselves. This can be reckless and dangerous. This is the reason that results in complicating their live with legal problems.

Some steps to cope with and healing attention deficit disorder:

ADD is a serious disorder. It results in depression, relationship inattentiveness, and behavioral problems. These problems can eventually lead to drug abuse, suicide and alcoholism. Here are some important steps to follow in order to correct it:

a) Education

Understand that ADD is caused by abnormalities in the cortex region of the brain. These are mostly genetics.

b) Medical attention

Do not wait at all. Get medical aid on an immediate basis.

c) Nutrition

You should eat a well balanced diet. Try to take multivitamins and drink plenty of water. Multivitamins are a necessity as many of the foods we eat lack in nutritional value. Take omega’s supplements.

d) Hydration

You need to drink at least 8-10 glasses of water per day for proper mental functioning.

e) Plan

Use a day planner. Keep a track of things you need to do on a daily basis. This will eliminate stress and anxiety.

f) Learn

Believe in the art of memorization and studying. Exercise learning memory techniques like associations, linking, lists etc.

g) Meditate

Stress and anxiety can make the condition worse. Prayer and meditation can benefit ADD sufferers.

So i pulled an all nighter….how to stay awake all day?

I didnt sleep last night. I do this sometimes, and then sleep during the day…but today I need to stay awake all day. Coffee, and energy drinks don’t keep my awake…it really just puts me to sleep…( part of my adhd) WHAT CAN I DO OR LIKE EAT OR FOCUS ON TO KEEP ME AWAKE ALL DAY?? I PLAN ON WEARING MY SUNGLASSES ALL DAY LOL

i think i can help.i work overnight during the week but i like enjoying my weekends in the sun… so i usually dont go to bed when i come back from work on fridays.
what i do is i eat lots of fruits and veggies (vitamins). try to keep away from really sugary stuff.. sure it gives you a temporary boost, but after you crash.
drink lots of water and keep yourself busy. if you sitdown or get bored, for sure youll feel the tiredness sink in.
an other tip, instead of eating the regular three meals (which are probably usualy big) eat several small healty ones. eavy meal makes you want to go to bed because you body has to concentrate a lot of energy in digesting the food. if you keep it light your body doesnt have to burn as much energy.

adhd low income

What can I do to improve myself?

I’m a male in my early twenties with low self-esteem, ADHD, social anxiety, and OCD, which is primarily obsessional fears about getting hurt by others and compulsions of checking. I don’t have any psychotic disorders, and I’ve tried medication, done therapy, so please, no outside suggestions, I’m just looking for some personal advice because I don’t know how to help myself.

I literally have no friends, I’m at home all the time with no income, and I’m not a student anymore either. I’m slowly losing all my savings, and soon I’ll have to sell my car, which I worked for previously. I’m also overweight and have never kissed a girl, so yeah, not good. Where do I start?

You can walk. Walking is free. You need a job badly. But while you don’t have one you can walk. The trick is just to do it. Get up, get dressed, go out and walk. Then write down how long you walked, and walk more tomorrow.
Get a job. Any job.
The girls, ect will come later. You don’t want them now anyway. This isn’t the real you. Walk, then run.

Adhd Evaluation Scale

adhd evaluation scale

Conner’s Rating Scale – a Tool for Diagnosing Adhd

As more and more people have become aware of the occurrence of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, the incorrect diagnosis of the dysfunction has, unfortunately, become commonplace. One of the tricky things about ADHD is that all people, at one time or another, display some of the symptoms of the condition, and this is particularly true of children. It is important to understand that a correct diagnosis of ADHD can only be arrived at after measuring certain criterion, using certain tools. We will take a look at one of these tools and the criteria measured with it in this article.

Conner’s Rating Scale

This tool is used by parents, teachers, and also by the adolescent in order to report on criteria that he or she feels may be present. It has been designed specifically for ADHD testing, and is used in the first criterion for diagnosing ADHD.

The first criterion of correctly identifying the ADHD dysfunction states that in order to properly be diagnosed, the subject must have had six or more or the following symptoms evident for at least six month prior to the test. In addition, these symptoms must have played a disruptive and inappropriate role for that age level. The symptoms include:

Excessive talking

Blurting out at inappropriate times

Trouble getting activities organized

Frequent losing of objects needed for tasks or activities

A lack of focus on tasks

Careless mistakes or a lack of close attention to details

Failure to complete tasks and to follow instructions

Dislikes prolonged mental effort

Easily distracted

Trouble awaiting a turn

Interrupts

Fidgeting

Frequently “on the go”

As you can see from this list, many of the criteria used to diagnose ADHD are also a part of the natural development of any child. That is why it is so important to measure the child’s symptoms over a period of time, using the correct tools, such as Conner’s rating system.

Although the initial evaluation needs to be done at a personal level, no diagnosis of ADHD is correct without the support of a psychiatrist. Again, it is imperative to note that ADHD follows very strict parameters; misdiagnosing a child could result in irreversible damage.

Adhd Exercise Ball

Can children learn to meditate?

As meditation becomes more and more popular among adults, teaching meditation to children is being promoted as a way to create centeredness and focus at a tender age. Yet many teachers and parents recognize the difficulty of a young child to silence the mind and sit still. As a result, a variety of “children’s meditations” are being invented that often use imagination, focusing on the breath or trying to find stillness within. Unwittingly, these practices have been introduced to children without any track record of success and little if any scientific research on the effects they may have on a child’s brain and development.

Some parents may wonder: should children be taught to discipline their minds or channel their imagination for specific purposes? At what age is it appropriate for my child to meditate? What kind of practice is safe and effective for children? Is there any tradition, precedence or scholarly authority behind the practice of children’s meditation? Is meditation something I can teach my child, or do along with them?

The ancient, venerated Vedic Tradition of meditation prescribes different practices at specific stages of development in the child’s life. Because very young children are still integrating their inner world with the outer world around them, they may find it difficult to practice a meditation that requires them to sit still or inhibits their natural inclination to know and discover. Attempts to settle a child through directing their attention to breathing or trying to create inner silence may instead cause strain and frustration for the exuberant, growing child.

One technique of meditation that has been successfully introduced to many middle and high schools throughout America and around the world is the Transcendental Meditation technique. Based on the broad spectrum of scientific research on the effectiveness of the TM technique for students, [1] educators have felt confident that the Transcendental Meditation program is a safe and reliable practice to help children cope with stress and improve learning ability [2] and behavior [3]. Over 140,000 school children around the world have learned the TM technique in the past three years.

Science has looked at what happens in a the brain during the practice of the TM technique. Findings indicate a healthy development of coherence and balance between all parts of the brain, with increased activation of the pre-frontal cortex [4], the part of the brain responsible for discrimination and higher reasoning. Notably, this type of holistic brain functioning is not found while a child is studying, playing, watching TV, or listening to music; nor does this balanced, holistic brain functioning come about through other types of meditation exercises, such as minding the breath, visualizing, or directing the imagination. All such activities activate specific areas of the brain. Only the meditative state associated with ‘transcending’ during TM practice has been found to activate the entire brain in this holistic way.

Practice of the TM technique not only stimulates brain development and learning ability in children, but also provides natural relief from stress, anxiety, [5] depression [6] and fatigue. “One of the best-documented ways to address anxiety in children is to teach them to deeply relax themselves. Children and adolescents often encounter stress at home and at school” says Dr. William Stixrud, clinical neuropsychologist and faculty at the Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C.. “If you can effectively treat a child’s anxiety problems, you significantly decrease the likelihood that they’re going to develop depression, or addictive behaviors, or other kinds of mental health problems. Transcendental Meditation becomes a very important tool, not only in the treatment of children with anxiety problems, but also in the prevention of anxiety disorders.”

Reducing stress [7] and increasing inner happiness increases flexibility, social abilities and self esteem. Children who find approval from within rather than needing it from the outside, are less influenced by peer pressure. Cultivating the practice of meditation can become a valuable tool that a child uses as he matures, preparing him to meet the stresses and challenges of adulthood.

What is the appropriate time in a child’s development to sit and practice eyes-closed meditation? According to the tradition of theTranscendental Meditation program—the Vedic Tradition—no sooner than ten years of age. Starting with just a few minutes morning and afternoon, children ten and older find the practice of the Transcendental Meditation technique easy to master because it doesn’t require focus, concentration or that they sit still. Even children with ADHD are able to practice this meditation successfully [8].

What about children under ten? A special practice appropriate for the developmental stage of early childhood it is the Maharishi Word of Wisdom technique. This eyes-open meditation can be learned by children starting at ages three to four. This practice strengthens the mind and stabilizes the emotions of the young child. The children’s TM technique is practiced a few minutes each day with eyes open, while the child is quietly engaged in easy, natural activities such as walking or coloring. The children’s technique has been found to promote balance in mind and body and integrate the child’s nervous system. [9] The child grows in stability in relation to the outer world and does not become introverted or withdrawn by attempting many such meditative practices that would be unatural for them.

Children benefit most from meditation when their parents are also meditating. A family that meditates together typically finds that their home life grows more harmonious and blissful. There’s more time for nourishing interactions when stress is released during meditation instead of outbursts and arguments.

So what will it be for your children, zoning out in front of the TV, or a few minutes of daily meditation?
