Fatigued before Sports

I play football, and every single time I go to a game I feel so fatigued! Sometimes to the point where I don’t even feel like playing. I hate this feeling, because it seems that I’m fine when I’m out biking, or even hanging out with friends. It’s weird too, because for the first 20 minutes I’m really fatigued and tired and then I could feel fine. I have hypothyroidism and add (not adhd). I take medications; levothyroxin 150mg and concerta 54mg. I am 14 years old, and please help me because I am not playing as well as I was in the beginning of the season, and none of my teammates seem to be fatigued before a game (there all pumped up, excited, etc.) Thanks.

Sometimes when I dread going to work (or, at least, would just as soon not go) I feel just like that. Tired, drained, maybe even a little bit bummed out. I get over it after a while, but then the next day maybe it’s the same thing. BUT if I’m doing anything/going anywhere else I mysteriously feel just fine.

Common Birth Defects in Children

Ideally, all children everywhere would be born innately healthy, both at the moment of birth and during later development. Unfortunately, this is not the case.

Many children throughout the world – even in the most “modern” countries with advanced health care – are born each year with medical conditions that will lead to disability at some point in the future. Others develop conditions later on that also result in difficulties in managing daily living activities and/or learning activities.

In the US alone, more than 4 million children under the age of 18 are classified as having a disability due to a physical or mental health impairment.

Let’s take a look at some of the more common conditions that can lead to disability in children.

1. Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (AD/HD)

AD/HD is a disorder that makes it hard for children to sit still, control their behavior, and pay attention. It is usually diagnosed before the age of 7, but not always. Doctors aren’t sure what causes AD/HD, but studies support the theory that it is related to an imbalance of certain chemicals in the brain called neurotransmitters. There is no quick treatment for AD/HD, but the symptoms can be managed.

2. Autism/Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD)

Autism is a kind of PDD. Aspergers Syndrome is closely related as well. The US Disabilities Education Act defines autism as, “a developmental disability significantly affecting verbal and nonverbal communication and social interaction, generally evident before age 3, that adversely affects a child’s educational performance.” Children with autism have a wide range of abilities, intelligence, and behaviors. Early diagnosis is important. Again, experts are not sure what causes autism, but the symptoms can be managed. Many children who have autism grow up to be productive, functioning adults.

3. Cerebral Palsy (CP)

CP is a condition resulting from an injury to the part of the brain that controls the nerves and muscles. This injury can occur before birth, during delivery, or shortly after birth. CP can be mild, moderate or severe. Disability can range from being slightly clumsy to being confined to a wheelchair. Children with CP can have learning disabilities, sensory problems, and sometimes mental retardation.

4. Sensory Problems

Sensory problems can include both hearing impairment (deafness) and blindness. Hearing loss can occur at any time, from infancy on. The causes vary widely. Although a hearing loss in and of itself doesn’t affect a child’s intellectual capacity or ability to learn, it may require special adaptations. Blindness can also have a number of different causes. Severity can range from partially sighted to low vision to legally blind to totally blind. Visual handicaps can create many obstacles to a child’s ability to grown and learn.

5. Down Syndrome

Down syndrome is the most common chromosomally-related cause of mental retardation. For unknown reasons, a child with Down syndrome ends up with an extra chromosome, which interferes with the orderly development of the body and brain. Some of the more common signs of Downs are poor muscle tone, slanted eyes with folds of skin at the inner corners, short, broad hands and feet, and a short neck with a small head. Children with Down syndrome may also have other health problems. There tends to be a wide variation in mental and physical abilities among the Down population, but early intervention is the best course of action to prevent as much disability as possible.

6. Learning Disabilities

Learning disability is a term that means the child has trouble learning and using specific skills. Some of the more common skills affected are reading, writing, speaking, reasoning, and doing math. Learning disabilities can vary greatly from child to child. Experts believe that learning disabilities are caused by differences in how a person’s brain works and how it processes information. Children with learning disabilities are not stupid or lazy. Indeed, they often have average or even above average intelligence. There is no cure, but children can be taught to work around their disability and learn successfully.

7. Speech and Language Impairments

Speech and language impairments refer to problems in communication and related areas such as oral motor function. Causes can include hearing loss, neurological disorders, brain injury and cleft lip/palate. Timely intervention will usually prevent severe disability as a result of speech impairments.

8. Spina Bifida

One of the most common “birth defects,” spina bifida is an incomplete closure of the spinal column during a baby’s development while still in the womb. It can range from mild to severe, with the degree of disability corresponding. Symptoms can include muscle weakness, poor bowel and bladder control, and a buildup of fluid in the brain. With therapy and adaptations, children with spina bifida are usually able to function in their environments successfully.

Attention Deficit Disorder: Causes, Symptoms and Treatments

Attention deficit disorder (ADD) also referred as Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurological disorder usually found in children of elementary school age. This condition begins in childhood and is mostly detected between an ages of four to seven. This situation is typically characterized by learning and behavioral disorders. A child having this disorder needs to be brought up with extra attention and care.


There is no particular reason resulting in Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). Researchers have however pointed to several factors which may cause this condition. They include genetics, physical and social environment and diet. Studies also indicate that as much as 75% of Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder is heritable to the genetics factor.

Environmental causes include tobacco, alcohol or exposure to smoke during pregnancy. Other important cause which plays a role is complications faced during pregnancy and child birth.

Other important cause is delay or early development of brain structure. For example frontal cortex and lobe are the ones responsible for focused thinking and an ability to control. If there is a delay in there development it can result in ADD.


Common symptoms observed in a child with Attention deficit disorder (ADD) is distractibility, hyperactivity and impulsivity. A child in this condition finds it difficult to perform an assigned task and lacks the ability to focus on important aspects. They may even be not able to complete the task as they move quickly from one given activity to another due to distractions caused by external environment.

Another symptom that can be observed is Inattention and forgetful behavior. A child suffering from ADD will find it extremely difficult to sustain attention in performing any task and even display inattentiveness when spoken directly to. This condition makes a sufferer forgetful even about daily repetitive activities.

Other symptoms include- Frequent daydreaming, difficulty in understanding and following instructions, fidgeting hands and feet, squirming in seat, and difficulty in remaining at one position, talking excessively, behaving aggressively and being restless all the time. Short term memory loss is also one of the symptoms of ADHD.


Attention Deficit Disorder can be treated with therapy, medication or a combination of both. Studies have however proved that treating this disorder with both is more effective. A treatment strongly recommended for curing Attention Deficit Disorder is Homeopathy. It is very effective in improving concentration and attention span. I can only presume that other categories are similarly cluttered with unrelated, miscategorized questions. How can the Yahoo Questions community work to solve this problem? Or do you teeny boppers out there care?

5 Back to School Lunch Ideas

Lunch #1: BBQ Chicken for Champions

  • One chicken breast, cut in half and pan fried in olive oil for 6 minutes a side.
  • Add salt and pepper. Cut into strips. Serve cold dipped in dipping sauce.
  • BBQ dipping sauce — ¼ C (put in BPA-Free container)
  • Veggies: steam broccoli for 7 minutes, run cold water over it (or defrost frozen broccoli)
  • Place in BPA-Free container
  • Veggie dipping sauce in BPA-free container



Use: BBQ sauce or honey
Drink: water, GFCF* V8 juice, GFCF juice box, fortified organic rice milk box
Snack if needed: GFCF chips & fruity salsa (¼ C) in BPA-free container
Toy Surprise: Girls: yarn bracelet, Boys: Miniature toy character figure

BBQ Sipping Sauce — ¼ C (put in BPA-Free container)

  • 1 C organic ketchup
  • 1 Tbs lemon
  • 1 tsp Worchestershire sauce (GFCF)

  • Blend all of the above until smooth



Fruity Salsa

  • Turkey or Chicken GFCF Preservative-free organic lunch meats (by Boar’s Head, Applegate or Shelton)
  • Toast 2 pieces of GFCF bread.
  • Spread w/ 1 Tbs GFCF mayonnaise
  • Place 2 slices of GFCF lunch meat
  • Top with lettuce and tomato
  • Cut into 4 squares
  • Wrap in wax paper



GFCF Potato Salad 1/3 cup from recipe. Serve in BPA-Free container
Fruit (apple or grapes) — in BPA-Free container
Drink: water, GFCF V8 juice, GFCF juice box, fortified organic rice milk box
Toy Surprise: Hair scrunchie for girl. Baseball card for a boy.
Snack if needed: Peanut butter on rice crackers

GFCF Potato Salad

  • 3 pounds potatoes, cooked until just tender, cubed, cooled
  • Optional: 5 or 6 hard cooked eggs, cooled, coarsely chopped
  • ¼ to ½ cup chopped red onion
  • ¼ to ½ cup chopped celery, optional




  • ¾ cup mayonnaise
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons prepared GFCF mustard
  • salt and pepper to taste



Prepare the dressing combining the mayonnaise, mustard, and salt and pepper to taste. Combine.
Combine potatoes, egg, onions, and celery and stir in the dressing.
Serves 6 to 8.

Lunch # 3 Kids Favorite Chicken Salad & Deviled Eggs

Chicken Salad 1/3 to ½ C served in BPA-Free container
Deviled eggs (1-2) — served in BPA-Free container
Carrot sticks (wrapped in waxed paper) dipped in applesauce (in BPA-Free Container)
Snack if needed: GFCF chips & hummus in BPA-free container

Drink: water, GFCF V8 juice, GFCF juice box, fortified organic rice milk box

Chicken Salad

  • 3 cups cooked diced chicken
  • 2 ribs celery, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup seedless green grapes, halved
  • ¾ cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons finely minced green onions
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • ¼ teaspoon ground ginger
  • salt and pepper, to taste



Combine first chicken, celery, and grapes in a large bowl; set aside. In a small bowl, whisk together remaining ingredients; combine with chicken mixture, using as much or as little as necessary to moisten as desired. You may add a little more mayonnaise if you like a creamier salad. Chill and stir again before serving.
Serves 4 to 6.

Deviled Egg Recipe

  • 6 hard-cooked eggs — cooled, shelled, cut in half, yolk removed
  • 1 ½ tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 1 teaspoon prepared mustard
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons sweet pickle relish, or to taste
  • Paprika



Mash yolks and combine with mayonnaise, mustard, salt, and relish. Refill centers of the egg whites with the mixture. Garnish with ground paprika.
Serves 6 (2 halves per person)

Lunch # 4 Meatball Spaghetti Sauce

Meatballs in Spaghetti Sauce (1 C) without the spaghetti — served warm in thermos
Wonderful Waldorf Salad: 1/3 to ½ cup
Broccoli trees, cold asparagus or carrot strips dipped in Russian Dressing or honey ( ¼ C in BPA-Free Container)
Snack: Organic GFCF “O”s
Fruit smoothie ½ to ¾ C in cold thermos or GFCF V8 juice, GFCF juice box, fortified organic rice milk box
Snack if needed: GFCF chips & bean dip in BPA-free container
Toy: Stickers appropriate to the child

Spaghetti and Meatballs

  • 1 small yellow onion
  • 1 slice GFCF rice bread
  • 2 Tbs water
  • 1 teas salt
  • ½ teas oregano
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 2 jars GFCF pasta sauce



Put onion in food processor and mince. Add bread, water, salt, and oregano and mix again. Pour mixture into a mixing bowl. Knead by hand together with ground beef until thoroughly mixed. Shape into desired meatball size. Put meatballs into a slow cooked with spaghetti sauce and cook for 4 hours. Refrigerate.
Serves: 4 to 6

Wonderful Waldorf Salad Recipe

  • 1 C pineapple chunks (fresh or unsweetened canned)
  • 3 C apples, peeled and cute in ½ inch cubes
  • 1/3 C raisins
  • 1 C carrots, thinly sliced
  • 1/3 – ½ c walnut pieces (optional)
  • 1 C GFCF mayonnaise



Fruit Smoothie

  • 1 ¼ C rice milk
  • ½ glass crushed ice
  • 1 Tbs rice powder
  • 1 Tbs coconut milk (optional)



Add one of the following and blend at high speed until smooth and thick.

  • 1 sliced banana
  • 1 cored and chopped pear
  • 1 handful of berries (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries or combination



Russian Dressing

  • 1 C GFCF mayonnaise
  • 1 C GFCF ketchup



Servings: 8

Lunch #5 Chicken & Magical Muffins

Baked or grilled chicken (leftovers from dinner) ½ cold chicken breast
Apple salad served in cold thermos
Veggie-Muffins 1-2
Fruit smoothie ½ to ¾ C in cold thermos or GFCF V8 juice, GFCF juice box,
fortified organic rice milk box
Snack if needed: Carrots & bean dip in BPA-free container

Apple Salad

  • 2 large Red delicious apples, unpeeled, cored and but into 1 inch chunks
  • 2/3 C crushed pineapple, drained or fresh pineapple minced – reserve juice
  • 1/3 C celery, diced
  • 2 Tbs raisins




  • 3 Tbs soy yogurt
  • 2 teaspoons GFCF mayonnaise
  • 1 Tbs pineapple juice
  • ¹/8 Teaspoon cinnamon



In a medium bowl, combine the salad ingredients. In a small bowl, combine the dressing ingredients, Pour the dressing over the fruit mixture and stir.

Veggie- Muffins

  • 1 store-bought GFCF cake mix prepared according to package directions- but not baked
  • Add 1 C pureed vegetables — using one or more of the following: carrots, squash, peas, green beans
  • Add ½ C applesauce to batter
  • Option — stir in 1 C GFCF chocolate chips



Mix purees in with the batter, stir in chocolate chips (optional). Transfer the mixture to a muffin pan, filling each cup about two-thirds of the way. Bake at 375º F for 20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center of a muffin comes out clean. Do not overcook, as this will result in dry muffins. Once cooled, these muffins can be frozen to be eaten later.
Yields 12 muffins

Lunch # 6 Sensory Sensible (for those who avoid “lumps and bumps”)

Pot Pie Muffins (2)
Fruit smoothie
Snack: Bean dip

Parenting Children With Aspergers – Parenting Aspergers

Children who have been diagnosed to have Asperger’s syndrome are very different from the other kids their age especially on the way they think and function. Parenting children with aspergers, oftentimes, require special attention and coaching in order to be able to function more successfully in their school and home environments as well. There are therapies that are specially designed that may help the child learn to function more effectively and harmoniously with others. These therapies include special education services, behavior therapy, speech therapy, and physical or occupational therapy. In addition to these, training and counseling for parents and other family members may also be helpful.

As of today, there are no specific medications that can be used to treat Aspergers syndrome. However, if a child suffers from anxiety, depression, hyperactivity, or obsessive-compulsive disorder as a result of Asperger’s syndrome, this kid may benefit from medication to help with these symptoms. Once medications are prescribed, make it a point to monitor the child by his or her health care provider at regular intervals all throughout the Aspergers syndrome treatment.

There are drugs such as fluoxetine that may be prescribed in order to treat depression. Take into account that it is very vital for parents to work closely with the child’s health care provider and to completely understand how to monitor the child for side effects of these anti depressant medications. Take note that in some children and teenagers, these medications may increase the tendency of suicidal thoughts and actions.

Parenting children with aspergers also needs to take advantage of their child’s strengths by encouraging them to explore interests at home and at school. It may also be helpful to participate in different activity oriented groups and focused counseling. Being able to find the right program for your child is very important.

The Cause of Adhd May be Closer Than You Think

The cause of ADHD in your child can be traced back to the family. The condition is genetically based, which in simple terms, means your child may have inherited some of your nervous system genes. Even though conditions at home or school can contribute to it, they are not considered ADHD causes.

There have been many scientific studies that link physiological attributes to the cause of ADHD. These include gene makeup, absorbing toxic ingredients, trauma to the brain, and reactions to some food additives.

* The makeup of your genes:

Look at other members of your family. Did you know that even though three to five percent of kids are diagnosed with ADHD, twenty five percent of an ADHD child’s relatives will also have the condition. Scientific studies have even revealed the specific genes that have been linked to the cause of ADHD!

 * Toxic ingredients:

If you consumed alcohol or used tobacco products while you were pregnant, and you have an ADHD child, studies have indicated a possible link. A  fetus will absorb these toxic substances which certainly can’t be good. If your child has been around building structures that are old, he may have been exposed to lead poisoning. Some of these toxic ingredients have been labeled as potential ADHD causes. When I was growing up on a farm, my Dad exposed me to DDT which is now banned in the USA. Maybe that contributed to my ADHD, and then my son’s.

 * Brain trauma:

Most kids, thankfully, don’t fall into this category, but certain types of brain trauma can bring on ADHD symptoms. Scientific studies have shown that when an ADHD child and a NON-ADHD child had brain scans, or an MRI, there were some differences in certain areas of the brain. This would seem to show that the brain has something to do with the cause of ADHD.

 * Food additives:

About ten percent of ADHD children show reduced symptoms when their sugar and additive intake have been reduced. Now here is somewhat of a surprise. While most of us, including me, tend to associate sugar with hyperactivity, there was no difference when kids were given either sugar or a sugar substitute. That means that sugar doesn’t play a role in ADHD symptoms.

However, since a lot of people have it in their heads that sugar causes ADHD symptoms, they may see more symptoms after a child has some sugar. Studies show that parents who believe that their kids have been given sugar (when they have actually been given a substitute) are just as likely to say that ADHD symptoms have worsened as parents of children who are given actual sugar.

But even if it is only perceived, a reduction in sugar intake (or high fructose) can only be beneficial.

A very recent study has found that preservatives and food coloring, which can be found in soft drinks and junk food, greatly increase hyperactivity in children. So make sure you watch what they are putting into their bodies.

Remember, ADHD causes children to behave in unsatisfactory ways, but it doesn’t have to be this way. It is a highly treatable condition. There are prescription drugs that are effective for the symptoms, natural remedies which attack the root of the condition, dietary control, and behavioral therapy. Do your research and then do what is in your child’s best interest.

Can anyone tell me the reason why adderal is not available here in the republic of ireland for adhd?

They choose not to use it for treatment of ADHD. Sucks yup but you gotta deal with it. I’m quite sure they prescribe methylphenidate for ADHD (ritalin) in ireland.

Examining Drugs for ‘adhd’

The Eli Lilly company has been marketing a new drug for those who are labeled as ADHD known as Strattera. This drug is purported to be a non-stimulant medication, however the side effects are similar. Rather than effecting the dopamine system as do the stimulants such as methylphenidate and dextroamphetamine, it works upon the norepinephrine neurotransmitter. Strattera is considered a Norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor. Norepinephrine is the brain’s adrenalin. Norephinephrine is involved in the increased rate and force of the heart muscle, constriction of heart muscles, pulmonary function (Hedaya, 1999).

If these functions are increased, it would be evident that Strattera could produce possible untoward effects on the cardiovascular system. It is interesting to note that in the safety information that Eli Lilly provides on its website, it refers to possible hazards to those who have heart disease or high blood pressure. Information provided by Eli Lilly accompanying prescriptions of this drug note the possibility of tachycardia, and increased blood pressure. Tourette’s disorder, though the etiology is not fully known is being examined as difficulties arising in the metabolism of dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine. it is known that stimulant drugs can produce Tourette’s like behavior in some children (Breggin, 1998).

If Strattera affects the norepinephrine system, then it would seem evident that the possibility of such Tourette’s like behavior could also become manifest in some children using Strattera. Therefore, though Strattera is being marketed in the fashion of being a non-stimulant drug, its ill effects are quite similar to that manifested by the stimulant medications. Eli Lilly’s website notes that growth suppression is a common side effect and needs to be monitored in children making use of this drug. Loss of appetitite and weight loss is also seen. The most common side effects as listed by Lilly are upset stomach, decreased appetite, nausea and vomiting, dizziness, tiredness, and mood swings. These are not unlike that associated with the stimulant medications.

Lilly states in its press release in regards to Strattera’s introduction: “It’s not known precisely how Strattera reduces ADHD symptoms. Scientists believe it works by blocking or slowing reabsorption of norepinephrine, a brain chemical considered important in regulating attention, impulsivity and activity levels. This keeps more norepinephrine at work in the tiny spaces between neurons in the brain.” If we examine this statement carefully, we see it states ‘it is not precisely known’, therefore once again a drug is being prescribed whose effects are not fully known for a’disorder’ whose psychopathology is not yet delineated. Clinical trials for Strattera have been limited and any information on long term effects has only been studied by Lilly itself. It is interesting to note that before Strattera was actually placed on the market and had just received FDA approval that the stocks for Eli Lilly rose 6% at the announcement (CBS Marketwatch, November 27, 2002). Lilly is aware that it will profit highly by being able to market a drug as a non-stimulant (though its ill effects are similar), that is not a Schedule II drug thus less subject to scrutiny and regulation. Hemant K. Shah, an independent analyst qouted in an AP Health News Report (August 15, 2002) states that Strattera’s market potential is large at a time when Eli Lilly is seeking to offset recent setbacks. , “Parents who have refused stimulant dangers because of their knowledge of the hazards involved will now be coerced to utilize Strattera being led to believe it is somehow safer because it does not fall into the category of a stimulant/ Schedule II drug.

There is no test for ADHD and neurological testing shows these children to be perfectly normal. Dr. William Carey of Children’s Hospital in Philadelphia states, “common assumptions about ADHD include that it is clearly distinguishable from normal behavior, constitutes a neurodevelopmental (brain) disability, is relatively uninfluenced by the environment (home, school)…all of these assumptions…must be challenged because of the lack of empirical support and the strength of contrary evidence…what is now described in the US as ADHD is a set of normal behavioral variations. This discrepancy leaves the validity (of ADHD) in doubt.” The U.S. National Institutes of Health Consensus Development Conference on ADHD in 1998 reported, ” we have do not have an independent, valid test for ADHD, and there are no data to indicate that ADHD is due to a brain malfunction…and finally, after years of clinical research and experience with ADHD, our knowledge about the cause or causes of ADHD remains speculative.” Further, Dr. Edward C. Hamlyn, a founding member of the Royal College of General Practitioners in 1998 stated, “ADHD is fraud intended to justify starting children on a life of drug addiction.” The U.S. Surgeon General Report declares, “the exact etiology of ADHD is unknown.” Lastly, Dr. Joe Kosterich, Federal Chair of the Australian Medical Association states, ” “The diagnosis of ADD is entirely subjective…. There is no test. It is just down to interpretation.

Maybe a child blurts out in class or doesn’t sit still. The lines between an ADD sufferer and a healthy exuberant kid can be very blurred.” What we are experiencing are children in conflict. We cannot blame and denigrate the child and not respect his dignity. We cannot label and suppress behaviors. If a child is conflict, we must take responsibility to see why this child is in conflict and to use responsible and carefully planned interventions to aid this child in being successful. Some believe that they see enormous benefits from children on medication. I will give them this benefit, only if we see suppression of behavior, basically chemical restraint, and the creation of zombies as our idea of ‘progress’ or ‘success’. But once again, we are taking normal children and drugging them to suppress their behaviors. In order to achieve such a ‘result’, just what is going on in this child’s body? Stanley I. Greenspan, a clinical professor of psychiatry at George Washington University states that, ” The growing use of medication on their own is a worrisome trend while more and more people on Prozac or Ritalin are becoming bolder and less distractible, at the same time, more and more people are altering their moods without understanding what is happening to them or how it relates to their core personalities.”

He also states, “given appropriate nurturing, many affected children may not require medication.” University of South Florida Professor of Psychology, Diane McGuinness comments, “The first factor of being put on drugs is to attribute your bad behavior to factors beyond your control. Drugs become a substitute for learning self-discipline. This problem is compounded when children are taken off medication and problem behavior initially rebounds to fantastic proportions. Second, longitudinal studies have confirmed that children on drugs actually deteriorate in academic performance over time. And we must consider the sense of worthlessness most of these young people experience. (McGuinness, 1985). Paul Wender, M.D. lists criteria when beginning medication, he states that a child must first understand why he is receiving medication, yet as Greenspan states above, this isn’t always happening. Wender states, “Most acknowledge problems in his own behavior that he himself does not like, so that -he will not feel that medicine is being given to him simply so that other people can tolerate him more.” Now, Wender is one who began the first tests on the use of methylphenidate and is in support of its use in treatment.

I have had instances of being kicked, and even bitten by children going through behavioral difficulties, but at the same time, I found methods to help a child be able to deal with behaviors and to have progress while at the same time encouraging the child’s own responsibility and sovereignty, and working on the creative strengths of the child. Greenspan comments, “working with the strengths of a child can create motivation.” A child needs to be able to recognize and be motivated to change behaviors and work on strengths. Even Wender states that getting a child to ‘label’ behaviors is effective, that a child must recognize what is appropriate and what is not, and that parents should not encourage the idea that because the medication was wearing off or so forth that such excuses a level of knowledge and responsibility for certain behaviors. In my experiences, I would argue that a child often has complete knowledge of some of his or her behaviors and may develop a manipulative manner and ‘test’ the parent and find various triggers and weaknesses where he the parent will give in to his immediate desire. My concern lies too in that whereas some may feel medication to create some responsive in level of focus and so forth, it comes with a cost in side effects. Some may take the view that the potential for progress outweighs the potential side effects.

This is where I disagree, and feel it better to avoid that which would cause any side effects, that psychotherapy alone can manage the difficulties. These are some of the things that bring alarm to me. Wender states, “Most common side effects of the stimulant medications are appetite loss…difficulty in falling asleep.” He suggests the use of a small dose of sedative ‘major tranquilizer’ an hour before bedtime to solve this in some cases. So, here a see a cycle of drugs needing to be used and that’s worrisome. Wender states, “Research is being conducted to determine the -exact- effects of stimulant medication on growth.” This tells me they are prescribing something, which they really do not know yet what the effects are on growth. He states as well that stimulant medication IS addictive in adults, but says, “The results suggest that there is no increased risk for drug abuse associated with treatment, although -more research is needed to rule this out conclusively.-” Here again, if it is addictive to adults, I ask, why not children too, and he says that research is yet conclusive. With effects on the cardiovascular system, Barkley states, “studies have -not- specifically addressed this important issue.” So, they are prescribing something for which they are unsure of the effects on growth as well as the cardiovascular system.

Barkley states as well, “The side effect that should receive serious attention from clinicians is the possible increase in motor or vocal tics produced by stimulant medication.” He continues- “It still seems prudent to screen children with ADHD adequately for a personal or family history of tics or Tourette’s Syndrome.” I recall having a session with a child with the mother first and being informed that he was being treated with Ritalin, I later had subsequent time with the father, and he had visible tics, this really alarmed me in reading about the issue of tics and Tourette’s and I had to question not to the family but within myself if this was really the best option for the child faced with this risk. Barkley also states, “Isolated cases may arise in which parents note that a child is no longer ‘spontaneous’ or childlike in his or her behavior and appears -controlled- or -socially aloof-. This is concerning, and it appears that stimulants do have an affect in gaining control and conformity. Many of the stated results of the stimulant medication are too subjective, and Barkley states clearly that, “an improved ability to master increasingly difficult or higher-level academic material, such as that assessed in achievement tests, has -not- been demonstrated.

Here we have an example that it would not have been as a result of stimulant medication if we see academic progress. Barkley also says that ‘low and moderate doses of methylphenidate do reduce the frequency of aggression and noncompliance in groups of children but have no appreciate effect on either direction on prosocial or nonsocial behaviors.” So, I will acknowledge that stimulants can help with short-term behavioral inhibition, but what about long term? This is my main concern, with the side effects and without evidence of a long-term result and without knowledge of long-term results on growth and cardiovascular development, is this really the best option? Barkley states, ” Few studies employing rigorous methodology have evaluated the long term efficacy of stimulant medication. Those that have examined the issue have generally found little advantage of medication over no medication when evaluated over extended periods (Pelham, 1985, Weiss & Hechtman, 1993) Children who had been on drugs but were off at the time of follow-up were not found to differ in any important respect from those who had never received pharmacotherapy.”

Another concern is the effects in mood, I worked with one child who was already experiencing social withdrawal and was going through the trauma of losing a loved one. After receiving stimulant medication, this intensified. Wender states, “Instead of becoming high or excited, these drugs in general calm down ADHD children and sometimes they may even become somewhat sad.” Barkley states, “some children may evidence various mild negative moods or emotions in reaction to stimulants…Some children describe feeling ‘funny’, ‘different’ or dizzy as a function of medication.” What about self-esteem and confidence, Greenspan acknowledges that creativity can be affected, and Barkley states, ” some concern has been raised that diminished self-esteem could be a emanative effect of methylphenidate as children may attribute the source of their success while on medication to external rather than internal factors.”

What Are ADHD Assessment Tests?

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder remains one of the most misunderstood psychological conditions in existence. At one time, no such diagnosis of the condition existed. Common Drugs for Adhd May Cause Hallucinations- the Latest Fda Warning

Let us have a look at the latest offering from the FDA on common drugs for ADHD. First what are the drugs for ADHD? Dexadrine, Strattera, Ritalin, Adderall XR and Metadate, just to name a few. And the latest news is that the FDA has now warned that children on these ADHD drugs may have hallucinations about insects, snakes and worms crawling all over them! They found 850 cases of this latest horror in the ADHD drugs saga – actually that represents about 2% of the children taking these drugs. These are rather coyly referred to as hallucinations and ‘psychotic episodes’. One little girl actually fell down because she was convinced she had run into a brick wall. She had taken a 18 milligrams dose of one of the above drugs.

You can find this report in the ‘Pediatrics’ journal. As if that was not enough, there are reports of children on Strattera (one of the drugs incriminated above) having suicidal thoughts. Not surprising if they think worms are crawling all over them ! Now, when we realize that there are now millions of children in the USA alone on these drugs, about 8% on the latest count, then there is a case for a high alert to be issued. Especially when you add in the other side effects of these common drugs for ADHD, you begin to wonder what on earth are we doing to our children?

Stunted growth, weight loss and insomnia are high on the black list for these drugs. Now, while this may be in a minority of cases, it should be borne in mind that these pychostimulants are basically using amphetamines and they are acting on the neurochemicals of the brain and stimulating them. But when the stimulation wears off, the child ‘crashes’ and all sorts of problems of fatigue and listlessness start to come into play. Now if you, as a parent, think this is what childhood should be like, then maybe you should not be reading this article.

The warnings on these common drugs for ADHD state fairly and squarely that there is no known research on the long term development of children’s brains on these drugs. They warn of possible cardiac problems in those predisposed for heart problems and as well possible problems of stimulant abuse and that parents should make sure that their children are not selling the pills as drugs ! As stimulants fetch a good price on the drugs market (college students use them for studying all night!), parents should be extra vigilant.

My son is 6 1/2 and has had ADHD symptoms since he was 3. He has been to doctors and they all wanted to see if he would “grow out of it” or see how he was in school. Well he had not grown out of it, its only gotten worse. And now that he is in 1st grade, his teacher says “it couldnt get any worse” He is falling behind in school and getting bad grades. He is a very smart and well behaved kid, his teacher agrees, but his problem is disrupting his schooling. We have tried everything that we were suggested and found on the internet: play therapy, behavioral therapy, strict routine and limiting certain food intake. With none of those things working, we are taking him back to a doc and are seriously considering medication.

Oh, my, I feel your pain. I’ll give you a brief rundown, and then if you want more info, you can email me…

My son started displaying learning issues in pre-school. His first teacher immediately said “he needs meds”, which annoyed me to no end.

We ran the gamut of behavior mods, learning assistance, counseling, therapy, etc, etc, etc. He finally started getting better in the 7th grade, but then this year, regressed horribly.

I think I would have been OK with the problems with the learning (he’s a smart kid, but gets frustrated with the things he can’t do), but he started acting out again, hitting kids and becoming very impulsive.

Because of this, I decided to talk to my pediatrician, I was concerned that he had ODD. The dr. doesn’t think so, but we decided to put him on Strattera (a non-narcotic ADD med). He is 13 right now.

The turn around was amazing. He is a happy child again, he’s not angry all the time like he was before (some of which I could attribute to being a teenager, but this was way beyond the normal teenage angst).

I’ve noticed (as did he) that he was very tired when he was on the medication. We were trying to give it to him in the morning with breakfast, but he would get so tired at school, he could barely stay awake. Now he takes it with dinner. He needs to take it with food, as it was upsetting his stomach, but it isn’t a requirement to take it with food, it just helped him. He says he’s restless at night sometimes. He also tends to crash from it just before the next dose, which can be very frustrating, but once he takes his next pill, he’s back to a happy smiley kid again.

All I can say to you is you have a very difficult decision to make. 6 is young to start meds, but if you feel that all the behavior mods aren’t working, you can try. I waited as long as I possibly could, and I feel somewhat guilty about it. I wonder if he’d be happier overall (the issues made it difficult to make friends) had I started him earlier.

And remember, if the meds aren’t working, you can always try something different, or stop completely.

To parents of children or young adults with PDD-NOS?

My 5 year old twin girls have been diagnosed with pdd-nos (one with pdd and adhd) I was just wondering about other kids developmental time line. like when did they potty train and start talking correctly. and if you have older children what are they like now? or they able to function independently? I am just extremely curious about other autistic children because i have never met any other ones.

My 7 year old was diagnosed 2 years ago. Now his teachers barely notice that anything is going on. He is a little more sensitive emotionally than his classmates but thanks to meds and therapy he is really coming along great. I notice the autistic things more than anyone else it seems now because I am here all the time. I use to take care of children with Autism when I was younger working at a daycamp for special needs plus my stepbrother is autistic so I just knew my son was from the time he was just a few months old actually. His actual diagnosis is PDD-NOS possible Aspergers just another way of saying ok your child has a form of Autism. My son was walking at 9 months, saying some words at 18 months and really developmentally he did what he should in many departments but socially he was delayed and he was showing signs of Autism, bipolar disorder and ADHD. 2 years now of meds and therapy and he is very outgoing most of the time now and talks none stop usually but he is so sensitive and has anger spells (many autistic children and adults do, they can’t always control their emotions like they should). He is built stronger and bigger like many autistic children I have been around and that is most likely because the ones on meds, the meds make them gain weight. I would suggest looking for a special needs support group in your area. They are very helpful 🙂

All About Aspergers Syndrome

If your child has recently been diagnosed with Aspergers Syndrome, then you likely have more questions than answers about this little-known diagnosis.

This article presents answers to some of parents’ most common questions about Aspergers Syndrome.

What IS Aspergers Syndrome?

Aspergers Syndrome, named for Hans Asperger, an Austrian physician, is a milder form of autistic disorder. Both conditions are part of a larger group of neurological disorders known in the US as Pervasive Developmental Disorders, or PDD for short. The 2 most common symptoms are eccentric behavior and self-imposed social isolation. Sometimes speech is affected as well as gait and motor skills. Your child may also be exclusively focused on a particular area of interest, such as cars or astronomy. The social isolation comes from the child wanting to know everything about his or her area of interest and little else. Conversations are usually focused only on that area as well.

What causes Aspergers Syndrome?

Experts believe that Aspergers and autism have underlying biological causes, but are not clear yet on what those causes are. They do know that there are certain brain structure abnormalities, but do not know why they occur.

How are Aspergers Syndrome and autism different?

Aspergers usually begins later in childhood and has a more hopeful outlook. The child tends to function at a higher level with Aspergers too. Aspergers children tend to be clumsy, but overall have less neurological deficits than autistic children.

How does the doctor know for sure that my child has Aspergers Syndrome?

Diagnosis of most any mental/emotional disorder tends to be one of ruling out other conditions and noting certain patterns of behavior. There is no definitive test for Aspergers, but there are certain patterns, including:

  • Significant impairment in social interaction, as demonstrated by: – impaired nonverbal communication – failure to develop age-appropriate peer relationships – lack of shared enjoyment of activities/surroundings with others – unable to reciprocate socially and/or emotionally
  • Repeated patterns of behavior or interest, such as: – abnormal intensity of interest in one or two specific areas – rigid rituals that serve no functional purpose – repetitive mannerisms, such as hand or finger flapping – persistently preoccupied with parts of objects
  • Significant impairment in developmental areas of functioning (social, occupational and other areas)
  • No significant delay in language
  • No significant delay in cognitive development or learning of age-appropriate self-care skills

If your child meets one or more of the above criteria, then your doctor may suspect Aspergers.

Is my child crazy or mentally ill?

Aspergers Syndrome in and of itself is not a mental illness; it is a developmental disorder. However, it is fairly commonly associated with the following conditions:

  • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
  • Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD)
  • Depression
  • Bipolar Disorder
  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder
  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

How is Aspergers Syndrome treated?

There aren’t any treatments for Aspergers that will make it “go away.” However, by using a combination of approaches that address the three core symptoms of the disorder (poor communication skills, obsessive or repetitive routines and physical clumsiness); you can help your child live a fairly normal life. It’s also important to start treatment as early as possible. The treatment approaches your doctor recommends may include:

  • Psychotherapy
  • Parent education & training
  • Behavior modification
  • Social skills training
  • Educational interventions
  • Medications, such as stimulants, mood stabilizers, antidepressants, and SSRIs

Is there any cure for Aspergers Syndrome?

Unfortunately, there is no cure for this condition, and children do not “grow out” of it either. It is likely that your child will always find social situations and personal relationships to be challenging. But many adults with Aspergers are able to live healthy, productive lives, although they may always need support to do so.

What do I need to do as a parent of a child with Aspergers Syndrome?

The most important thing you can do is to get your child into a treatment regime early and then stick with it, even during the tough times. It will be worth it in the long run if you take steps to support your child’s progress and help him or her adjust and adapt. You can serve as case manager or coordinator, and try to involve all of your child’s caregivers in treatment as much as you can. You should teach your child self-help skills as he/she grows and develops. Look for treatment and educational programs that address your child’s problem areas. Get support for yourself too. You won’t be at your best with your child if you’re exhausted and frustrated.

The Two Sides Of Adhd Child Treatment

The help a child suffering from the ADHD condition needs, comes on two sides. One of them is represented by medication that helps controlling the physical impulses, skills, behavioral problems that could create problems in certain occasions. The second part of the treatment is counseling. Psychological help, therapy with a specialist is required. It will help the child overcome the emotional and mental issues that he finds hard to understand, helps the child to improve the self esteem and to see himself with different eyes, and, establish new relations and new methods of communicating and understanding with the parents. Parents, on the other hand, may need counseling too, in order to better understand the special needs of the child affected with the disorder and to establish new and proper ways of dealing and controlling the young one’s behavior. In very young children, most of the therapy is focused on the parents.

There are various types of therapies that need to be taken to make things easier for both the children and their families: psychotherapy, behavioral therapy, social skills training, support groups, parenting skills training. Each of these branches will help improve in different ways the life of a child and his family.

The support given by behavioral therapy is meant to help dealing with immediate issues and finding more effective ways on making changes. Sometimes it is better and easier to change things and feelings than to make them comprehensible. Practical assistance, helping organizing in daily tasks, schoolwork, homework, events that involve physical or emotional charges.

A better connection and communication can be established between child and parents with the help of support groups. A larger number of people sharing the same difficulties get together on a regular basis for discussions on the disorder topic. Everyone’s experience is gathered and conclusions may be drawn. In these groups one can find which method worked or helped improve another’s behavior, which failed, latest research in the matter, specialists are called for lectures and counseling. Social skills training will also help children learn new behaviors. This kind of training will help a child fit in a group of other children when playing, in school and other environments and interact with them. The purpose is to make them understand the signals that people around him are sending in order give an adequate response. It is based on theory, teaching a child to wait for his turn in a game, to share toys, to ask for help or to help others and practice.

The behavioral pattern of a child will change if the system of rewards and penalties is properly used, showing improvement. A parent or teacher should encourage good or desired behavior in a child suffering from the ADHD condition. Stimulation plays a very important part in the development of good patterns of behavior. Used often, tokens or rewards will stimulate the child in following the rules that are imposed to him. Importance must also be given to what those rewards represent because they must be things the child likes and desires, otherwise he may loose interest. Over time, the child will learn to control themselves and to choose the appropriate behavior for every situation he has to deal with.

A difficult situation for a child with ADHD is not an impossible task. The management and structure of every kind of problem must be given a great attention from the parents. Dividing tasks into smaller steps for example, could lead to its solving. A parent’s attitude towards his child will have a great effect so it is important for parents to get help too: Stress management, relaxation, exercise. These will help the parent dealing with the child’s problems and behavior more calmly.

Searching for a Parents ADHD Support Group?

I live in Washington in Kitsap County which is over on the Peninsula. I’ve tried desperately for this past year to find a Parent Support Group Meeting for parents of children with ADHD. We moved to this area 1 year ago this month and our daughter suffers from one of the worst forms of ADHD. This is very challenging for us as Parents because she is not an easy child to parent. I myself have already raise 3 other children who are all in their mid to late 20’s, but this is a first for my husband and he at times has trouble understanding why our daughter doesn’t act like we did at her age. The doctor’s have told us that with the type of ADHD she suffers from even though she is extremely smart acidemically she is much slower than the other children her age as far as behavior and her social skills are concerned. One of my sons also had ADHD but not as sever. We really could use some friends who are Parents in our situation. Were pretty much loners and a support grp. could help alot.
