adhd eeg

My son is 5 yrs. old. We are trying to get him evaluated for adhd. The doctor ordered an EEg and it came back?

an EEG and it came back abnormal. He has had no seizure activity but the EEG shows seizure activity. I don’t really understand. Can this be the reason for the EXTREME hyperactivity in my son. He’s getting kicked out of class everyday. I do’nt know what to do. Does anyone have any experience with this? Thanks so much!

ADHD is a controversial disorder. See, www.Cchrint.org/2009/09/15/no_more_adhd/, for a video with Dr. Mary Ann Block deploring the diagnosis of ADHD in children and giving them stimulant drugs. She suggests alternative treatment.

Good luck!

what are the similarities and differences between NLD and asperger’s syndrome?

what are the similarities and differences between NLD and ADHD?

Nonnverbal learning disorders (NLD) frequently manifest disturbances in spatial orientation, body image, facial recognition, visual-motor organization, social interaction, handwriting, mathematics and problem-solving abilities (Keller, 1998). The individual with a NLD exhibits superior language ability (left hemisphere performance), but weak nonverbal performance (right hemisphere performance). Hence the child with a NLD will be analytical, and gifted in understanding details, but unable to master the ‘whole picture’. Math and nonverbal activities are weak areas, as are social interactions, because the child is unable to utilize information from facial expressions or gestures. The NLD psychological profile is often confused with the Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) profile, as hyperactivity is a behavior seen in either disorder (Keller, 1998).

ADHD is a neurological disorder with hallmark symptoms of inattention, impulsivity and distractibility (Barkley, 1990). Children with ADHD manifest poor handwriting, weak expressive language skills, weak sequencing ability, require repetition with directions, act as if they have a hearing loss, display low tolerance to noise, misunderstand the spoken message, and weak reading comprehension skills (Barkley, 1990). Individuals with ADHD are at risk for auditory processing disorders (APD) in the areas of Tolerance-Fading Memory (TFM) and Organization categories (Katz and Smith, 1991; Keller, 1998).

For a lot of sites with information try a Yahoo search for “NLD and ADHD”

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Preschool

Monday, September 19th, 2011

attention deficit hyperactivity disorder preschool

What are the symptoms of ADHD?

if you dont know why dont you awnser?

Symptoms
The symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) may include:

Inattention, which is having a short attention span and being easily distracted.
Impulsivity, which can cause a person to do dangerous or unwise things without thinking about the consequences.
Hyperactivity, which is inappropriate or excessive activity.
These symptoms affect people in all age groups who have ADHD. But typical behavior varies by age.

In preschool-age children, symptoms may be hard to identify. Normal behavior in young children periodically includes all of the major symptoms. ADHD is distinguished from normal behavior by the severity and consistency of symptoms.
Children between the ages of 6 and 12 usually show more obvious signs of ADHD than other age groups. School expectations can make symptoms more noticeable. For some children, school is the first setting where academic performance and socialization abilities are assessed. But it often is more difficult to detect ADHD when inattention is the primary symptom and the child is otherwise well-behaved. The presence of ADHD may be indicated by:
Low grades or test scores, including achievement tests.
Poor organization and study skills.
Socialization problems and feeling rejected by peers.
Dislike of school and frustration with school work.
Teens between the ages of 13 and 18 may be in better control of disruptive behavior related to hyperactivity. Other problems that began in earlier years may continue or become worse when ADHD is not treated. Teens with inattention problems who previously managed to cope may start to fall behind in schoolwork. This is especially true when major changes occur, such as starting at a new school or going to college.
Symptoms of ADHD in adults may not be as noticeable. Many adults with ADHD have not been diagnosed and treated. They can develop problems such as depression and difficulty maintaining a job.
There are several other conditions with symptoms similar to ADHD. For example, sometimes bipolar disorder and ADHD can be confused. It can be difficult to determine whether symptoms are caused by ADHD, another condition, or both.

Adhd Meds and diet?

My son was diagnosed ADHD and ODD 2 years ago when he was 5. I am so sick of all these meds and side effects. I have been doing some research about a change in diet could help.
Has anyone done this before? How did it work out for you? I really want him off these meds. In addition he does get therapy to. I’m just so scared for my son’s safety. I have heard too many horror stories. And also his dr keeps prescribing these meds that have caused deaths (which I refuse to give him). Please I need some advice or even maybe some good links and references. Thank you in advance.

MY FAMILY LIVES ON THE FEINGOLD DIET. WE STARTED IT BECAUSE I AM ALLERGIC TO SALICYLATES. THE POSITIVE RESULTS IN MY KIDS IS JUST A BONUS. I HAVE LIVED WITH ADHD MY WHOLE LIFE AND THIS PROGRAM MAKES SO MUCH SENSE I WISH I HAD FOUND IT YEARS AGO. I REALLY THINK THAT I COULD HAVE AVOIDED NOT ONLY BEHAVIOR PROBLEMS BUT THE ONSLOT OF ALLERGY PROBLEMS I FACE TODAY!! CHECK IT OUT!

how do you deal with ADD/ADHD, personally?

I’m not asking for theories from people searching the web. I’m just asking for people who have been given this diagnosis to share their reflections about it. How has it affected you socially, mentally, physically, and educationally?

This would really help me, because I have it too. Yahoo answers is a weird place to find support, but everything is weird, so it doesn’t matter.

Being labeled ADHD freaked me out at first. I was embarrassed, wouldn’t take medicine, didn’t want anyone to know (like they didn’t know, LOL, I was probably the only one in the world that didn’t know), I felt ‘special’ in a not so special way!

I finally accepted it. I read alot about it and started to understand my behaviors. I realized I am not an airhead, dumb blonde. I don’t get mad at myself anymore when I am bouncing off the walls or forget something. I know how to help myself.

I feel funny about my meds because they are a narcotic. But if I have a lot to accomplish, I’ll take the whole dose that day. Most days I take 1/2 my prescribed dose. I feel calmer and organized with the medication. I can take on a task without feeling over-whelmed or quitting 3/4 of the way through. I can be working on something, leave the room to get something and actually return to my task with the thing I left to get. I guess that sounds crazy to a person without ADHD but I think you know that is a big deal.

I started telling people that I have ADHD and I was so surprised how many people I know with it. Ask around, you are not alone!

Adhd Definition Apa

ATT: Doctors: Are neurologists or psychiatrists more qualified to treat ADHD?

I am a patient with ADHD. I have read that the said disorder is both neurological and psychiatric in nature. I am curious to know the opinion of medical practitioners as regards which specialist is best qualified to treat the disorder.

Thanks in advance.
Edit: I see a psychiatrist for my ADHD and take Concerta. I was just wondering why it was psychiatrists that usually treat the disorder, given that its etiology is both functional and organic in nature? I do appreciate that its etiology is poorly understood but I was interested in the perspectives of health care providers, as the American Academy of Neurology lists ADHD as a neurological condition and the American Psychiatric Association includes it in the DSM.

Without question a psychiatrist is far more qualified to treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity
Disorder (ADHD).

The difference between neurology and psychiatry is somewhat arbitrary and there is a lot of overlap (eg., sleeping disorders are listed under psychiatry and neurology and both types of physicians can and do treat sleeping disorders and both types of doctors can sub specialize in sleep medicine.

Neurologists have a more objective focus on more tangible and physical aspects of the brain. Illness typically considered neurological can normally be measured and a diagnosis is more absolute (ie a diagnosis may be made from results of a blood test or MRI). Psychiatry deals primarily with illnesses of the mind which effect things like thought, perception, and emotion that typically don’t have well understood pathology. Psychiatric illness does involve physical disturbance/disruption in the brain (and many scientists consider the brain and mind to be one thing) and other things like genetics and hormones can have a major effect but also non physiological things can influence mental illness (eg., environment). In addition psychiatric illness is diagnosed based on clinical interview and observation- we don’t yet have the ability to make a diagnosis from something like a MRI (but we are getting closer). However part of the definition of a mental illness is that it “reflects an underlying psychobiological dysfunction.”

So if a disorder has a clear physiopathology it is typically considered neurological. Psychiatry works under a biopsychosocial model since psychiatric illness heavily influenced by biology, psychology, and social factors.

In the end there are certain things that have historically fallen under psychiatry and others under neurology and for the most part none of that has changed.

The International Classification of Diseases and Health Problems (ICD-10) by The World Health Organization (WHO) classifies ADHD under the “Mental and Behavioural Disorder” section (internationally the term “hyperkinetic disorders” is typically used instead of ADHD but they are the same thing). The ICD-10 is the definitive diagnostic guide except in psychiatry where the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) by The American Psychiatric Association (APA) is also widely used for the diagnosis of psychiatric disorders.

That is probably far more than you wanted to know but a psychiatrist is certainly the best choice to treat ADHD. Actually if you tried to make an appointment to see a neurologist for ADHD it is very likely the neurologist would not be willing to treat you since ADHD (more so than most psychiatric illness) is not something neurologists have specialized training to treat and most would refer to a psychiatrist. The same would happen if a person tried to see a psychiatrist to treat epilepsy, the psychiatrist would almost certainly refer to a neurologist.

How to help a compulsive liar?

I have recently figured out the root problem of my relationship problems: My boyfriend is a compulsive liar. He has all the symptoms, from ADHD, to addictions, to problems facing reality. I know that this is not an easy fix. How could I talk to him about it, and eventually work on it to get over it? I do not wish to simply break it off immediately. I want to try to work it out, and then end it if things do not change.
Edit: I want to fix him because he’s hurting out relationship, not for some other crazy reason.

Rule 1: You can’t change people.

Rule 2: You can’t change people.

Seriously, you can’t rid people of their personality disorders, all you can do is be there for them when they need it. You can suggest therapy to help him get better but he won’t ever change, not for you. He has to want to change himself.

99.99999% of the time, people don’t want to change themselves, especially not for others.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Myths

attention deficit hyperactivity disorder myths

Could I have ADD or AD/HD?

I never can pay attention in class and I always never do homework. I took an ADD and AD/HD quiz and I scored 55 on it. It said I should get tested.

I have had Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder ever since I was 6 years old. When you have it bad, you wouldn’t be taking quizzes to see if you have it. You would have already been put on medications a long time ago. That is only the case for people with a more serious case of ADHD. But there is a better possibility you might have ADD. That is the most commonly overlooked disorder. That is without the hyperactivity. The only difference with the two disorders is that with ADD, the symptoms all relate to multiple issues with focus and committing. With ADHD, it is the same thing as ADD, but with Hyperactivity as well. There are a great amount of students that have bad grades but people have to learn how to figure out which are the ones that choose to be lazy, and which are the ones that can’t help their lack of focus and interest. With ADD, you will have a problem with sticking to almost anything. Consistently, people with ADD suffer with finishing a task they start. Plus they constantly lose belongings. They don’t pay attention to where they are placing things which causes them to misplace things. And another large issue you would have with ADD: UNORGINIZATION. I mean…SERIOUS unorginization. And when you read something, you’re not actually interpreting it at all. You’re just reading the words but not REALLY understanding anything you are reading. This is from the serious lack of focus. ADD is a real disorder and it is a myth when it is said that people can overcome the disorder if they had some willpower. With ADD, the brain has a certain chemical management disability that impairs willpower and many other ADD related symptoms. So, if you have all of these symptoms and more, I strongly suggest you visit your doctor to discuss the possibility.

Adhd Food Coloring

adhd food coloring

Do you know where I can find information about diets for kids with ADHD?

I have been told by a few different people that my son may have ADHD. Before I consider medication for him I would like to try changing his diet. I have heard that eliminating preservatives, food coloring, and processed foods can help. Does anyone have anymore information on this? Thank you!

I am a 26 year old male, I grew up with severe ADHD. I failed miserably in school due to my lack of interest which lead to lack of concentration or care. I have overly excelled in anything I enjoy and put my mind to, but in getting older, started to realize that there are things I have to put up with in order to succeed in life. You can’t always do what you want all the time. I changed my diet to a low sugar diet, as well as eating more meats, vegetables, and I take a natural omega3 pill every day. The omega3 has been a HUGE help in my overall attentiveness. what these changes have done for me, is to get me into a mode of paying attention to my surroundings, bringing me that habit of paying attention. I keep taking my morning omega3 pill as well as eating healthy, and I feel much more comfortable and successful in life. with NO DRUGS! Before your son can go through his life altering mental changes of his own, you can definitely help him by changing his diet.

Another thing, is that people tend to see an ADHD child and want to keep him AWAY from caffeine. people with ADHD react in the opposite way to these things, whereas caffeine to adhd is a downer and will usually calm you down a focusable state. I drink my morning and afternoon coffee every day.

Anyway, these are just some ways I have dealt with my ADHD, and I feel I have been quite successful with them. Be more visual, less verbal lecturing. If he has homework to do for school, always, and I mean ALWAYS give him a place to get away from it for a few minutes, whether it’s a puzzle book, legos, etc…. Give him that option of “if you feel overwhelmed with your homework, you can have 5 minutes of legos, or puzzles, but you have to get back to your homework”. Guarantee he will eventually finish his homework all the way through without stopping. sounds weird but I promise.

Good luck!!! you’ve got a handful.

Adhd Treatment

adhd treatment

Can anyone shed some light on Adult ADHD? Which treatment is preferred – drugs or therapy?

What is your personal experience with ADHD?

It’s always difficult coming up with one-size-fits-all answers for ADHD questions. Because ADHD is not a one-size-fits-all condition.

First off, it is a syndrome. As with other medical syndromes (such as diabetes), symptoms are variable. In other words, ADHD can present differently among individuals who have it. Some have the hyperactive subtype, for example, and some the inattentive — very different symptoms. (Yet all subtypes respond to the stimulant medication.)

Second, symptoms can range in severity from mild to severe. For people who are on the mild end of the spectrum, awareness and compensatory strategies can sometimes help a great deal. Changes in diet (protein in the morning, a “Zone”-type diet, etc.), morning exercise, sufficient sleep, “externalizing” structure in the form of physical planning systems, organizational strategies, etc…..these can all help.

But when symptoms are moderate to severe, I agree with the previous responder (“thready,” I think it is, but the screen won’t let me check without losing my response!): Medication will be the foundation for any other strategies to take root. Adults who are late to the diagnosis often benefit from ADHD-focused therapy that helps them let go of counterproductive coping skills and develop more constructive ones.

It’s important to educate yourself first before pursuing an evaluation for ADHD or treatment. There is much misinformation on the Internet — and even in some clinicians’ offices. So, be a smart mental-health consumer.

You can learn more at the National Resource Center for ADHD: http://help4adhd.org/

I hope that helps,

Medicinal Cannabis Card?

I was wondering if I would pass a MMJ card interview (or whatever its called), I would be trying to get it for my lower back pain, ADHD, and anxiety. I was wondering exactly what I should say, if there was some “magic word” as when one is on trail for murder and say, “I was in fear for my life.” It turns out alright. I’m probably just being anxious but I would like to pass. If it helps I live in southern California.

To be honest I live in NYC, but I got family out in California, and from what I’ve learned you can pretty much just put on some hippie clothes and they are going to pass you, they make a ton of money off you people each year, so they are happy with you taking advantage of the law. As for the chick who said your just looking for a legal way to get high, if this was me asking I’d tell you your damn right, but you do realize marijuana has been PROVEN to relieve physical medial problems, and is a wonder for both ADHD and anxiety.

Even if this person’s personal situation is they just want to get high, how is this any of your problem? Do you, and must you have a problem with everything, or are you just against something that is 100% natural, less harmful then cigarettes and alcohol, and has been proven time and time again that it does in fact have meaningful medical purposes? If it is the latter, then you are no better then big brother, and who really likes our government?

I'm not familiar with the drug you mentioned. But my daughter has ADHD and a year ago, I took her out and try. adderall strattera and she did not make it better. It was not just. But a terrible pain in her abdomen. It does not seem to help much. Problems with attention / focus in her. Concerta and now she's back on. adderall adderall stronger. But it really works best for her. Everyone is different, but my son seems to be. I like to respond to the stimulation of his will is not clear cut, as well as his sister. You think I have ADD / ADHD?

I cannot concentrate on something special at school, I just want to space out and start thinking about random things about life. Also, I used to play football, and whenever the coach explained that I would not know how to practice and I did not pay attention, and even when I watch TV I can not pay attention to it. I then go to the doctor and I tested my mother had to fill out the form with a bunch of questions, and teacher of all I have to do the same. The thing is, I think your mom is not real, and their mental and She gets all her conclusions, as if "you will get good grades in your school, then just slide it out. !!!!" And she does not want me using drugs because she said it would make me. To be able to play the guitar and other drugs.i I taught myself to them. shes always like to add you if you have not been able to do that. What's your opinion?

I have increased the severity and my parents always told me that I should just suck it up and deal with it. "More attention and you will. OK ", but I will try really hard. Succeed.it but I still can not really affected my life and I wish my parents had gotten me to the doctor when I really needed it. When I was later treated as an adult, and it really helped a lot and explains. Many of the problems I have. I do not know if you have been added. You should explain to your mother that this is really serious and you should see a doctor just to be. Be safe, I think it is misleading to say that the increase will lead to other drugs. I will not do any other drugs. Ritalin, and even then I do not get caught. Ritalin, my doctor, I always try to get me to take more time. Go to the doctor and get treatment before you really need to find out more.

I’m thinking of entering Religion & Spirituality as a submission to DSM V?

Atheism to be diagnosed as apathy.

Christianity to be placed under Pyromania, seriously, what’s with all the fire? Eternal fiery torment, burning for Jesus…

Wicca to be placed under Social Anxiety Disorder. “My tradition is more traditional than yours,” and “Is this the RIGHT tradition?”

Buddhism is placed under Attachment Disorders.

Islam under Multiple Personality Disorder. “We are peaceful.” and “No we aren’t, infidels must die.”

Asatru/Druidry will be listed as ADHD type III. “Which god are we sacrificing to today?”

Fundies of all kinds will be listed under Narcissitic Personality Disorder and carry the comorbid diagnosis of Sociopathology.

Mental/Behavioral disorders aren’t funny, just the ridiculous manner in which psychologists try to define them.
Ah Fireball, that’s why we love you, you’re so…dependable.

I don’t think apathy is correct for atheists . IMHO that equates atheism with nihilism which really are two very different -isms. 4 1/2 stars out of 5 for the lol you so graciously provided.

I (seriously) fear for my mental health. Is this the sign of a slippery slope?

I have had a history of mild paranoia which I thought I beat. (Due to my past abuse) I don’t know if my ADHD or IBS are related but it’s additional information. Anyway, on the bus a man sitting in the front sit tells the bus driver to not let the people running for the bus on. He complies. This man keeps giving him instruction. And my mind thinks, this man is taking the passengers hostage. And I could not believe that I really got nervous as if it was true. I stopped myself in the middle and said this is ridiculous. I paid close attention and came to a more obvious conclusion. He was an MTA driver training a new worker. But for a good, 5 minutes, I honestly believed he was giving directions that were to be off the bus route and would be kidnapping us. Even as I type, it seems absurd.

I’m scared for a decline in my mental stability. Does it seem likely I could be heading that way?

You must have some preconceived notions about the world that makes you paranoid. I think some paranoia is OK as long as you balance it with reason and stay calm. I like to say paranoia is just a heightened state of awareness 😉

Is there much difference between Adderall and Desoxyn?

I’m going to be seeing my psychiatrist in a couple of days and I am going to ask about being put on one of these drugs for my social anxiety seeing as how the SRRI is not working. Also ever since she bumped up my dosage to 60mg of prozac I have had a huge increase in suicidal thoughts. Last time this happened it turned into psychosis with Celexa. So I have heard that using ADHD drugs can help with this and I’m wondering between the two is there much difference to what it does to you?

Wow. What a hard place to be in. I feel your anxiety.

SSRI’s became “the darlings” of psychiatry back in the early 90’s and have been so over prescribed and are causing so many problems with people, especially the increased anxiety and psychotic episodes that you have experienced.

Many times a person is misdiagnosed because, if you review the various illnesses such as ADD/ADHD, Anxiety, Depression, Bi-Polarism, PTSD; you will see that they have more in common than they do not.

And, even worse, many people have hormonal or nutritional imbalances that mimic mental illness.

So it is REALLY important to make sure that you have been properly tested and diagnosed before you just keep switching pills to treat the various side effects that arise from the pills. This is usually best done by really, honestly and thoroughly looking at your moods, behaviors, attitudes, patterns, coping skills, etc when you were a teenager, BEFORE you were taking any drugs (street or prescribed) for this is when the body is challenged with the mental emotional stresses of nearing adulthood and the physiological demands of maturing.

Here are some sites that offer some online testing that perhaps you can take, print out, then bring to your Psyche MD to discuss fully. Remember to think back to your teenage years when the questions ask about the past.
Remember, nobody wants any type of mental health disorder diagnosis, but it is better to be properly diagnosed and treated than to be treated for something that you don’t really have.

Natural Adhd Help

natural adhd help

I have a son who acts ADHD. We did not stick to him. meds, does anyone know a natural way to calm him?

He was only 5 and full of energy. Any natural remedies. It works. I need ideas or help. Super Nanny! So he did not go out and play and time to go out and play spanking does not work. He does not get brown and … Now what?

Hello, there is a difference between being "full of energy" and is ADHD. Either way, I agree with you that it is not the answer. Please check out Dr. Thomas. Phelan's 1-2-3 Magic is a great program. There are good books out there about natural remedies for children with ADHD. Often this can be a part of you that desperate for attention and lack of exercise. Exercise Try to be as positive as possible. Let's get him "a success" that you can mark down what he is good to brush each tooth,. Cat food, shut the door gently, and so on. This inconsistency can be difficult, so when these children. If you get into a routine and stick to it, he may resist at first. It is comfortable in his time. Some studies have suggested that ADHD children's behavior is bad by-products like wheat. I understand that there is no "magic cure". It is going to take time and patience, and Dedicated, but you can do it. It is a combination of a positive impact on the food and the experience and infrastructure. Please do not slap this child. It will encourage the "wildness". And it might spark violence. And try to focus on the positive, not negative. Taking what is deleted. How about. basketing all but his favorite toys and try to "catch him" a good man. When you catch him being good, you can let them choose toys that are different. …. Or a bag of stickers work well. You can print out "caught being good" certificate and start plastering. Wall with them, or at the front door to let everyone know what he was doing his so good! He wanted to get it positive instead of negative. …
