Why Herbal Remedies For ADHD Can Be More Effective Than Drugs

You may have heard about herbal remedies for ADHD. Perhaps you have also done some research. In this article, you will learn why some parents and professionals believe that these supplements are much more effective than drugs and what to look for in a good quality product.

An herbal ADHD remedy contains natural ingredients that reduce the symptoms of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, but what makes them different or even better than drugs? In order to answer this question, let’s first take a look at the pros and cons of prescription drugs.

Prescription drugs have been on the market for decades and new drugs are being developed all the time. You are probably most familiar with the stimulant, Ritalin, which is used to curb the symptoms of ADHD, and today, you can there are other stimulants as well as non-stimulating drugs. The idea behind using a stimulant to suppress symptoms like hyperactivity, impulsivity and aggression is that kids have paradoxical symptoms: what would increase these symptoms in adults works the opposite in kids.

While prescription drugs can be faster acting than herbal remedies for ADHD, they may not be nearly as effective in the long run when you consider all the negatives of giving your children drugs. First of all, drugs have side effects. Some kids are just more sensitive to them than others. Another important finding of long term studies is that ADHD drugs make some kids’ symptoms better, while it makes other kids much worse. If you’ve spent any time on ADHD forums, you know that you can usually find a parent worrying about how a prescription drug has increased her child’s symptoms. Of course, finally there are the concerns about addiction. After all, if you give your child drugs, you may be giving him a stimulant and stimulants can be addictive. There is also the concern that this sets up a pattern of coping with problems by using drugs. Of course the jury is still out on this one, but it is certainly something to think about.

By contrast, a good herbal ADHD remedy has none of these concerns. Yes, it might take a couple of weeks to build up in the system before you start seeing a reduction in symptoms, but when you learn about all the benefits of this type of treatment, you’ll realize that the wait is worth it. While drugs only suppress the symptoms, natural remedies actually give the brain the nutrients it needs to improve its function. Obviously, there are no concerns about addiction or side effects. If your child is currently taking a drug and you want to try a natural remedy, you can reduce the drug while adding a natural supplement without any drug interaction worries. Of course, you should always consult your physician when making a change in your child’s medication.

There are many ADHD natural supplements on the market today. Since you want to help your child get better fast before he gets even further behind in school and his social circle, you need to know that all supplements are not all created equal. To find a good formulation look for one that has been FDA-approved, has clinically proven ingredients such as Arsen Iod, Verta Alb and Tuberculinum and has a money back guarantee. Supplements that meet these guidelines are among the best, most effective herbal remedies for ADHD.

Realize that a good supplement is just part of a program to turn around Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. A sound diet, lots of fresh water, and daily exercise will boost the effectiveness of the supplement, getting your child quickly and firmly back on track and improving the quality of life for everyone in your family.

Herbal supplement for ADHD?

I have a 5 year old son who has been diagonosed with ADHD as of yesterday. The Dr. has prescribed Focalin XR 5mg once a day. I am stressing so much over giving him drugs. He is having a hard time concentrating in school and he may be held back if he doesn’t do better. I purchased a bottle of Focus Formula for ADHD and I REALLY want to try it,but I’m curious as to if anyone has tried an herbal remedy for ADHD. Anyone have any opinions??

* Herbal and Homeopathic Remedies - A number of parents have tried natural remedies as an alternative to psycho-stimulants and other drugs. Small trials have found some agents, such as oral flower essence, Ginkgo biloba, Panax ginseng, and melatonin may possibly have benefits for ADHD.

There are homeopathic remedies which effectively target some of the disruptive symptoms of ADHD and allow the child to concentrate more easily. Natural remedies should be considered as a first step ahead of prescription psychiatric drugs. When combined with strong dietary control, counseling as necessary, and a healthy lifestyle, natural remedies have been show to be effective in helping to alleviate the symptoms of ADHD.

* Dietary Approaches. A number of diets have been suggested for people with ADHD. Various studies have reported behavioral improvement with diets that restrict possible allergens in the diet.

u may want to discuss with their health care professional, homeopath, or naturopath regarding implementing an elimination diet of certain foods or adding supplements that might help. This is a very individualized approach and would differ from child to child. Always consult a nutritional expert before restricting the diet of any child.

* Feedback approaches. A technique that uses auditory (sound) feedback may prove to be an effective tool for increasing children’s attention.

* Neurofeedback. This technique uses electronic devices to help the child control their own brain wave activity.

* Interactive metronome and musical therapy. Feedback from sound is used to improve attention, motor control, and certain academic skills.

* Massage and relaxation techniques. Massage therapy can help ADHD children to feel more relaxed, fidget less, be less hyperactive, and focus on tasks. Other methods include reflexology, relaxation training, meditation, and music therapy.

Behavioral Therapy

For parents worried about over-medicating children who have attention problems, behavioral therapy may be a welcome addition to treatment. This type of therapy, carried out under the supervision of a psychologist, helps someone with ADHD alter their behavior and thought patterns to learn how to relate to others and succeed.

Other forms of treatment that may benefit the child with ADHD include:

* Social skills training. This can help a child with ADHD learn behaviors that will help them develop and maintain social relationships.

* Support groups and parenting skills training. Education and support for the parents can be an integral part of treating ADHD in children.
