Parents of children with ADHD are often a bit worried that their children will be considered inferior and may well not be successful in life. There is a great debate at the moment about whether ADHD is to be thought of as a gift or as a challenge. This was a very limited trial though, I must say.

Adult attention deficit disorders, on the other hand have had not much press at all and this is worrying. We all know the ADHD symptoms in a child. Did you know that between 1 and 2% of the adults in America have problems in controlling their impulses and have great difficulties in concentrating ? Very often symptoms in adults are difficult to spot. Have you noticed yourself (or colleagues) who are easily distracted, are notorious multi-taskers, get extremely irritated when driving, have difficulty in remembering details and also may have even hourly mood swings? They could well be suffering from ADHD but very often this will go undetected and undiagnosed.

Medications for attention deficit and/or hyperactivity still pose problems. Those with heart conditions are likely to suffer from related cardio problems and even have high blood pressure. Add to that that there is often a suppression of appetite and you have a cocktail which will probably create more problems for the patient than they solve.

Unfortunately most parents go for the “quick fix” and take the teachers / schools / doctors advice, and never even bother to check out diet or disciplinary options.

It’s sad for the kids, because they’ll never know any different, and will probably suffer the side effects in the future.

ADHD stands for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and it is a chronic condition that can have a great impact on a child if a child does not get help, or if the right ADHD treatment is not prescribed.

My 3 yr. old is being evaluated for ADHD, can someone please help ?

My 3 year old is being evaluated for AD-HD he just started preschool, and we’ve been referred to the psychologist to discuss his behavior, he has all the symptoms and I always had a gut feeling something was wrong. We are looking forward to behavior modification therapy in the next week and the school is going to wait until he turns 4 to refer him to a neurologist. He is in school from 8am-2pm, now the school is considering releasing him at 12pm because from 12pm-1pm they’re suppose to sleep or at least rest and he runs around and disturbs the other children who are resting and doesn’t want to sleep or sit still. I understand how this affects the other children and the teacher, but how is sending him home early going to benefit him? I understand how it’s going to benefit them but I’m confused should I tell them to keep him until 2pm and try to deal with him, are they just getting rid of the problem instead of helping I don’t know please help.

As an abuse survivor i feel i can not give an unbiased answer. I do have to voice that your information is wrong. I have been in therapy and counseling since 18 yrs. I was resigned to never have children from fear of abusing. I wanted more than anything for the abuse to end with me.

My counselor told me that 99% of women abused as a child never abuse children. In fact they are more protective of their children. With my counselors resounding approval and a second opinion did i finally decide to have children. At age 30.

I didn’t listen as closely to the male stats since it didn’t affect me. If i remember correctly the odds were higher for an abused man to end up abusing a child.

ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) is a common psychological disorder that often becomes perceptible once a child starts preschool. Having worked in a school for kids with low function and with behavioral problems there are some things that you can do, and some you can’t. Before you can do ANYTHING you have to collect facts.

First, is your main source of information from your child? If so, it is important to realize that many kids feel persecuted because they themselves think they are dumb and project that onto the teacher. It is important to listen to your child, but don’t make the mistake of only listening to them.

Next, bring up your concerns during the IEP meetings. These are to discuss the expected progress of your child and develop a reasonable plan of action for them. If you don’t attend these meetings then the communication failure is yours, not the teachers. I had a student that had the traits that you cite for your child, and the mother insisted that he could not perform beyond a certain level. It turned out when I encouraged the student he excelled. His mother was furious at first- until she discovered that her son was pretty much normal. He graduated with the highest grade average in the school.

No Child Left Behind has mandated that all children maintain certain levels throughout their school career. If the student is in a certain grade the curriculum doesn’t change, but the method of individualizing the lesson can which is what the IEP is all about. Instructors have different ways of individualizing, so rather than come to the teacher “half cocked”, ask them what kind of steps they have taken to individualize the lesson for your child. You have a right to see their lesson plans and specifics to your child.

Gossiping about students- many students might think that this is true, but I can assure you that in a SE setting the teachers work as a team and always look for better methods for each individual child. So, when your child suggests to you that they are “gossiping’ it is probably the sharing of information.

Bottom line is: a) don’t allow your anger and your lowered expectations be an excuse for your child’s performance; b) be active in the development of the individualization of lessons- call the teacher every day if you have to; c) expect that your child will have bad days and it will seem their world is coming to an end. On these days you’ll need to work through it, not just coddle him.

Who Can Diagnose ADHD?

A lot of parents have questions about who to consult when they suspect their child might have ADHD. Who can diagnose? Who can treat? What’s the difference between a psychiatrist and a psychologist?

Let’s start with the last one first. A psychologist is a non-medical therapist or counselor. This person may have a Ph.D. and be called “Dr.” but is not a physician.

A psychiatrist, on the other hand, is a physician and can prescribe medications.

Let’s talk about who can diagnose and what they can do.

Basically, five groups of people can diagnose ADHD.

To begin with, you might take your child to the pediatrician or family doctor. As a physician, he or she can diagnose ADHD and prescribe medication if needed, but would not provide counseling or training for dealing with ADHD.

You might be referred to a psychiatrist. As mentioned, a psychiatrist is a medical doctor specializing in psychiatric issues. A psychiatrist can diagnose ADHD, prescribe ADHD medications if needed, and might provide ADHD counseling or training.

A psychologist can also diagnose ADHD, and often does. Psychologists cannot prescribe medication, but do provide counseling or training for ADHD clients.

Clinical social workers, like psychologists, can diagnose ADHD and provide counseling, but cannot prescribe medication.

Neurologists may be the least common doctors seen for ADHD. They can diagnose and prescribe, but do not provide counseling or training.

In the end, it comes down to who you’re most comfortable with. Certainly it makes sense to begin with your child’s pediatrician and ask for a referral to a specialist who deals with ADHD if necessary.

How is Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (add/adhd) Diagnosed?

Assessing whether a certain individual is suffering from Attention Deficit with HYPERACTIVITY DISORDER or not is far harder than it appears to laymen like ourselves. This is because, not only does it’s symptoms largely overlap those of hyperthyroidism etc. they are also largely exhibited by ‘normal’ human beings some time or the other every single day. Therefore the first important step towards diagnosing the disease is to consult a trained health care provider regarding it. Thus diagnosis is now primarily based on the reports of those close to the patient, who see, talk, work or live with him/her everyday and have thereby come to know the patients habits closely. A number of people suffering from ADHD also realize their problem with time, especially as they grow older and consult doctors regarding it.

The guideline provided by the American Academy of pediatrics requires medical personnel to look into the child’s behavior in more than one place before reaching a conclusion regarding whether or not the child is suffering from ADD. Thus the doctor is expected to consult various ‘witnesses’ regarding the behavior of his patient in say his school, his home, at the playground, at his Grandma’s place etc. and thereby ensure that his diagnosis is not based on the child’s behavior at a certain specific place. This is to know for sure that the problem in hand is intrinsic and is consistent everywhere and not specifically due to some factors at a particular place. The guideline also requires the physician to use an “explicit criteria for the diagnosis using the DS-IV-TR”.

When approaching a doctor for cure therefore make sure that he/she follows these directions set by the Academy closely before diagnosing the problem. Remember a problem such as ADD/ADHD might not be as difficult to cure as is to diagnose, in fact proper diagnosis might be the first step towards a satisfactory cure. One doesn’t need a black cloud of doom and gloom over their or their families head. Start slow and with the professionals that you feel comfortable with. Doing something, even something small, it is still SOMETHING!

Problems And Challenges On How To Define ADHD

If you were to ask a doctor, paediatrician on the best way to define ADHD, you would probably get quite a few varied responses. There might be an ADHD definition as a mental disorder which should be treated as a mental illness and therefore the use of antipsychotic drugs would be perfectly acceptable. Nobody can agree or knows the cause of the disorder, the diagnosis is sometimes vague and the treatment of this condition has led to fierce arguments among child carers, teachers, parents and doctors.

One of the main problems is the actual diagnosis of this condition which is also why it is so hard to define ADHD! Brain scans on a massive scale are advocated by ADHD expert Dr. Amen. Others claim that there is no great difference in the brain scans of ADHD children and those of normal children. One doctor said that ‘diagnosis is a mess’. Once a diagnosis by a specialist has been made, then the next challenge begins about how ADHD should be treated and this very much depends on how the doctor wants to define ADHD. These will certainly reduce the symptoms of inattention, lack of focus but they will not teach the child self-control or how to modify his behavior in any way. The problem here is that this type of treatment has considerable health risks and seizures, heart attacks and psychotic episodes such as hallucinations and suicidal thoughts are not as rare as doctors would like us to believe. ADHD and dopamine?

why dont doctors do a blood test of the dopamine levels in people to diagnose ADHD* ?? they say that they dont know how to diagnose it but it simple, either do a blood test or a brain scan to check the dopamine levels and if the levels are low then its safe to assume adhd is present, am i not correct?

They do have the ability with nuclear medicine to “see” brain activity and can do diagnosis but those are very expensive and genuinely not needed as experienced psychotherapists can usually tell pretty quick with todays current evaluations.

My guess is that it could be a combination of four things:

1) Addictive personalities: I truly believe there are some people that for some reason would abuse chewing on pocket-lint if it tasted good once.

2) Ignorance: These teens do not understand medication and drugs and how they work and do what they do so they have no caution with them. They do not look up what it does to their system, how it works, what are the side effects and what are the withdrawal symptoms. Ask anyone taking a drug what LD50 is for that drug and see how many blank stares you get.

3) Monkey-See-Monkey-Do: They see someone else do this so they think it is OK for them to do it. This is immaturity.

4) No “Risk” system: I think I saw this on Dr. Phil that they mapped teenagers brains and the place we keep our adult “Risk” system hasn’t fully developed for them. In the past decade, prescriptions for Ritalin, a stimulant medication commonly used for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), increased five-fold, with 90 percent of all prescriptions worldwide consumed in the United States. As many parents grow leery of the traditional drug approach to ADHD, promising results with non-drug treatments that focus on postural stability, nutrition and lifestyle changes that affect brain activity are emerging. Some children may simply have difficulty learning certain subjects, but the current system, in a sense, prompts school officials to encourage their parents to have the children diagnosed with ADHD. The higher the number of disabled kids in the school, the more funding the school can apply for. Some teachers might also have difficulty with students who have a different style of learning. If the child is a visual learner and the teacher is not, perhaps the child is not being taught in a way he or she can learn from. Before diagnosing the child with ADHD, several questions need to be answered, such as is the child too active? Bored? Does the child suffer with dyslexia or a different learning pattern? It can be a behavior problem, problems at home, or frustrations with the teacher’s style. If we went to a conference where the speakers taught in a way we can’t learn, we would be frustrated and would misbehave, we’d get up and leave or chat to the person sitting next to us.

The traditional medical model, however, seems to follow the cookie-cutter principle. The diagnosis of ADHD is based on a questionnaire. But this is not enough. True ADHD patients have other signs, tics, tremors, balance or postural problems, or unusual sensitivity to touch, movement, sights, or sounds. Unfortunately, although medications can keep ADHD under control, they don’t cure it. Eighty percent of patients have ADHD features in adolescence, and up to 65 percent maintain them in adulthood.

Our office offers a non-drug and non-invasive integrative functional neurologic rehabilitative treatment alternative for ADHD patients that targets the underlying problems, not just symptoms. Motor activity, especially development of the postural muscles, is the baseline function of brain activity. Anything affecting postural muscles will influence brain development. Musculoskeletal imbalance will create imbalance of brain activity, and one part of the brain will develop faster than the other, and that’s what’s happening in ADHD patients.

Chiropractic neurologists are trained to identify the under-functioning part of the brain and find treatments to correct the problem, to help that hemisphere grow. On every patient, we perform a brain function exam. We test visual and auditory reflexes through, for example, flashing light in the eye, or asking patients to listen to music in one or the other ear. When the problem is identified, patients are placed on a treatment program, and most of the therapies can be done at home. Patients are asked to smell certain things several times a day … or wear special glasses. We also focus on their individual problems. Some children, for example, have difficulty with planning, organization, and coordination, so they benefit from timing therapies. They learn to clap or tap to the metronome, perform spinning and balancing exercises. Although currently no studies comparing chiropractic neurological and drug treatment for ADHD are available, chiropractic neurologists are compiling the data. We test children before they start the treatment and then every three months. Within the first three months, the children get a two grade level increase on average, which is pretty dramatic. With children on medications, the improvement in academic performance is short term and lasts only as long as they take the medication. Our programs change brain function and the improvement doesn’t go away.

Adults taking methylphenidate (Ritalin), NOT related to ADHD?

I had a golf-ball size non-functioning pituitary tumor removed 2 years ago. The only hormone I have become deficient in so far is growth hormone, which I am replacing with Humatrope. I thought that would be the answer to how lousy I was feeling but I am still extremely tired all the time, have no motivation, lack of interest, can’t concentrate at work, can’t remember anything; basically all the signs of what I’ve discovered is called “apathy syndrome”. The research I’ve done indicates that methylphenidate, or Ritalin, can help people like me get some function and quality of life back. I have found very little info on use in adults and would like to know if any adults out there have been on Ritalin (or a related drug) and if you know what the long-term effects and side effects are? I hate the thought of taking drugs but I hate feeling elderly at age 33 even more… I need to find an answer…

If I have ADHD, and Clinical Depression, anxiety attacks, and no appetite, what should I do?

I have been diagnosed with Clinical Depression, ADHD (and its pretty bad, I have to take 2 different medications, at max dosage and normally I’m at about 45% of where most people are). I’m prone to anxiety attacks. I have no appetite, I’m just never hungry, but its not like I can’t eat I do, when I remember. I do not like talking to psychiatrists or therapists because thats just who I am. I believe the mind is powerful though ,and that modern medicine is good for many things. Any suggestions on what to do. (Under 21 male)
OK I forgot a couple details. I have concerta, ritalin and prozac, and my doctor knows whats going on.
With no intention of any disrespect & just to clarify: I’ve had these problems with me for over 4 years, and i didn’t get any medication until 2 years ago (meds aren’t the problem). I’m not religious in any way, and can’t be convinced otherwise (again no disrespect).

I would go back to your doctor or a different one (just b/c someone is a doctor doesn’t always mean they should be) and ask about bipolar disorder. Bipolar mania is very similar to ADHD and you also have depression. Bipolar would occur in cycles, one week/month you feel scatter brained the next you are sad and fatigued. Also, being on ADHD meds while bipolar can cause severe anxiety essentially making the manic episodes worse like you describe. This is just a thought you might want to consider. I recommend looking for doctors until you find one you feel you can put up with and one you feel can really help you.

How Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Prescription Drug Abuse Affects You?

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a highly publicized childhood disorder that affects approximately 5 percent to 7 percent of all children. Millions of individuals receive prescription drugs for ADHD every year and various central nervous system (CNS) stimulants like Ritalin & Adderall are frequently prescribed by physicians for ADHD as they have a notably calming and “focusing” effect on those with ADHD, particularly children.

Ritalin, chemically known as Methylphenidate, is a stimulant that produces pharmacological effects similar to those of cocaine and amphetamines. As a result, a growing number of incidents of ADHD prescription medicine abuse have been associated with teens and young adults nowadays. Many teens are using it for weight reduction since it is a powerful appetite suppressant while others are using it for wakefulness, increased attentiveness, increased focus, & euphoria.

When abused, the tablets are either taken orally or crushed and snorted. Some abusers dissolve the tablets in water and inject the mixture into the veins. Users who inject drugs intravenously are at a higher risk of contracting viruses such as HIV and hepatitis, and often suffer from abscesses & collapsed veins as insoluble fillers in the tablets can block the small blood vessels. Moreover, excessive doses of Ritalin over a long period of time can produce addiction & may lead to development of tolerance so that larger doses are needed to produce the desired effect.

When a child’s performance and behavior improve soon after starting medication, the child, parents, and teachers tend to applaud the drug for causing the sudden changes. Unfortunately, when people see such immediate improvement, they often think medication is all that’s needed. But medications don’t cure ADHD; they only control the symptoms on the day they are taken. Although the medications help the child pay better attention and complete school work, they can’t increase knowledge or improve academic skills. The medications help the child to use those skills he or she already possesses. Its basic notion is that every organ dysfunction is accompanied by specific muscle weaknesses, which enable diseases to be diagnosed through muscle-testing procedures. Most practitioners are chiropractors, but naturopaths, bogus nutritionists, massage therapists, nurse practitioners, and multilevel distributors such as Nature’s Sunshine are also sometimes involved.

Aromatherapy
Aromatherapy is described by its proponents as the therapeutic use of the essential oils of plants. Subliminal Tapes
Thousands of videotapes and audiotapes purported to contain hidden repeated messages are being marketed with claims that they can help people to lose weight, stop smoking, enhance athletic performance, quit drinking, think creatively, raise their IQ, make friends, reduce pain, improve vision, restore hearing, cure acne, conquer fears, read faster, speak effectively, handle criticism, relieve depression, enlarge breasts, and do just about anything else. At least one company has offered a subliminal tape for children; a toilet-training tape for toddlers. Many tapes contain music said to promote relaxation, and all are claimed to contain messages that are inaudible or barely audible. Videotapes have the same concept; they may feature images, said to be relaxing, combined with repeated visual messages shown so briefly that they cannot be seen at normal playing speeds.

Body Wrapping
Salons and spas exist where clients supposedly can trim inches off the waist, hips, and thighs. These facilities use wraps or garments with or without special lotions or creams applied to the skin for their treatment. The garments may be applied to parts of the body or the entire body. Clients are assured that fat will “melt away” and they can lose several inches from the problem area. Some claim that wrapping works because cellulite is water-logged fatty tissue.

Ear Candling
Ear candling, also known as auricular candling or coning, refers to various procedures that involve placing a cone-shaped device in the ear canal and supposedly extracting earwax and other impurities with the help of smoke or a burning wick like a candle. The origins of this candling are obscure. Ancient Tibet, China, Egypt, the pre-Columbian Americas, and even the mythical city of Atlantis are cited as possible origins. The procedures supposedly create a low-level vacuum that draws wax and other debris out of the ear canal along with whatever the ailment is. Some proponents even claim that impurities are removed from the brain itself, which is somehow connected to the canal.

Coral Calcium
Coral calcium is alleged to be a dietary supplement said derived from “remnants of living coral that have fallen from coral reefs, as a result of wave action or other natural processes.” It is also said to be mined from the old ocean beds at the base of the coral reefs in Okinawa, Japan. Actually, these “coral remnants” are limestone, which coral organisms originally manufacture as a protective shell. Since coral reefs are protected by the law, “coral calcium” is made by grinding up limestone that no longer contains any live organisms.

The Feingold Diet
In 1973, Dr. Ben F. Feingold, Chief of Allergy at Kaiser Permanente in California, presented his findings that an allergy diet he was using (called the K-P Diet) also had the effect of improving a variety of psychiatric conditions including childhood hyperactivity.  The diet eliminated foods, medications, and toiletries containing artificial colors and flavors, certain preservatives, aspirin, and specific salicylate-containing foods.  Once the patient was doing better, the salicylates foods could be reintroduced one at a time, testing for tolerance.

While some of the early research did not agree with Dr. Feingold’s conclusions, all the research done in the past 20 years supports the use of this diet for hyperactivity.  The American Academy of Pediatrics, in their February 2008 issue of Grand Rounds, wrote that for ADHD, “a trial of a preservative-free, food coloring–free diet is a reasonable intervention.”

Since Dr. Feingold’s death in 1982, the non-profit Feingold Association of the United States carries on his work, providing information and help for people wanting to use this diet, now called the Feingold Program. 

Gerson Method
The proponents of the Gerson diet claim that cancer can be cured only by way of toxins being eliminated from the body. They recommend “detoxification” with frequent coffee enemas and a low-sodium diet that includes more than a gallon per day of juices made from fruits, vegetables, and raw calf’s liver. This method was developed by Max Gerson, a German-born physician who emigrated to America in 1936 and practiced in New York City until his death in 1959.

Let me try and answer this about ADHD first, and then a little about Aspergers. I want to do this because there is a lot of inaccurate information and myths being circulated about diet and ADHD.

First and foremost, you want to decrease the sugar intake your grandson gets. I am NOT suggesting you eliminate it - but you sort of watch his behavior and activity level, and adjust accordingly. If you think about it, all people are affected by sugar. It can make anyone appear more hyperactive.

Next, please know that a Gluten-Free diet will not cure ADHD or treat ADHD. If you were to follow this diet and see changes - then something else is happening or you are treating something else. And that is entirely possible because ADHD does not just occur alone.

Aspergers is not my area of expertise, but I believe I have heard that gluten-free diets have made a difference with Autism Spectrum conditions.

In terms of dyes and additives. This has long been speculated but research has been inconclusive. Of course that doesn’t mean there isn’t a direct correlation.

Best advice I can give on this is what they call an exclusion diet (I think that’s the term). You remove a bunch of foods or additives, and slowly introduce them very systematically. You watch changes in behavior very closely and see what impacts the individual person.

Most importantly, you want to focus on a healthy and balanced diet, particularly with protein in the morning. Protein will provide the body with good energy, whereas sugar provides a quick boost and then an energy crash as the sugar is turned to carbs.

One more thing - it has been suggested in the past that you might try a Feingold diet and others… Those largely do not work.

Your best bet is to talk with someone who specializes in ADHD and nutrition. But the easiest rule to live by is decrease sugar, increase protein (everything balanced of course).

No. And your question is biased as hell. Stop talking like its better to have ADHD than to not have it, just because something shouldn’t have a stigma doesn’t mean you should promote it as superior. But anyway I have known people with pretty sever ADHD who were quite happy and out going. It has absolutely nothing to do with whether or not their teachers and parents also had ADHD, avoiding feelings of frustration and low self-esteem issues just requires the condition to be recognized and for it to be addressed in the proper way for the specific person.

Methods of treating adult ADHD?

I know there are several prescription medications, like Adderall and Ritalin, but I really don’t want to be on a stimulant medication like that. Are there any non-stimulant medications?

I’m one of the few who think ADD is all because of a bad diet. Things like coke and red cordial etc give the same symptons on young children after eatting or drink these types of foods. So I tend to believe it has the same effect on ADD suffers but worse. So it’s a matter of just eating a bit more sensibility and stay away from processed foods.
What is known though that Omega 3 (fish oil) has had some positive effects on bipolar depression and ADD! So to me it sort of makes sense to eat a balanced meal. Take on that as you will.
