Is it possible to have ADHD and Aspergers Syndrome?

I’m 17 and have ADHD (mainly innatentive with some hyperactive and impulsive triats).
I used to have dysgraphia (a type of dyslexia involving problems with drawing and writing) but grew out of it.
I think i may have Aspergers as well as ADHD!!!
I was looking at symptoms of the disorder and it all adds up. I’m unsociable and have an higher than average IQ (138). I hate change and have a load of crazy obsessions…..BUT ANYWAY, i was just wondering how common it is to have both ADHD and aspergers together???
Like ADHD makes me unpridictable, creative, random, quirky and innatentive.
Aspergers makes you quiet, intelectual, spacific, routine, exact and unsociable.

It is possible to have both ADHD and Asperger’s syndrome. Having both is more common than you might think. I haven’t seen any statistics about how many people have both, but I know it’s not uncommon.

A little bit about me: I have had AD/HD for more than a decade now (15 years of age) and was diagnosed in the 8th grade several years back with ADHD and APD. I have seen various psychologists and tried Adderall/ Ritalin/ Concerta but they didnt work so I stopped after about a year of taking them. I’ve been doing a form of treatment called “biofeedback” (try google) which supposedly can “alter” your brain to focus on things better by repetitive practice rather than dependence on medication. So back to the questions. From my experience, AD/HD patients who DO get into behavior problems don’t do so because they ARE trying to be bad or break the rules, but that he/she can not control themselves as the environment and surroundings become increasingly more stressful. Again, I’m not a doc, but this is what I think from what I dealt with as a child.

School is a burden. I admit it, I hate it, I dread it. It’s no longer a question of how I can get through the school year, but how I can get through the period. 8 times a day, 7 times a week and 52 times a year. It’s painful. Imaging walking into a classroom and instead of being able to concentrate and focus on JUST the teacher, you focus on EVERYTHING; as if they were EXACTLY the same volume as the teacher. Its actually more complicated than this but it’s the best way I can visualize an answer.

People+ friends+ relationships+ family. All I can say is “impulsivity.” AD/HD has the “H” stand for hyperactivity. If you want more check this out

Relating to the first question again, this is a tough question to answer. The only behavior problem I have had that (possibly) had connections to AD/HD was aggressive behavior. Any form of behavioral changes result from one coping with AD/HD and changing the way they behave as a method of survival. Search “coping mechanisms” on google to find out more.

Outcome? What do you mean? I still have AD/HD if that’s what you mean.

AD/HD and ambidexterity? Not that I know of. If you break both of them down and do a chart-thingy you’ll see that the two have little in comparison. I am born right handed but taught myself to use my left hand in the beginning of the 5th grade. Now (in 10th) my left has become my dominant hand and everything I can do on my right, I can do the same if not better on my left. I don’t know anything about this regarding other people so I’ll just tell you my side of the story. It’s stupid but whatever, I was a kid. I was always an “average” kid, just like everybody else, the simple Joe. My grades weren’t amazing, my athletics weren’t that good, and I didn’t really have a talent for anything at all. All my peers and friends “shined” when it came to standing out and I really wanted a taste of that for once. The lefties in my class were ALWAYS receiving attention. Everybody thought lefties were “cool” and “unique.” So that’s when I started training my left hand. I started getting attention too so I kept at it. And that’s the end.

Autism diagnosed as ADHD?

I’ve been on this long journey to get my 36mo old diagnosed with autism. Getting diagnosed is a long process, as I’m sure all mothers of autistic children know. So far, we’ve been doing therapy, and he’s now in two different therapy and speech programs. We’ve seen a neurologist and the geneticist. Today we had our apt with a children’s psychologist. The psychologist believes that he has ADHD, and not autism! I’m his mother, i know that this isn’t true. The hyperactivity is just a small part of his problems, he also has many feeding issues, sensory issues, self-hurting issues, very limited/poor speech, among many other issues. This psychologist wrote him a prescription for aderall, on a trial basis. I don’t believe that he has ADHD and am therefore hesitant about trying this. He’s already withdrawn enough.
I know that it is sometimes difficult to get autism diagnosed properly. Is it common to have dr’s mistake autism with ADHD, psychologists in particular?

The criteria for ADHD are listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders 4th Edition (DSM-IV) as a set of descriptions for children and adolescents who have significant difficulties with inattention, hyperactive behaviors and impulse control problems in two or more settings (American Psychiatric Association, 1994).

My daughter has ADHD, does anyone know natural ways to cure this?

I have been told there are natural ways to handle ADHD, does anyone know names of these herbs and where I can get some?

First and foremost, nutrition.

Read nutrition/ingredient panels on food product labels very carefully.

Corn syrup is an insidious food additive that is one of the main culprits in ADHD among children. The processed sugars create a mental state of hyperawareness that results in uncontrollable hyperactivity. It is extremely important that corn syrup, and related corn by-products, like corn starch, are completely eliminated from your daughter’s diet.

Be aware: canned and packaged foods, like ketchup, barbecue sauce, gravy, ice cream, wheat bread, frozen lasagna, TV dinners, pot pies, sugary snacks, candy bars, tomato sauce . . . are all corn syrup culprits. Again, look for corn syrup on ingredient labels.

Related to that: look for any kind of added sugars, like what you get in ice creams, candy bars, sauces . . . Look out for sugar!

Next, try to regulate processed flour products. These are white breads, white pastas, and white rice. They are high-glycemic index carbohydrates, which means they are instantly converted to sugar when digested. You need to switch to whole wheat pasta, brown rice, wild rice, or basmati and whole grain bread (do not use wheat bread!)

Then, try to get her involved in something physical: basketball, softball, martial arts, dance, a game of catch, bicycle riding . . . Physical activity is great for reducing the effects of ADHD.

You also need to reduce the amount of time spent watching TV and playing video games. These contribute to ADHD.

I am very wary of using herbal remedies on children. Herbs are no more or less potent than over-the-counter drugs, and can cause serious health effects in children. You must consult with a pediatrician before using herbs.
