I’m an elementary school teacher. In my opinion, medication works WONDERS for SOME children, but it turns others into zombies. For medication to work properly, you, the doctor, and the teachers need to be VERY closely involved and cued into how your son is responding to specific dosages.
If he were my kid, I’d definitely be worried about medication taking away my child’s personality. That’s a totally valid concern. I would also be concerned about whether or not he’s able to concentrate in school and learn. If he’s unable to learn, then medication may be an option to consider.
Does your school have a Response to Intervention program or Student Focus Team? What interventions have been tried with your son? Have these interventions been tracked and measured for efficacy? Examples of interventions: Has he been moved to the front of the room / away from other kids? Have they tried some kind of feedback system so that your son can tell when he’s behaving in a hyperactive way? What about allowing him to stand in the back of the room?
There are a MILLION ways to alter your son’s learning environment that MAY help. In my opinion, ADHD is real, but medication may not be necessary for all kids to succeed in a school environment.
