Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

The main causes of ADHD include: hereditary or genetic factors, altered brain functions and smoking or drug abuse by the mother during pregnancy. The exposure to toxic substances such as lead also has severe effects on the child and results in ADHD. The symptoms of ADHD are:

  • Hyperactivity symptoms such as: frequent jiggles or squirms, excessive talking, restlessness, inability to play or sit quietly, often interrupts when in others’ conversation or in others’ games.
  • Impulsivity or lack of impulse control symptoms such as: uttering inappropriate comments, inability to control immediate reactions or inability to thick before they react and setting oneself in a situation which may be harmful to others around them or themselves.
  • Distractibility or inattentiveness symptoms such as: getting distracted to irrelevant sights and sounds, making careless mistakes, losing or forgetting things, restlessness, inability to pay attention etc.

The ADHD cannot be diagnosed using any single test. It can only be diagnosed using physical examination and checking the symptoms. Certain tests are carried out in order to test medical conditions, neurological conditions and mental disorders.

The ADHD disorder is treated using medications and psychological counseling of the individual. The various medications include stimulants or psycho stimulants, non-stimulants and antidepressants. Stimulants help in reducing lack of impulse control and increases attention and concentration. Antidepressants are used if stimulants do not work on the individual. Counseling, psychotherapy and self-management skills are also a part of the treatment for ADHD.

The use of stimulants does include side-effects, such as: loss of weight, loss of appetite, lack of sleep, headaches and tiredness. ADHD can be prevented by avoiding exposure to toxins and the mother should avoid alcohol consumption smoking and drug abuse during pregnancy.
