Can Mental Disorders be LEARNED? Nature vs Nurture?
I was adopted as a baby. My father has Bipolar and has a narcissistic personality disorder. My birth parents didn’t have any mental disorders.. but my birth father was ADHD.
However, I just learned that I may have BiPolar and my fathers therapist (during a group session) mentioned that he thought my father may have “passed down” his personality disorder on to me. He didn’t know I was adopted, and nobody corrected him.
So.. do you think its possible to LEARN a mental disorder? And I’m not just asking for myself, I’m genuinely curious. Thank you!
Something like bi-polar disorder? In my opinion, no. Bi-polar disorder is an illness that has biological and physiological roots, therefore I don’t think it can be “learned”. However, it IS possible that maybe you don’t really have Bi-polar disorder and are just “mimicking” what you’ve seen your whole life. Children really do become what they see. Even if you recognize that you are doing things your parents did/do, it is not that easy to just stop.
