How do I make friends at my new school?
I’m going to a new school tomorrow and I’m nervous! I never had friends in grades kindergarten - grade 9. (The grade I’m in now!) And I’m really worried. This is going to be a fresh start and I’m worried I’m going to screw it up. I’ve been dealing with depression and ADHD and I have trouble making friends. PLEASE HELP ME! I’m not very social and I’m shy. I’ve been battling self-confidence problems, too, by the way!
Try to talk to at least 5 people every day, plus at least 3 NEW people every day. It doesn’t have to be much, it could just be “hey, what’s up?” or “what was the homework?” or “God, I hate [whatever]” You’d be surprised how much people want to talk to you if you show that YOU want to talk to them
Why don’t you try making some online friends too? It could build your confidence a bit and give you the strength you need to go put yourself out there at school. check out http://www.6rounds.com
As for your self-confidence problems: Try to accept that most people aren’t out to get you. I don’t know you, of course, but you sound like a very normal person. Most people WANT to like other people (if they don’t, it’s because they’re extremely insecure themselves) — it’s extremely unlikely that you are going to say anything so ridiculous or inappropriate that will cause people to immediately start making fun of you. Once you can accept that a little bit, it’s just a matter of practice. You just need to force yourself to speak to people and gradually it will get easier. You wouldn’t be able to sit down at a piano for the first time and just start banging out Beethoven, would you? It’s the same thing with making conversation and making friends.
