Adhd Creative Genius

adhd creative genius

do people with adhd usually have a creative genius to them?

Brain function can be subdivided into two groups, functional and damaged. Damaged brains can be because of birth conditions, such clinical mental retardation, or because of accidents, traumatic brain injury. Functional brains and nervous systems actually come in more than one type.

The “average” functioning brain, with typical neurology, yields average social and academic performance, with an IQ of 100, and no special “gifts” or non-mathematical-linguistic intelligence.

Individuals with high-functioning autism or Asperger’s syndrome are, by definition, endowed with either a superior IQ (well above 100) or with other prodigious gifts. This is because their brains and neurological system is wired to perform singular tasks in narrow areas with great precision. However, they are not well programmed for multiple tasks, such as social skills. These are “rifle thinkers.”

In contrast, individuals with ADD and ADHD have extreme difficulty doing what persons with autism excel at, namely staying focused on a singular task for an extended period. Instead, they are “shotgun thinkers.” They may be very creative and spontaneous and genius in such areas as art. The downside is a tendency to be impetuous.

This is a very simple summary of how these two classes of disorders can contribute to various forms of genius. Each group, and each individual in each group, has their own unique ability to “think outside the (normal) box.” Some would dispute this phenomena by defining genious in more narrow clinical terms.
