College Students with ADHD – Management Strategies
So you have been able to get through high school despite your ADHD symptoms and now it is on to college where life centers around being able to maintain concentration, stay focused, retain knowledge, take concise and legible notes, manage time effectively, and stay organized. This list for academic success can prove quite daunting for most college students with ADHD due to the neurological imbalances occurring in their brains. It is also important to point out that while motivation may be an issue with some, generally speaking, college students with ADHD try as hard or harder than their peers.
Most college student with ADHD are excited about the prospects of entering into a new world of higher education on their way to a success and a noteworthy fulfilling life. Nevertheless, it can be easy to overestimate one’s ability to achieve certain goals, especially when the class load is too ambitious or a college professor isn’t sympathetic to an ADHD students needs. To add to the challenges our favorite ADHD college student may fail to recognize that they will be away from the protective blanket of support provided by parents, families and peers thus becoming overwhelmed by the day to day decisions they will be forced to make on their own.
College Students with ADHD – Getting the most out of college
With each ADHD college student facing a different set of challenges it is difficult to know where to start in providing a pathway for college success, but one thing is for sure without a well thought out plan their chances for success will become less favorable.
When creating a pathway to college success every ADHD college student should include a predetermined idea, or two, as to how they plan to cope with their weaknesses. For instance if they have a problem with starting and/or completing homework assignments make sure they set aside an allotted amount of time every evening just for completing homework assignments. Without setting aside a predetermined amount of time each evening they will tend to place college assignments on the backburner in favor of doing things that they find more interesting. If after settling into a college routine you find that you are still having difficulty setting parameters for yourself don’t hesitate to contact a counselor, a learning service, or other type of academic support offered by the University.
If despite all your preplanning you are still not been able manage your college academics successfully consider hiring an ADHD coach who can help you organize your time and establish good study habits. Another idea is to find others who are facing, or have faced, the same challenges with inattention, impulsivity, and restlessness you are currently facing. A good place to start might be by seeking out an ADHD peer group or peer study group. By joining one of these groups not only will you be able to get valuable input as to better manage your college experience but may also make some new friends and allies in your battle against college ADHD.
What else? Sometimes a college student with ADHD may feel they need a little extra help to face the challenges that a college environment presents. In these instances a natural ADHD remedy just might be the missing piece of the puzzle.
In the end, you should know that many students with attention deficit disorder have not only successfully completed college but have also gone on to achieve great things. Will you be the next?
